now before you all shout at me, iam just asking, and i know it is ilegal in this country, but can the imei number be changed on the i900, i think i might have been had , when i bought my phone from a mate ,i was a upgrade for him, he is the account owner, he may stop paying his n/provider, so that may leave me with a dead phone if they block it , if they block it, and no the phone was not stolen, we think he has lost his job, thats why the phone was sold, but i think he may stop paying his subs, any help would help, it is still alright at the moment, if he stop paying his subs, how long does it take them to block it , if they did, it was orange, but the phone had never had the original sim put in it, and it was not branded orange, thanks guys

You cannot change the IMEI number of any handset, and if it gets blocked by the networks then you are stuffed.

Sorry the lawyer in me can't help sticking an oar in:

Why don't you suggest to your friend that you take over the contract with the network provider? If he agrees, simply get him to call them (be present when he does this) and 1) change his billing address to your address 2) authorise you on the account so you can call them too, and 3) change the direct debit details to your bank account.

If you don't want/need the SIM card, just downgrade it to the cheapest plan possible.

Just my 2 cents worth...

to be honest... im not sure i fully understand your predicament so i cant comment on what the phone company would do.

However... if the network does decide to block the IMEI of the handset it will become unusable as a phone. It wont matter what SIM you put into it... it just will not be able to connect as the handset will have been effectively blacklisted.

I am not certain they would block the phone itself, unless they ask for it back and he refuses. They will block the SIM card registered to the account, and they will start legal proceedings against the account holder if he doesn't attempt to come to some sort of agreement to comply with his contractual obligation.

At any event, he needs to contact the operator and explain his financial difficulty, and try to reach an agreement.

If they do block the phone, there is nothing more you can do, apart from using it as a simple PDA

Actually I don't know much about the blocking process, I'm just saying about my thinking.
I don't think Orange can block the phone. I mean, yes, they can block their orange sim card. But they can't block you phone.
I don't think it's possible to block your phone only via telecom network. If it's possible via this method, it's also possible to be cracked, coz it should be a kind of software process. Or they can put your phone in their blacklist, that means you can still use other brand's sim.

Since the guy had already sold you the phone (hope you still keep the evidence), you are the owner now, you have right to use the phone. The legal stuff is that guy's problem. Here are my suggestions for you. 1)If they block the sim card, just simply buy another brand's sim card to use your phone. 2) There are lots of place to unlock the phone restriction if your phone has.

And European if I understood correctly. My N95 got stolen last year and I was told by Orange that the phone would be useless not only in the UK but in Europe as well. However outside these countries i.e. Asia etc. then the phone is usable as they are not part of the blocking database that the European countries have.

Am not sure what will happen in your case but the Sim at least would be blocked. Considering the Omnia has only been out less than two months I would be surprised if they didn't block the IMEI as well...

I would suggest you speak to your mate and find a solution before any of this happens....

If your buying an upgrade handset it would be a good idea to ask them for the receipt for the phone as for any warranty the manufacturer will ask for it.
