We now have 2000 members here, at £10 a pop thats only 50 donations to get the baltimore singing going.

But yes as DJHope says, lets get it running before we think about signing....It will be very cool if it does.

One last thing, don't you need a Ltd company to apply for the baltimore signing scheme?

just an idea  , i would be happy to pay an extra couple of quid a month to orange in return for a free copy of an software thats released, so for £24 a year, anything that orange approve i can get for free, just 1000 spv owners subscribe to this throuh orange and they (orange) will get £2000 a month to invest in software and apps. :?:

i'm not that well up on programing so please excuse me if i'm well off the mark with this and just laugh at me later in the pub!

however if i'm not well off the mark what do you think?, would this work?

Round up of whats good and whats not

Quake SPV
+ For Positive comments
- For negative comments

Status: Far from complete!

+ Quake runs, sound and all
+ We have a limited company we could use to get the application singed if nesicarry.
+ Lots of people have pledged support
+ More stable

- It only runs at 5fps adverage
- Developer cannot get it to run on x86 emulator, this could be due to assembler in source code.
- Developer does NOT have an SPV to test on currently the app is being passed to dade who has an unlocked SPV for testing
- Display is screwed (cut off) as its suposed to be running on PocketPC
- Graphics dont need to be high res (requires pak hacking)
- Sound dosnt need to be so high (requires pak hacking)
- Money is needed for Application signing
- The Developer has not pledged to keep the project running

Application signing is the least of our worries, first off we need to get the developer a method to test the app, eathier by making it work on the emulator OR getting him an SPV, we shall see.

Obviously if we get hold of the 75 signed applications MORE than just quake could be signed and could be the start of a legitimate freeware community.

Thanks for the support

DJ Hope

I'm sure there would be plenty of volunteers for beta testing Quake smile.gif Thats if its development is taken any further. I think if we are gnoig to seriously look into buy the certification other software in devlopment needs to be examined and discussed. No point in wasting certificates

More news on quake very soon, have had some tremedious progress within the last day, waiting for some more news before reporting.

Technically the stance on signing our apps would be

1) Raise the required £400 for application singing
2) Test application until ready to be signed
3) Get limited company to apply for 75 signatures
4) Sign and disribute application freely

Their should be no problem with the GNU license since the application would not be charged for, quake is far to alpha to be considering singing yet. However taking a long term view this is not just for quake, 75 applications could be theortically signed.

Anyone have any ideas on how to collect money, i believe that paypal do a donation service. Maybe we could get baltimore to take the money until we reach the 400 mark were they could give us the package?

Obviously we would need respected members of the smartphone community on board such as paul.

Cheers People.

Paypal don't support enough cards - it would work as long as there was other means to pay, I have a solo card, or I can use bank transfer.

Paul - reckon you could take bank transfers for handling the £400?

By the way, got a limited company if needed.

Yeah, I could manage the donations no problem, I have a seperate bank account for forum related matters.

I'm also happy to co-ordinate the 75 signings. I think that's 75 files tho, so Quake might be an EXE and a CAB, using 2 signings?

This would be a better option than PayPal.

NoChex.co.uk might be ideal tho?

Problem is that they charge senders £1 per transaction from card - that's £50 if all the users donate through it, an eighth of the amount required...

Hi all

first off I'd like to thank DJHope for his enthusiasm for the project.

The reason for the post is just to say that although Dade and I are working on making Quake run on the SPV - it is a LONG way off being a final and stable thing.

It is based off the PocketQuake project which itself acknowledges its own instability - and a lot of the credit for the conversion should go to them, they have already done a lot of work that made the SPV version possible.

So if you want to download code yourselves it is out there.

I HAVE now managed to create a version that runs under the emulator (60fps even - though the actual phone version runs far slower), but for true development testing I do need access to a phone - and using someones daily phone is generally a bad idea in case things go wrong.

I think that the discussion of certificates is far too early for this project, but is a good discussion to have for projects in general. I'd suggest opening up a main discussion topic to that end.

I would ask that everyone give us some time to work on this, it's a long road to making a version that is small enough, stable enough and runs fast enough to even consider certification.

thanks for your patience and support,

muff

Thanks for commenting muff, this does seem to have turned into a generalised chat on getting legitamate freeware out into the market but as you know this is mainly because quake is GNU and serve's as an excelent example.

I also wanted to prove that people DO want freeware on their SPV's although i imagine that is fairly obvious, it does sometimes require evidence.

I really hope you continue the project muff, i have herd that you have made some great advances well done.

I myself am a HUGE fan of ID Software they never fail to amaze me with what exactly they manage to achieve, mainly due to the amazing coding skills of john carmack. I have been playing ID's games since commander keen from way back when.

I hope that you guys will continue to support freeware on the SPV and id like to thank muff for giving me a viable example of what can be achieved if we persevere. Id love to see other freeware apps such as doom and more productive freeware apps such as my tools. Remember to stick up for the little people, bill gates was their one day so it must be us that make the difference.

Take it easy people,

DJ Hope

So I've been thinking this over.

I think porting PocketPC games to the SPV deserves recognition in terms of a seperate website altogether - perhaps a SmartQuake project, or something of the sort as a division of MoDaCo.

It may then be possible to find muff & dade sponsors for such a project, part of the money with which they could purchase phones to continue development.

I know that I, myself, would be happy to donate £10 or so to such a cause.

Just a thought.

Although i find the idea of a community certificate good, and i would gladly make a couple of freeware programs and let the community have them, BUT who will decide what get signed ? there's one certificate left and a game and a tool that needs to get signed, who decides ? do you have to chip in to download the signed apps/games ?

Sorry to be the devils advocate

PS: Paul , if I win the 1000 euros i'll put 100 Euros in the pot

Maybe you could take a vote on the smartphone forum! Obviously their will have to be some trusted beta testers such as the modaco modertors and trusted memebers, unlocked phones would be essential for this.

Also chipping in to download the software *MIGHT* be a problem under GNU. Not entirely sure.

All could be decided in due course smile.gif

GNU or GPL?

Aha, found answer to my own question - the GNU GPL!
