They're the two hottest devices at the moment... the HTC Diamond and the Samsung i900... and the chaps over at GSMArena have managed to get their hands on one of each and put them head to head!

As they say...

"It's PocketPC playoffs and HTC are giving Samsung a match at the GSM Arena. With two of the stars of the season arriving in our office all at once, we thought it's a heck of an opportunity for some Diamond-Omnia-Diamond-Omnia-Diamond-Omnia game-set-match with a pinch of iPhone flavor. We got two aces up to the challenge, so sit back and stretch out. Ah well, get that six-pack too and join us for the kick-off. ".

Heck, it's Friday, bring on the beer biggrin.gif

The article is well worth a read and is exceptionally thorough, running to 9 pages! I'm gonna post the conclusion here, because reading it doesn't negate the value of reading the full article.

QUOTE
Well, it's the final whistle in our head-to-head. Tempted as we are to not leave it a tie and send it to a penalty shootout, we just have to pay due respect to both contenders. After all it's not the score that makes the game exciting. Sometimes a draw can be as interesting to watch, and this one here sure ain't goalless.

Anyway, it's nearly impossible to give a conclusive judgment as to which of these two fine PocketPCs deserves your money better. The Samsung i900 Omnia and the HTC Touch Diamond are both excellent choices with their own set of advantages and shortcomings. The good thing is they hardly overlap, so getting your priorities right is all you need to make the right choice.

You can certainly get the short version of their virtues at the beginning of this review, we won't be repeating all of those here.

The main point to make here is that there isn't a perfect device that's got it all for all consumer groups even in this high-end segment. Instead, when you go after one of these extra sweet devices you should carefully weigh your priorities and pick the one that covers most of them.

iPhone 3G is still to see a reality check, but it's almost sure that these two can give the latest Apple device a good fight. Maybe they still can't challenge the iPhone interface, but they are finally getting closer.

With HTC Touch Diamond and Samsung i900 Omnia, Windows Mobile handsets no longer seem chubby and nerdy. The next generation of PocketPCs match style with the best performance in their class.

Thought this head to head was going to make your choice easier? Perhaps not! biggrin.gif

It could be just a vicious rumour, but our spies in the field are reporting that the country is about to be invaded by subtly-Orange branded HTC Diamonds and T-Mobile MDA Compact IV's this coming weekend!

Be vigilant people, and please do report any sightings here in this topic as quickly as possible.

This one's for all our North American friends out there who are waiting for the Touch Diamond with CDMA biggrin.gif

When the Touch Diamond was released it was an instant hit, and at the time HTC said they would be releasing a CDMA version later in the year. Well now the first carrier to announce they will be carrying the device is Telus who have got an interactive page on there website dedicated to the device smile.gif

The device itself has changed a little from the original Diamond, although still branded the HTC diamond it shares a striking resemblance to the MDA Compact IV in the design, layout and having the flatter back cover but still carrying the same specs we love from the Diamond.

Telus is planning to release the device at $149.99 on a 3 year contract! As well as also offering bundles for unlimited email, IM and web access.

I wonder who the next carrier to announce the Diamond will be and which design they will carry?

You can find more information on the Telus website here: Telus device: Diamond

Which design of Diamond do you prefer? Would the design change make you more or less likely to buy? Would you sign up for a 3 year contract? Share your thoughts with us

Toshiba and SPB have teamed up to make a new front end to the recently launched Portege G810.

Working together, their goal it seems is to improve upon the windows mobile interface, much in the same way as HTC has tried to with the Touchflo and now TouchFlo 3D interface.

In the following quote from the announcement, it would suggest that rather than go the way of Apple and totally designing their intuitive interface for their iPhone, at this present time Microsoft are leaving it up to the OEM's and their partners to come up with their own alternatives.

From the SPB website:

QUOTE(Fabio Falzea acting as Mobile Communications Business Lead Microsoft Central & Eastern Europe Area)
Microsoft is committed to support a vibrant partner ecosystem and always delivers opportunities to create solutions that meet a wide range of Windows Mobile customers needs.

