According to today's Register, you'll need to spend £75 a month to get unlimited internet!

QUOTE you'll need to spend £75 a month to get unlimited internet! I read the El Reg article, but I'm not clear... Does that replace the £8/m bolt-on for lower tariff subscriptions?QUOTE the increase in WiFi availability will render the whole debate obsolete by some time in 2007 I doubt it somehow! For WiFi to replace 3G/GPRS they'd have to roll out massive coverage, and things like WiMax may help but I cant see it happening this year. Maybe in the next 2-3 years, but not this year. |

I read the El Reg article, but I'm not clear... Does that replace the £8/m bolt-on for lower tariff subscriptions? I doubt it somehow! For WiFi to replace 3G/GPRS they'd have to roll out massive coverage, and things like WiMax may help but I cant see it happening this year. Maybe in the next 2-3 years, but not this year. If this is true then is Panther to be £75 a month for 900 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data? Don't quite understand what the cross net minutes for 3G phones means though - this lists 450 minutes (or 225 for a 12 month contract), is this extra call time? But why specify 3G phones. You also get free insurance for the duration of the contract on this tariff (this is also available on the £55 tariff). On TMob relax 50 you get 750 minutes and 200 texts (500 extra if ordering over the web). Adding web and walk adds £7.50 and adding insurance adds another £8 IIRC. So for £65.50 you get less minutes, less texts and equivalent data and insurance. On a 12 month contract, if this is true, then Orange look competitive. Taking an 18 month FlexT contract if we take FlexT 50 you can get 1125 minutes and 300 texts, then adding W&W and insurance again comes to £65.50. Depending on the meaning of the 'cross net minutes - 450 for 3G phones' from Orange could mean TMob is the best value or possibly Orange Panther. I think the 3G minutes are for video calls, not sure though.
But for me, using under 200min and 150txt but LOADS of data, it's a poor deal. The advantage of WnW is that you can add it to any bundle (or even PAYG), so I don't have to pay for "allowance" that I'll never use. |

3G minutes are extra minutes given if you connect a 3G phone to Orange Seems odd - is that because you have paid more for the handset or because they intend to shaft you for data charges at some point, I wonder? If this includes unlimited texting and data it definitely stacks up against the FlexT tariffs. Just noticed that on The Register this is meant to apply only to 18 month contracts unfortunately. Just found this on a previous Register article, "The 'Panther' package - "For people who like all the extras". Not in a massage parlour way, one presumes. ***Comes with inclusive 3G minutes***. They would give the most expensive package the coolest name." Which makes it sound like it is for video calling. In which case Orange just became uncompetitive again! They really could do with being a bit more clear on the website. This post has been edited by Dr Who: Jul 31 2006, 15:27 |

I don't use much of my current 'allowance' (120 x-net mins + 250 text for £25/month) so I couldn't live with having to have a giant monthly package just to get unlimited data. T's idea of a simple bolt-on is much more up my street.Come on Orange - sort it out -------------------- |

T's idea of a simple bolt-on is much more up my street. Come on Orange - sort it out One guy here said earlier that not many Orange customers would leave for the competition from now on. If that bundle (mentioned in The Register article, only avail on £75 a month) is all what Orange is willing to do to stop us from defecting to TMobile, then we should all apply for the job of Customer Retention Manager... On TMobile I've paying less than £30 a month for 200' + unlimited data allowance (subject to fair use). Why on earth would I want to pay £75 a month on an 18 month contract on Orange for lots of stuff I am not interested in using? It does kinda look like they're trying to play catchup but just can't get the numbers to work in their budgeting system/get it signed-off!
I really would be interested to know what percentage/numbers of people they've got on their retention system as leaving to go to T-Mobile for the unlimited data.... bet it's quite scary. |

I really don't understand where the operators are coming from on data charges. I'm on O2 with no extra bundles and I think they charge me £4 / MB - that's extortion. I have a Mini S (Wizard) and I never use GPRS.
I have a mate with the same phone (Vario) on WnW and he's on it constantly. He was on Voda b4 and he said WnW is the best thing that's happened to him (phone-wise of course). I went in to Voda to ask about the TyTN (darn tmobile has not brought it out Vario II yet). I asked them about their data prices and they told me that their data bundles are to be DISCONTINUED in Sept and they have no unlimited data option. So to summarise: 02 - rip off Voda - rip off Orange - spend £75 for unlimited data - trying, but still rip off Tmobile - £7.50 on any tariff, I like it! Take note Mr O2 - as soon as Vario II comes out, I'm off to Tmobile. This post has been edited by pete.major: Jul 31 2006, 20:32 -------------------- ---------------------

