You get a call from a number that's not saved in your contacts and you look @ the screen and wonder, now who could that be? Well according to Privus Mobile gone are those days. With their new Mobile Caller ID application it can display the registered name and number of the calling party, even if they aren't stored locally on your phone contacts. Windows Mobile ( both Professional and Standard ) and Blackberry can run this application and a port to Symbian is on its way. Full-service functionality requires simultaneous voice and data communications to be supported by both the phone and the carrier.
QUOTE("Pocketnow.com) Because the service scans its network to search and retrieve the caller name and number, WiFi and 3G will enable both simultaneous voice and data connection to allow the data to be transmitted back. With EDGE, you can still get that data, but it will be available after the call or after the call gets sent to voicemail should you decide not to pickup, providing less utility but still good to know who called without needing to check voicemail or sit and guess.
The service is currently available in North America and will expand to European Union countries by the end of the year. A 3-month subscription will cost about $25 while a year-long subscription goes for $90. The rates are high, but the service will be useful to the mobile professional.

If you own a HTC device, chances are you've tried to download an updated ROM at some point, and had to jump through a bunch of hoops to do so. Hoop-jump no longer!
Effective immediately, HTC device owners can now download ROMs from their regional HTC site without needing to register their device and sign in, a very welcome improvement - well done HTC!

What are the chances that the most hyped User Interface released by HTC utilises open source code for many functions? Well according to Johan Sanneblad, If you go to “Settings” and scroll down to “About” you will see a list of copyright notices from the various technologies used!
Over at his blog he has posted the product names, and also added brief descriptions about the products used.
QUOTE - Boost. “Free peer-reviewed portable C++ source libraries.”
*Open source* - FreeImage. “An Open Source library project for developers who would like to support popular graphics image formats like PNG, BMP, JPEG, TIFF and others as needed by today’s multimedia applications.”
*Open source* - Lua. “Lua is a powerful, fast, light-weight, embeddable scripting language.”
*Open source* - Luabind. “Luabind is a library that helps you create bindings between C++ and Lua. It has the ability to expose functions and classes, written in C++, to Lua.”
*Open source* - Vincent 3D Rendering Library. “This project maintains a compliant implementation of the OpenGL ES 1.1 API specification for mobile devices.”
*Open source* - STLport. “STLport is implementation of C++ Standard Library”
*Open source* - RapidXml. “RapidXml is an attempt to create the fastest XML parser possible, while retaining useability, portability and reasonable W3C compatibility.”
*Open source* - SWIG. “SWIG is a software development tool that connects programs written in C and C++ with a variety of high-level programming languages (such as Lua).”
*Open source* - BString. “The Better String Library is an abstraction of a string data type which is superior to the C library char buffer string type, or C++’s std::string.”

The first ROM update for the Omnia has been released by Samsung Singapore... to grab a copy head over to Samsung's website. This is rumoured to be a self-service ROM update which means you wont be needing to take the device to the service center!
Other than the normal bug fixes this update should include additional functionality like new widgets for the Today Screen and a brand-new Hanyu Pinyin text input method for typing in Chinese characters.

Mugen Power, kings of high quality replacement batteries for mobile devices, have announced the release of two extended batteries for the HTC Shift!
Regular readers will know that while I applauded the Shift in general, the killer blow for me was the appalling battery life. It now looks as though a solution of sorts is here
Two different batteries are available to order now from the Mugen Power site (with stock arriving shortly), specifically the 4400mAh HLI-X9500ML @ $169.95 and the 6600mAh HLI-X9500XL @ $239.95. The standard Shift battery is 2700mAh.
Although not cheap, the batteries are certainly capacious, and despite the inevitable added bulk, are likely to answer the prayers of many a Shift owner.
All we need now is a ROM refresh from HTC to fix those little issues that prevent the machine being the great device it could be... HTC? HTC?

Gears over at Coolsmartphone.com has posted that Vodafone have listed the Touch Pro as "Coming Soon" on the website.
For now this is only in the business section, however it is the first of the major networks to list this device.
Its all getting very exciting now, as I for one cannot wait for this device to come out. Stay tuned for more news on this device as soon as we get it!
Cheers

Regular readers will know that i'm somewhat smitten by the HTC Diamond as my main handset atm, however I am the first to admit that it's not the ideal device for all, and if you are a real heavy user or really need a hardware keyboard, it just doesn't cut it. Introducing the iPaq 914c.
The iPaq 914c packs some very impressive specs in a body that isn't huge, all things considered (especially the battery)!
Specs are as follows:- Windows Mobile® 6.1 Professional
- Marvell PXA270 520 MHz Processor
- Quad-band GSM/SPGRS/EDGE phone and Tri band UMTS, HSDPA 3.6/7.2 Mpbs
- 256MB ROM / 128MB RAM
- 2.46" transmissive TFT, 65K colours, 320 x 240 pixel touch panel display with LED backlight
- Wireless LAN 802.11b/g
- Bluetooth® 2.0 with EDR
- GPS receiver Integrated GPS navigation (Assisted GPS)
- 64-bit MicroSD card slot
- Camera Integrated 3.0 mega-pixel auto focus camera
- Removable/rechargeable 1840 mAh Lithium-Ion (user changeable)
- Dimensions (w x d x h) 6.4 x 1.6 x 11.3 cm
- Weight 146 g
Yes, that really does say a 1840mAh battery (compared to the Diamond's 900mAh!). It's a monster
I've been using the device for over a week now, so i'm here to take your questions. Fire away! The 914c retails for an extremely reasonable £349.99 from eXpansys (don't forget our £10 off vouchers, now extended until the 18th August!)

