Q: CamerAware won't connect to my GPS, help!
We're here to help Ensure you have created an outgoing COM port connected to your GPS, and that Bluetooth is switched on! Q: I've found a bug! Now what? Post a message in the bug reports forum, and we will validate the bug. If it is a bug, we'll then fix it, and you will be able to download the fix using auto-update. Q: There's a feature i'd like to see in a future release, can you build it in? Post a message in the feature requests forum, and we'll see what we can do Q: I'm getting alerted to a camera, even though it's set up to catch people going the other way. Is that right? CamerAware fully supports Camera direction, but is reliant on that information being in the database Q: I'm getting alerted to a camera that isn't there! What's that about? This can sometimes happen if there is an error in the database, or there is a camera on a parallel road close to where you are travelling. If you are on a device other with a resolution other than 240x240 or 176x220, you can use the 'X' button at the base of the screen to notify us that this camera no longer exists. Q: I see I can download database updates directly from the program, how big are they? Database updates are very highly compressed, and are currently approximately 80k in size! If you are not on a flat rate data plan however, you might like to consider connection via WiFi or ActiveSync pass thru before updating. Application updates are larger, around 3MB, so may be best installed from the desktop. Q: I don't like the look of the application, can I change it? Sure! In the Skins subdirectory of the CamerAware application, you will find XML based skins for each device type and form factor, together with a GIF background. You can change these to change the look of the application! I'll be posting Photoshop PSD files to make this easier very soon. Another quick tip, you can reload the skin XML and reapply the skin in CamerAware by hitting the '7' button. Hitting the '9' button populates the screen with sample data. Great for skin designing Q: Why isn't CamerAware free? Wouldn't it be great if all software was free? Unfortunately CamerAware represents a significant investment of time on my part, not to mention a number of expensive tools to enable it's development. Finally, a proportion of each sale is paid to the suppliers of the camera database. By buying CamerAware, you're buying a cool application now, but also making an investment in the future development of the application and the database. Q: I like the position upload feature, but I don't want the page to be publicly visible. Is this possible? Not at this time. Significant enhancements are planned to the upload feature (viewing a list of past journeys, changing upload frequency, password protecting journey maps etc), so watch this space! Q: How many devices can I install CamerAware on? You can install the base CamerAware application on as many devices as you like Q: How do I view the points i've uploaded? To view your uploaded track, visit http://www.cameraware.net/tracker.php?mid=X where X is your member ID. You can find this in any post you have made on MoDaCo (if you look to the left, you'll see my member ID is '1'). Q: Where can I buy a Bluetooth GPS suitable for us with CamerAware? If you're in the market for buying a Bluetooth GPS, I highly recommend Semsons. They are USA based but ship worldwide, with great products at great prices. You can pick up units such as this i-trek M5 for only $90 including a free vent mount and GPSgate software... a great little GPS with auto on-off for power saving, and a miniUSB charging port. Q: CamerAware's great, but how can I safely mount my phone in my car? For mounting your phone in your car, you can't beat a Brodit mount specifically made for your car and your device! Check out http://www.DSLDevelopments.com to see what is available! Q: Can I force CamerAware to use a particular COM port? You can do this by selection Options -> GPS Settings in the CamerAware menus. Q: Why doesn't CamerAware alert me to red light cameras? CamerAware is about making you safer on the roads, therefore red light cameras are not included in the database. If there's a red light, stop! Q: What does the little red box mean? The little red box is the number of cameras in a red-alert position, that is they are within one mile, and a direct threat given your current direction of travel. Q: What does the little yellow box mean? The little yellow box is the number of cameras in an amber-alert position, that is they are within one mile (your current direction of travel is not taken into account). Q: What does the number below the compass point mean? The number below the compass point is your current heading in degrees. Q: What filenames should I use for custom sounds? The standard sound is SafetyCameraAhead.wav. You can also use SafetyCameraAheadSlowDown.wav, SafetyCameraAheadCAMERATYPE.wav and SafetyCameraAheadCAMERATYPESlowDown.wav. e.g. SafetyCameraAheadGATSOSlowDown.wav would sound when you are approaching a GATSO Camera over speed. Have a look in the 'Sounds' directory of your CamerAware installation to see what filenames you could use. Q: When uploading position, what determines when the map stops / ends? A 30 minute period without points being uploaded determines that the next point is the start of a new journey, and a journey is also flagged as ended when you hit 'Disconnect' in the application. -------------------- My current devices of choice - HTC Touch HD (Miri 6.5 v11), White T-Mobile G1 (Haykuro ADP1.5Hr3-A2SD), Samsung Blackjack II (6.1 stock) ![]() |