The Toshiba - Spb synergy is one good example of the rich benefits the Microsoft ecosystem secures to the market, where partners are able to complement each others strengths and deliver new innovative and rich experiences on Windows Mobile platform.

Its an interesting strategy, considering the shift recently in Smartphone OS's. Nokia buying out Symbian, and then releasing it for free, and then the upcoming release of Android from Google, compared with the pay for Windows Mobile OS which OEM's pay for and of course the wholey owned apple iPhone OS. I wonder in the future how they will feel about having to pay for a product that lacks in features compared to that of its opposition, especially if it is free?!

However, here are some screen shots from SPB of the plain WM6.1 screens compared to the partnership skins created:

I think they are quite nice, but personally I'm not sure it compares with what HTC have done.

How do you think this compare to TouchFlo and TouchFlo 3D, or indeed is the iPhone style interface what you are craving for? Let us know your thoughts.

From Astraware:

QUOTE(Astraware)
Astraware Fireworks is a simple FREE application, showing sequences of fireworks flying and exploding into the air. Dashwire, which we covered prelaunch and at public beta, has now hit version 2.0!

A quick recap for the uninitiated... In their own words...

QUOTE
What is Dashwire?

Dashwire automatically mirrors the content on your phone to the web, helping you access, manage, and share your mobile experiences

How does it work?

Once you sign-up for your FREE account, you’ll be prompted to install a small application on your phone that will keep your phone constantly connected and in-sync with your private, web-based Dashwire account.

What you do on the phone will instantly update on the web, what you do on the web will update your on phone.

No cables or effort required. Easy.

What does Dashwire bring to the web?
  • Contacts
  • Text Messages (SMS)
  • Photos
  • Videos
  • Call logs
  • Voicemail
  • Phone settings - Ringtones, Web Bookmarks, Speed Dials
You control which items sync and when it happens. Dashwire connects across wireless data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB.

So what's new in version 2?

Again, in their own words...

QUOTE
Up to this point, Dashwire has primarily focused on helping users effortlessly bring their mobile phone and content it captures up to the web. But that is only part of the experience we want to provide for users, and today we’re excited to be releasing a new version of our mobile software to help people more seamlessly integrate their mobile and web worlds. Below is a look at some of the new experiences:

Mobile access to photos & videos stored online in your Dashwire account. What’s cool about this is we allow you to view photos even if the actual media files aren’t on your phone. We sync and optimize cache to bring in a set of your photos stored in the cloud on the Dashwire service and make it super fast to browse through, edit and share. This feature allows us to introduce new things like the ability to upload photos from your computer and have them instantly show up on your phone (we’re almost ready to launch photo uploads from your computer - stay tuned).

Media editing, blogging and sharing with friends –on the go. You can now add a title/description and share your photos with your friends, or post to your Dashwire shared page from your phone. Sharing media is accessible from the menu option, and allows you to pick from your contact list. Your friends will receive an email with link to view the photo so you don’t have to worry about sending a full size image over the carrier network every time you want to share a photo.

Direct mobile status updates to Facebook & Twitter. Status updates is something we’ve enabled from Dashwire.com, but it’s most useful to people when they are out and about. From the new mobile client, it’s easy to add your status and have it automatically update to Facebook, Twitter or both.

Privacy controls & media publishing - we added a privacy mode setting based on user feedback which is pretty cool. Now everyone who wants their Dashwire shared page to be open for friends and the public to view, can keep it published without worrying about new photos they capture automatically going live. From within each photo you can set it to private or public.

Dashwire is very cool and well worth a look if you haven't played already, but best of all, it's FREE! To get started, just head on over to http://www.DashWire.com, or hit up http://m.dashwire.com from your mobile phone browser.

You can also Check out a video demo of Dashwire Mobile 2.0, and read more at the Dashwire blog.

T-Mobile will on Tuesday turn on its fast uplink mobile broadband service, claiming it is the first UK operator to do so on a nationwide basis.

High-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA), also known as 'super-3G', is already commonly rolled out across the UK, but its counterpart — high-speed uplink packet access (HSUPA) — has only recently been appearing, and on a limited basis. HSUPA will be crucial for those who want to upload content to the web from their phones or laptops, rather than simply downloading it.

