I was thinking, I'd like to include a little graphic on the About page of HelloTwitFace that says "works with MoDaCo AppToDate" or something...the MoDaCo dude would look cool on a badge! It could form part of an affiliate type program.... Definitely planning to have AppToDate 'badges', probably not MoDaCo branded but with AppToDate's own branding. I need someone graphically talented to create these (and an AppToDate icon for that matter!) AppToDate obviously feeds back the stats to you, so why not have it feed back info about the appx.xml files on devices, you could gather this info, take the path to the online XML and build it into an automated software directory webpage. Where you could download the XML file for every app that has AppToDate support. Then when I as an ATD user want an app I just check your directory and download it with ATD. Potentially a zero management catalogue of all apps with support, you could add a set of tags like <public library> yes </public library> to allow people to opt in / out. Software discovery forms a very important part of the ATD future plans... I am focusing atm on getting the Beta looking right, then rolling to a 1.0 release (adding all the error checking etc. etc.) and most important of all, getting as many developers onboard as possible! When that is done, then we can look at expanding. Also, how about the ability to include Beta deployments? i.e. <beta cab> and <beta xml> type tags? Nice idea! OK, so here's how i'm planning to do this.
Imagine a device that is VGA, OS 4.2 and PPC. AppToDate will search the XML in the following order: - Look for a caburl for VGA, OS 4.2 and PPC - If failed, look for a caburl with OS 4.2 and PPC - If failed, look for a caburl with PPC - If failed, use the default caburl with no specifics This way, you can support as specific a CAB as you like, or just have a simple one caburl file. If you want to do PPC and SP only, thats easy too. Good solution? This will be in the next build! P -------------------- Paul O'Brien - Microsoft MVP, Mobile Devices, MoDaCo.network Founder. QUOTE or just have a simple one caburl file That's quite important to me, with very limited experience of all this stuff Perhaps I'm being niaive, but I thought that screen res was something that you could code for (so that your app adjusts automatically). If that's the case is there really a need for a res "setting"? |

Some developers have requested this, and do have seperate VGA and QVGA CABs. Each to their own
I will point out that the very basic XML that is posted at the top of the developer support topic will ALWAYS work. As new stuff gets added, backwards compatability will 100% be retained! Sounds like a great set of solutions, but another possible addition to the checks would be a "Free" or "pay money for this" set of tags, so a user can upgrade the free version or use something like your PayPal donate tool to pay for the upgrade or maybe just have it show a url for the pay to use version.
In fact, a way to integrate this tool and the PayPal utility anyway would be awesome! Maybe a <paypalurl> tag in the xmls? This post has been edited by l3v5y: Apr 18 2008, 21:07 -------------------- |

1. Yeah, something along these lines will happen in the future.
2. Not checked it out, but will have a look. 3. It is on Smartphone, looking into how to fix for PPC. P -------------------- Paul O'Brien - Microsoft MVP, Mobile Devices, MoDaCo.network Founder. Check out my Blog! £10 off a £20 spend at eXpansys - click for details |

I think I've found a bug.
On my device (HTC Touch) if you click Cancel while it's "Checking for N updates" it gets to 100% complete (presumably skipping the actual checks) but then the hour-glass icon doesn't go away. Ever. Needs a soft reset afterwards to clear it (although the device still responds you can't do anything with ATD) |

Worked OK for me, but I did the update through ATD itself (rather than downloading the new CAB manually)
The self-opening thing worked too |

Wah!! I can't seem to get the latest build working. It says it installs successfully but the shortcut's gone and I can't find the executable. I tried redownloading the cab a couple times. Is it just me? Which device John? P -------------------- Paul O'Brien - Microsoft MVP, Mobile Devices, MoDaCo.network Founder. Check out my Blog! £10 off a £20 spend at eXpansys - click for details |

Could be a setup dll issue, so i've removed it from the online CAB. Please redownload and try again!

Better, but hmmm. Now it installs, I see the shortcut and after it says "checking for 1 update... 100% complete", I see "an unexpected error has occurred in apptodate.exe. Select quit and then restart this program or select details for more information". The top of the details says:
Microsoft.AGL.Common.MISC.HandleAr() at System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser.Navigate() at System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser.set_DocumentText() ... |

Hey Paul,
I like your apptodate app.. It's a great applicatoin with a lot of potential, if other developers participate. I just updated (via apptodate) to the new version and saw the option save CAB's to Storarge Card. This is a very good option, but i belive it would be even better if i could select the folder in the storage card where all the cabs are saved. I have a folder on the root of the storage card named "Apps" and it would be great when all the downloaded applicatios where downloaded automatically to that folder. I could imagine some else has a similar folder called Cabs or whatever. In this way every one could download the cabs directly where they want it to.. Edit: I see the ApptodateCAB folder on the storage Card, but a folder specified by the user is more userfriendly i think. This post has been edited by ghozd: Apr 24 2008, 13:25 |
