Now i'm not sure if this is new or not (if not, i've only just found out!), but Colorware, the custom colour people, now offer custom painting of the Samsung Blackjack II!

As you can see in the image below, you can choose from a number of different solid or metallic colours for your device front, side, back / top or back / bottom. You'll need to send in your device (US only) and it isn't cheap, but it DOES look pretty damn cool! biggrin.gif

Out of interest, if anyone has previously owned a colorware device and can comment on the quality of the finish, let us know!

If you want to spec up your own custom paint scheme, visit the colorware site, and feel free to share your creation...

Edit: March 2008 apparently! Hey ho... wink.gif

If you are a Mac and a WinMo user, then there are two solutions out there for all your syncing needs - 'Missing Sync' or 'Syncmate' (available in either free or paid versions).

I've personally bought both, but I must confess that it's the newcomer Syncmate that is currently installed on my machine rather than the established Missing Sync.

For today only, the MUPromo arm of top Mac site MacUpdate is offering Syncmate Expert - the paid version of Syncmate - at a 50% discounted price of $19.95... quite a bargain! The expert version adds the following features...
  • Bookmark synchronization
  • Folders synchronization
  • iPhoto synchronization
  • iTunes synchronization
  • Notes synchronization
  • Time synchronization
  • Mail plugin
  • SMS manager plugin
  • Applications list plugin
  • To Do's plugin
...some additions well worth having.

You can find out more about Syncmate (and also grab the free version) over at the Eltima site, or get in quick for your 50% discount over at MUPromo [aff].

Yesterday I spent some time in London at the T-Mobile Winter Showcase. This is basically where T-Mo pimp their wares for the coming season... and this time they had the chance to show off a couple of devices of interest to readers here, namely the MDA Vario IV and the Android based G1.

I've included a video of the G1 in action (excuse the fact i'm a complete android n00b), as well as some MDA Vario IV pics below.

If you have any questions on either, hit me up in this topic! Really liking the MDA IV, bit slicker in appearance than the Touch Pro... really not overly enamoured with the uber-plasticky (especially in Black!) G1.

Discuss! biggrin.gif

P

PS Apologies for the lighting in the video and pictures, the venue lighting was AWFUL! And very pink... tongue.gif

PPS News page readers - photos after the jump!

PPPS That's not a Pink G1... it's the white one in the dodgy lighting! biggrin.gif

Microsoft Phone Data Manager Beta is out and it should run on any Windows Mobile phone (or other SyncML/OBEX standard compliant handset) and offers to backup select data. Its not a complete Backup solution, but does offer some benefits. Contacts are saved on to Windows Live, while media files are stored in a folder on your Windows XP or Vista PC. In order for you to synchronize contacts, you will need to have a Windows Live ID (any Hotmail ID is a valid Windows Live ID). If you do not have one, you will be prompted to create one while you use the application.

Microsoft Phone Data Manager Beta is an application that is designed to take away the worry of losing data on your phone - specifically contacts, music, pictures and videos. It does that by synchronizing your phone contacts with Microsoft's Windows Live Contacts store in the cloud, or by helping you download files from the phone to your local computer.

Contacts: Microsoft Phone Data Manager Beta synchronizes the contacts present in your phone with your contact store on Windows Live Contacts, which is the same store that your Hotmail contacts uses. This way, your phone contacts are always present on the internet, accessible via the contacts link on Hotmail. If you lose, or simply change your phone, all you need to do is to synchronize the contacts using Microsoft Phone Data Manager Beta, and all the contacts that you stored in your Windows Live Contacts store will be downloaded to your phone. You can synchronize your contacts as many times as you like so that the changes you make (edits, additions or deletions) on your phone, or on the computer on Windows Live Contacts are always reflected on both your phone and the Windows Live Contacts store.

Music, Pictures and Video: In its current form, Microsoft Phone Data Manager Beta will download the music, pictures and videos present in your phone to a local folder on the computer you are using this application on

Communication with your phone: Microsoft Phone Data Manager Beta can communicate with your phone via a wireless standard known as Bluetooth, or via a USB cable.