My average bill has finally dropped to between £60-£70 a month.
Typical, I finally get my spending under control, but now I'll just miss the cut, of course if it's only business customers then I'll miss out what ever my monthly spend is Didn't realise WnW is available on PAYG. I've got an M5000 which is too bulky to use as an everyday phone, I might switch that to T-Mobile and dig my old C600 out to keep on my current Orange deal (as I'm actually pretty happy with the Big 'O) Having said that, the main thing I want it for is IM so I might be buggered whatever I do... Guess have to wait till end of August to read the small print and compare the actual costs of Panther / £8 bundle / WnW This post has been edited by tmorel: Aug 1 2006, 07:42 |

So far the CS drones have said, a) Its not available c) Its available from 22nd August d) You can get it for £75 a month Until someone can link me to a page on the O website or a CS drone say, "Yes I know all about this and can apply it to your contract now" it would seem only TMob offer this service. |

I went in to Voda to ask about the TyTN (darn tmobile has not brought it out Vario II yet). I asked them about their data prices and they told me that their data bundles are to be DISCONTINUED in Sept and they have no unlimited data option. I talked to Vodafone CS the other day - and they said the instead of data bundles, what they have is something like Flext - except that instead of everything being swappable, you can only swap your texts allowance for other data services. She said that if a tariff gave me (say) 500 texts, I could use that for 500 texts (obviously), 25MB (at 20 texts per meg) or 166 MMS (3 each) or any combination of the above. This sounds very reasonable - but i've been unable to confirm it with anyone in a shop. If true it would be great value - shame they haven't got any HTC phones to go with the tariff... and re the Orange £8 - you can only get it on Orange Premier or Panther Tariffs - as it says in the T&C - http://www1.orange.co.uk/ow1/ as posted originally This post has been edited by WILBUR: Aug 1 2006, 10:23 |

This might not matter much, but both T-Mobile's network and CS is not as good as Orange.
I was on the mighty O until June, when I switched over. Yes, my bills were cut in half, and I'm enjoying unlimited GPRS, but with no WM5 (no push emails then) on the SDA and an avarage wait time of 20min to get thru to CS, it's not all smiles. Not to mention the remarkable number of times I simply don't get texts until I make a call on the network. T is cheaper, but you understand why after a while. I left Orange for TMobile a year ago and I've not had any single reason to complain. Bills cut by half but also much better support through the my account section of T's website -why do you need to call CS when you can manage your accout, add bundles and stuff on line? T's automated support is much better than Orange's, and I have not had to call CS once since er. last year..! Plus unlimited data offering + good handsets, etc. Those who argue in favour of Orange CS never back up their claims..! -------------------- Device history: Orange MPx 220 / Orange SE Z1010 / O2 XdaIIs / T-Mobile MDA Vario W'n'W / Orange MoDaCo SPV C600 / TMobile Vario II on Flext 25 + Web'n'Walk

I just spoke to Orange and the CS guy finally managed to find the bundle that everyone is talking about (it was only realeased today) but...
1. It is only for 3G customers. 2. You can only have it if you have a Panther or Premier subscription. 3. You might only be able to have it if Orange marketing ring you up and offer it to you (and you meet the other two criteria). All in all a bit pants really! I asked if there were any other GPRS bundles available and he replied that none of the existing GPRS packages had been updated and there were no no ones. I really hope someone else has more luck... Out of interest, can you use a 3G sim card in a Prophet? Do Orange charge to upgrade your account to 3G? I assume I can become a 3G customer without having a 3G phone... |

Must admit, like Nforsans, I've got no complaints with T-Mobiles performance compared to Orange. Having taken a T-Mobile contract about 2 years ago and continuing to have an Orange contract as well, I have found T-Mobile to be no worse then Orange in any way what so ever. In fact, I'd have to say that my experience of their customer service and web site is far better then my experience with Orange. Also I find that signal wise T-Mobile often out do Orange although it does depend on where in the country you are. Now the SDA II (which presumably you have Dearsina?) is something I can understand complaints about given I had the SPV C550 version of the HTC Hurricane (same platform) and had problems with it on both Orange and T-Mobile despite trying both providers roms as well... |