We do like to grumble about how there's not enough Windows Mobile advertising, so we should also applaud this HUGE Diamond advert on the IMAX Cinema!
There certainly does seem to be a Diamond promo push atm, I (Paul) have also seen a ton of advertising for the Diamond and TouchFlo 3D on the new advertising screens on the tube network in London.
Nice work HTC

PS maclondon: Kudos for getting the pic

TouchXperience is a new User Interface that will be launched for the Windows Mobile Pocket PC. The interface looks neat and simple, but there are some really wonderful features exploiting the accelerometer from the Touch Diamond.
It is being developed by Schaps from xda-developers.com. It's not clear if this interface will be coming out as a ROM upgrade ( which might require Flashing of your device ) or if there will be an installable version of the application that will be released. I am inclined to believe the former because of this statement on the new website
QUOTE Coming soon on HTC Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, TyTN & TyTN II
Those are the platforms for which he normally cooks ROMS. There is a lot more information on his site with videos and screen grabs about this new interface. He promises the interface will be highly customisable and events can also be customised. eg : In the video the notes application launches when he pulls the stylus out.
The in post video shows off the features of the accelerometer from the Diamond, check the videos and images on the official site for a better look @ the interface

What? Someone is still making Smartphones? Thanks goodness for that!
Leak-meister-deluxe BoyGenius is spilling the means on a new Motorola Device - the 'Alexander' (pictured here), which is said to feature...
- Windows Mobile 6.1 (with some sort of custom homescreen it seems)
- 5-8 megapixel camera
- NVIDIA 3D graphics chip
- aGPS
...due for release in Q4.
Thoughts?

Wow!
PCWorld.com is reporting that HTC is set to ship it's one millionth Touch Diamond in August, which is great news, particularly as HTC say Touch Diamond sales are outpacing the sales of the wildly popular original Touch. The figures also put HTC well on schedule to hit their target of 2 million sales by the end of the year.
The Touch Diamond has been launched by over 50 operators in 30 countries around the world.
PC World is also reporting that on Monday, HTC announced a deal with Taiwan Mobile to offer the Touch Diamond for free to people who sign a 3G contract. The cost of the handset is recouped over time through the contract, as is the case with the iPhone 3G - HTC had originally planned to launch the Touch Diamond for NT$23,900 (US$781) in Taiwan.
Together with the Touch Pro launch and the as yet announced 'Touch Dual' style Diamond - not to mention HTC OEM'ing the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 and the rumoured HTC Dream - it looks set to be a great 2008 for HTC!
*goes off to buy some HTC shares*

Koushik Dutta, my new hero for his incredibly effective unravelling of the Diamond specific APIs for managed developers has announced another new Diamond enhanced project named 'OmniPresence'.
Written in .net CF 3.5, OmniPresence is a remote control client (and accompanying server) with some very nice implementation details. Taken from the first preview post, features include:- Double tap to zoom in and out
- Use the HTC Diamond Nav Wheel to smoothly zoom in and out
- Drag your finger along the screen to pan.
- Click and hold to send a right click to the remote machine.
- You can enter full screen via the menu. You can leave full screen by pressing the center rocker/nav key.
- Screen rotation sensor support via GSen (I removed it from my app, why do it when someone else does it better?)
The recently released Beta 1 adds the following goodies...- Panning and Zooming do not suspend screen refreshes.
- Panning the screen does not tax your bandwidth as much. Tuned the compression algorithms to handle it intelligently.
- Fixed a bug that cause the the screen to "jump" if you panned or zoomed repeatedly.
- Implemented right click. Click and hold to send a right click.
- Gave click events tactile feedback: they now vibrate your phone for a split second. This feature can be enabled and disabled in the menu.
- Implemented several compression techniques. The "best" one is used every frame. Still investigating further tuning of loss-less compression.
Finally, as the application develops, the following features are planned...- One of the unmentioned features is that Omnipresence can support multiple clients/viewers at the same time. I need to add a status panel that shows all the current clients on the server.
- Password based authentication.
- "Observer" mode. Someone who connects with the specified observer password can only view the session, and not interact.
- The ability to toggle how double clicks are handled: send to server or client zoom. Right now double clicks are never sent to the server, and that is annoying!
- Improve on the tactile feedback, by supporting more types.
o Audio Notification (a customizable beep) o Visual Cue (a cross hair that appears where you clicked) - Have the client retrieve "larger" than screen dimension images to support faster panning when bandwidth is not an issue.
- Implement client pacing: the client should intelligently pace its frame requests so it is never waiting for a frame. It should always be either decoding or receiving a frame.
It's pretty cool already, but it definitely has great potential. I'd love to see support for a standard server protocol like VNC going forward, which would also facilitate non Windows servers (e.g. mac!)
Head on over to Koushik's blog to read more, or download the latest beta here. Koushik has also added AppToDate support in his other applications, so i'm hopeful we'll see OmniPresence auto-updating soon too. Hurrah

If you are fortunate to own an O2 Germany XDA Touch Diamond, then you'll have noticed that the base TomTom Navigator 7 application is installed by default together with a free city map! If you are using another Touch Diamond device then you'll have noticed TomTom is NOT installed by default, although it does seem to be floating around in unofficial CAB form in various places.
In line with the applications availability, the appropriate maps for the device are now available, namely Eastern Europe or Western Europe in 7.20 guise. Not only that, they are a bargain!
Available to buy from this page, you can pick up the Eastern Europe map for £29.95 and the Western Europe map for £49.95 for installation via TomTom Home, a very nice deal indeed, and certainly a lot cheaper than buying a dedicated PNA!
Fingers crossed for an official application installer for other Diamonds from TomTom I think...