If I told you a few years ago that you would be running a version of Photoshop on your Windows Mobile device, you would have called me a lunatic. But, with the launch today of Photoshop for a subset of Windows Mobile devices, that is exactly what's happened (and maybe I am a little bit of a lunatic) wink.gif

OK, so the name is a little misleading... you're not going to be loading your PSDs onto your phone and doing serious image editing... what Photoshop Mobile offers is...

QUOTE(Adobe)
"the easiest way to upload, view, and share your photos online from your phone:

- Upload and store photos online as soon as you take them (get 2GB of storage free)
- View your online photos and albums from your phone
- Share them wherever you are

All you need is a support Windows Mobile phone and a Photoshop.com membership. To download the beta, follow the steps in the blue box above or type m.photoshop.com on your phone's browser.

Still pretty cool, especially for free!

Supported devices at this time are the Blackjack, Blackjack II, Motorola Q9C, Motorola Q9H and the Treo 750 (without touchscreen features)... which leads me to think all you Smartphone users should be OK. Unfortunately the distinct lack of buttons on my Omnia means this isn't going to work for me wink.gif Hence, i'm relying on you lot to tell me how good it is (or not)! biggrin.gif

To sign up or see a video demo of Photoshop Mobile in action, head on over to Photoshop.com.

If you are a Garmin Mobile XT user, you'll be very pleased to hear that Garmin have released an update from version 4 to 5 of the application, with significant enhancements, FREE! biggrin.gif

The release, which is available here in the Garmin support site, offers the following benefits over version 4...
  • Update the look and feel of the Garmin Mobile XT application.
  • Add new Garmin Online feature - Google Local Search.
  • Add new Garmin Online feature - Panaramio photos.
  • Add new Garmin Online feature - Flight Status.
  • Add Speed Limit display to the View Map.
  • Add ability to install and display custom vehicle icons.
  • Modify 'Peerpoints' feature name to 'Location Message'.
...as well as a bunch of significant fixes / tweaks.

IMHO Mobile XT's strengths have always been it's excellent routing engine, great POI database and supplementary information and most of all it's competitive price! In version 4 I felt this was at the expense of a UI that looked somewhat dated, but with version 5 adopting a Nuvi-like look and feel, hopefully this will be overcome!

Garmin Mobile XT is £53.99 at eXpansys for UK and Ireland coverage, but don't forget you can instantly knock a tenner off that with our great discount vouchers! :-)

The image above probably says it all really... until the 31st October you can grab a Celio REDFLY - their Smartphone companion device - for only $199 as part of a special 'seed program'.

While the device is great, at the initial $499 or later $399 it was a tough call against one of the new generation of Netbooks (depending on your usage scenario of course), but at $199 it's a very much more appealing proposition!

To learn more about the REDFLY you can check out my original 'Ask Paul' thread. In Celio's own words, the REDFLY is 'a sleek clamshell design that includes an 8" display, a full function keyboard, and a touchpad mouse. Measuring just 1x6x9 inches and only 2 pounds, the REDFLY Mobile Companion offers over 8 hours of battery life and boots instantly! It also adds three new features - instant VGA output, access to USB flash drives, and the ability to charge your smartphone via USB.'

The killer features for me have always been the instant usability (no data held on the device), the stunning battery life and the great size. I know we have some REDFLY owners here on MoDaCo... pitch in with your thoughts on the device (and the price drop!)

P

PS I added one to the cart, and it came to $250 including UK delivery!

I was back in July last year when I first posted about the 'Orientation Aware Control' for the Compact Framework by Clarius Consulting. At the time I found it a great tool with fantastic potential, albeit a little quirky to implement with a bug or two.

Yesterday I set about writing a tool for i900 Omnia users to allow them to choose a default Samsung SIP, and I realised that making the application orientation aware was important - hence I revisited the OAC.

As it turns out, since I last visited, the OAC has had a significant update, which adds Visual Studio 2008 compatability and crucially seems to smooth the implementation considerably! You can read about the finished OmniaSIP product over in this topic (together with source), but the OAC now gets a big thumbs up from me! biggrin.gif For Omnia SIP, I have used the free version, which limits your application to only one form factor (i.e. in this case, 400x240). The full version however allows you to design layouts for any form factor you choose.

The OAC has a simple implementation process, an intuitive designer and works great... it comes heartily recommended now for all .net CF developers!

