Here Posted From "microsoft.public.smartphone"

Dade:
"Thought you guys might like to see the pics I have of Quake 1 running on my SPV. I know its not a binary group but sorry!

The .exe is in a very, very early stage of development, we may not bother to take it any further, but what do you guys think?"

Heres a follow-up post please remeber this has nothing todo with me i am mearly copy and pasting a post that was on "microsoft.public.smartphone"

From: Dade

"Well the source is totally unoptimised for the SPV. To display size hasnt
been set to work properly on the phone. The sample rate for the sound
effects hasnt been sorted yet. There are a lot of technical issues to
resolve, I wont go into them here.

That said we have managed to get about 5 to 8 fps out of it with some basic sound setups. The whole thing is a bit flakey right now, sometimes when you run it you get a high frame rate, others you get about half a frame a
second."

It should definately be taken further! It looks great; i'd port it myself if I knew anything about game programming! Give Nokia owners something to be really jealous about biggrin.gif

Wow, that would be awesome!

I imagine the framerate would increase when the display size is optimised...

5 - 8 fps is pretty good considering it's running an unoptimized (for the SPV) game engine, redering a bigger screen than it needs to and using higher quality sounds than necessary. I reckon it could be amazing with a bit of work (hint hint). Even 15fps should be just about playable. Not sure about the controls though!

I'm forum hopping between here and microsoft.public.smartphone

To add a little more meat to the topic, I borrowed this from DJ XTC's post:

>See orange its this kind of development we wanted and if you continue >with
>destroying the SPV with certification we will NEVER see freeware
>applications like this and quake CANNOT be distributed any other way >since
>the source code is under GNU, and im sorry but that dosnt necessarily >mean
>it isn't a quality application as some might suggest!
>
>DJ XTC
>

As DJ says, Q1 source code was released to GNU by Id Software some time ago. Which basically means it cannot be used commercially.

How will it ever get Orange certification if it cannot be sold? - it has to be freeware. There's no way around that bit, I'm sure Id Software have some serious clout, especially if someone tries to sell their 'free gift to the PC community' through a TelCo...

The only way forward would be for someone to get permission from Id and GNU [I presume] to pay for the certification and develop Q1 for the SPV for FREE.

Could you honestly see Orange, a [greedy is self -obviating with telcos] TelCo, agreeing to someone paying for certification for a killer game to GIVE IT AWAY? On their latest cash-cow?

It may actually be worth a try, but unless app signing is removed [do not hold your breath people...] the

martyr paying for certification and developing Q1 as freeware

route may be the only way you'll ever play it on the SPV.

Its alright rn[max] i liked your comments unfortunately i dont see that orange are going to allow this and i forsee the death of freeware on its mobile network!

I have 2 aliases DJ_Hope here at modaco and DJ_XTC over at MS i just prefer it that way smile.gif

Although DJ_XTC lessens my credability due to its possible drug reference, however i like to think people look past that because frankly id neva touch the stuff.

How about if a stable, good Quake (unsigned) was completed, we could all chip in to get it certified?

That would work?

Yeah Paul, you could ask all your registered users to chip in, lets say 20p, that would be enough wouldn't it? I'll gladly chip in a pound!

Paul i guess thats a possiblity, but would they ever sign something such as an emulator?

It appears that baltimores signing method its much more relaxed because theyll sign apps for you and then if their is malicious code they can revoke the certification and send an update to stop it from running on any other phones (or that was my understanding). Has anyone spoken to baltimore?

I'm sure we could get the app signed. I'd be happy to co-ordinate the effort if required...

Of course, someone has to port it first smile.gif

Baltimore is definitely the way to go...

Their system (as I understand it) is that once your signed up then you get a mechanism on the web that you can put your apps through for immediate signing. The only limitation of the baltimore certificate is that I think it's unprivileged only, so if you wanted to do a network game I'm not sure whether their cert would work.

As the price is 500 pounds for 75 signings, we just need to all donate that amount, any freeware that appears could be tested by the people with open phones, and once it's bug free (enough) sign it and give it to everyone else. By getting it tested unsigned we'd not waste Baltimore signings on buggy code.

I'd happily donate 10 quid toward a program like this...
