Device(s): eee pc 2G

Hi everyone - I'm a new eee PC user, looking for some help.

I recieved my 2G Surf a couple of days ago. I travel a bit on business and whilst my Blackberry is useful for staying in touch with the office, it's not really practical for responding properly to e-mails, viewing Word documents etc. On the other hand, even my 12" screen laptop is to bulky to carry around all the time. Hence the eee PC !

Anyway, got it up and running easily, connected to my home network with no problems. I then set about trying to connect - via Firefox - to the Secure Internet Access application we have at work, which enables me to view all of my office e-mails & files etc. That's where I ran into the problem ! I get to a particular screen on Firefox which says I have a missing plug-in, namely Java Runtime Environment. The message box then says that Java Runtime Environment is not available, alongside a box which says "manual install". On clicking manual install, I'm taken to Sun Microsystems website where a number of files are available. I've downloaded a couple of them. Unfortunately, unlike Windows, it's not at all intuitive how these files should be installed !!

Can anyone give me a quick "idiots guide" on what to do here !

Your help would be really appreciated.

Thanks for reading.

Give this method a try:

java install firefox on linux

The gist of it is:
From the terminal, paste in this line:
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts

Once you get the eula, click on the tab key to highlight ok, then select yes. When it is done, the plugins should be properly configured.

Get rid of the original soft link first to avoind any further complications.