To learn more and to download the free community edition, head on over to the Clarius Consulting / OAC homepage.

Enjoy, and don't forget to check out the OmniaSIP source if you want to see the OAC in action!

By now you would have heard that WM7 is delayed...

Microsoft had to announce something to keep WM users happy so they are showing off IE6 for Windows Mobile 6. A free update is always good but with other free options like Opera and Skyfire ( Open beta in US, hopefully the rest of the world will get to use it soon ) does this news excite anyone ?

theunwired.net has got some pics of the browser in action. Trust me there is nothing to see there, if you are interested in this just jump on and have a look.

zzzz.. Wake me up when you have something to announce about Deepfish? Whatever happened to that project anyway?

Back at the start of 2008, I spoke with many software developers about the concept of a 'Windows Mobile Software Bundle' (codenamed Bundle.One).

Life as a Windows Mobile developer is rather difficult, and in an effort to expand the ways that developers can offer their products to end users, I have been exploring the viability of a bundle offering.

If you are a Mac user in particular, you will likely be familiar with the concept of bundles. In a nutshell, for a purchase price of around $49.99, you receive a selection of top applications at a massive discount. The Bundle. One project has been a considerable amount of time in planning and discussion but I am now at a stage where I need to solicit feedback from your guys to help test the viability of the bundle! Of course, the developers are offering their applications to the bundle at a considerable discount, so the success of the bundle is based on volumes of sales.

What I would like YOU to do, is to vote in the poll on this topic, to indicate your level of interest in such a bundle (news page readers, you need to click 'View Topic' to see the poll).

First some specifics about the bundle...
  • The cost will be $49.99, payable by credit / debit card or PayPal
  • The bundle will be available for both Pocket PC and Smartphone
  • The bundle will include AT LEAST 10 top applications, likely a couple more than that
  • The retail price of the bundle is expected to be in excess of $200
  • The licences in the bundle will be full retail licences
  • 100% of the revenue from the bundle will be distributed among the software developers. For my part, one of my applications will be included in the bundle.
Please do vote, discuss, forward this topic to anyone you think may be interested and even send this topic to developers who you would like to see in the bundle. Of course, space in Bundle. One is limited (although the exact set of apps is still unconfirmed, hence me not naming them here!) however if the first bundle is a success, future bundles can definitely follow.

Thanks for your time, and look forward to hearing your feedback smile.gif

I've just published an In Car Demo video of my CamerAware application running on the HTC Shift, as you can see here smile.gif

CamerAware is the speed camera alerting software for Windows Mobile, unique with it's incredibly good value £19.99 lifetime subscription, regular updates and well-respected database / coverage. CamerAware is compatible with both Pocket PC / Professional Devices and Smartphone / Standard devices.

In addition to this video, i'm pleased to announce that development on the next version of CamerAware has now restarted in earnest, after a hiatus due to other projects. The first fruits of this will be additional skins for new devices such as the Samsung Omnia and Palm Treo Pro. This will be followed by new Betas with new features, and the opportunity for registered users to input to the development cycle.

CamerAware is still available FREE to MoDaCo Plus members, and will remain at £19.99 until the launch of the next version, after which there will be a increase in price... so it's well worth getting in now smile.gif

Find out more and buy from this topic!

Enjoy!

OK OK, so this isn't TECHNICALLY newsworthy, but it's so cool I just had to post biggrin.gif

Our very own Monolithix is currently in Sweden at a Sony Ericsson event, and managed to capture the picture below on his flight out, using his Vario III and CamerAware. Kudos...

Back in August I posted about 2 new batteries for the HTC Shift from Mugen Power, the 4400mAh HLI-X9500ML @ $169.95 and the 6600mAh HLI-X9500XL @ $239.95.

Well i'm pleased to say the batteries are now in production and shipping, and I have video'd the 6600mAh beast to give you an idea of what it's like compared to the standard battery, and how it looks on the Shift.

Together with the recent GPS enabling ROM, I have to say this has given my Shift a new lease of life, and I am (once again!) very very impressed with the quality of the battery. IMHO it's a must have for Shift owners!

Take a look (if you are that way inclined) and let me know your thoughts! wink.gif