T-Mobile UK chief executive Jim Hyde said on Monday that the operator was addressing "the growing passion for sharing photos and videos on social-networking sites". T-Mobile has also upgraded its HSDPA speed to a theoretical maximum of 7.2Mbps, or up to 4.5Mbps in the real world. The HSUPA link promises uplink speeds of up to 1.4Mbps.

[Edit by Paul (MVP) for News]

As far as I know, the Diamond is currently the only device to support HSUPA... however it will be interesting to hear who is the first on the site to report HSUPA upload speeds! Come over and discuss the news on Mobiholics!

Leaky leaky... courtesy of Engadget, feast your eyes on some juicy deets re: the forthcoming Palm Treo 800w!

The devices seems to feature WinMo 6.1 (of course) - with Palm's usual customisations - including a prettier threaded SMS app, a 333 MHz processor, a 320x320 square screen, a 2 MegaPixel (yawn) camera, WiFi and GPS. It looks a BIT more 'modern' than the ancient staple Palm handset design but, well, it's not exactly earth shattering IMHO.

Fellow members... is this device on your radar?

One of my must-have utilities that is on all my devices, FDCSoft Task Manager, has been updated to version 3.1.

To call it a Task Manager is really selling it short, as it is a veritable feast of useful functions, including:
  • Process manager
  • CPU usage
  • Application Manager
  • Service Manager
  • Device Manager (only WM2005 and above)
  • Windows Manager
  • Notification Manager
  • IP Config utility
  • Ping utility
  • Net Stats utility
  • Registry Editor
  • Run program utility
The best part? It's completely FREE! biggrin.gif

You can download the application from 'DotFred's Space', however due to an oddity in the CAB I was unable to install on a WM6 Pocket PC (HTC Diamond). If you experience the same problem, I have uploaded a fixed version below.

Enjoy biggrin.gif

If you are lucky enough to have a HTC Touch Diamond or a HTC X7510 (the new advantage), then chances are you've already been lucky enough to play with the new-generation Opera browser, which finally brings truly usable desktop-style browsing to Windows Mobile.

If you are using another handset though, you'll be pleased to learn that the non device specific version of Opera Mobile 9.5 enter public Beta on July 15th!

Featuring some special featuers over and above what is included in the OEM versions (Google Gears, Opera Widgets and I wouldn't be surprised to see Opera Link in there too), the application will be available for all Windows Mobile Professional (Pocket PC) devices. Sadly, unlike previous versions, there is as yet NO mention of a Standard (Smartphone) version!

We'll be bringing you the download link as soon as it is available... so watch this space! smile.gif You can also read more over on the Opera Mobile blog, a snippet from which follows!

QUOTE(Opera)
We have some exciting news to share today. It's almost time to release Opera Mobile 9.5 for Windows Mobile to the world. We thank you for your patience and support as we make what we (and many others) believe is the best browser for mobile phones. A release testing phase is underway now and the target date for the first beta is July 15th. You will be able to download it from opera.com just like you would any other versions of Opera.

Opera Mobile 9.5 will be based on the same browser engine as Opera 9.5 for desktop, and this is the reason why it has taken some time to get it ready. A new version of the browser engine will ensure that you can surf the Web with a browser supporting the latest and greatest in Web standards.

Some versions of Opera Mobile 9.5 are already shipping on great phones like the HTC Touch Diamond, and some of you have asked why we wouldn't be able to release it publically yet. As you probably know, releasing a version that works on a large variety of phones is more complex than making it work on one specific phone. You should also expect a few differences between the versions that are pre-installed on phones and the public version of Opera Mobile 9.5.

We'll have more details about the product in the near future. Thanks again, and we hope you're ready for some beta testing with us.

Exactly what it says in the title... Vodafone UK have made the 6.1 firmware available via their website for the v1615 (aka the HTC Kaiser).

You can grab the update from this page (instructions included in the download), and read more about it on the Vodafone forums here.

Let us know how you get on with the upgrade too smile.gif
