ok..here's what i just did...
cut the headphone wires just above (abt 3 cm) the microphone/button. solder a 3.5mm stereo in-line socket to the wires (mic/button end) now you can plug almost any headphones into the new socket and they will work. if you solder a 3.5mm stereo plug to the headphone ends.... you can still use your existing headphones as if there was never anything done. but heres the good bit... if you buy a car cassette audio converter (maplin electronics) you can plug that into the new socket & hear your phone on your car stereo....instant hands free kit for about £6 ish! of course you could just play mp3's from the phone....works great...have fun. |

I can't quite picture what you mean! Is it possible for you to post a picture of your headphones?
I really wanna use different headphones but don't want to lose mic and volume control fuctionality. I am interested in your technique. -------------------- Vinesh

Nice idea I might try this, the only problem as such is that
you would then have an even longer cable

longer cable??? not bad actually! am I the only one, who thinks the current cable is too short? Especially if you yave to get round some clothes (e.g. under a jacket or something!)

Great idea. Now I'll be able to plug my phone into the amp in my living room. That will certainly cut down on CD burns and storage.
What is the general opinion of the best type of headphones? I find the headphones that came with the SPV don't produce great quality sound (little bass) and they keep falling out of my ears. Also, those headphones that are used in recording studios (the ones that cover the whole of the ear and stick out like a dome shape, with the head band over the top of the head) don't appeal. What other sorts of headphones, which produce good quality sound, would yous recommend? -------------------- |

I just took a soldering iron to my headphones and soldered two new Sony eapieces on in place of the originals. Cover the joints with a bit of heatshrink tubing et voila! The soldering a plug on idea is a good one, although I think it would make the headphones a bit heavy. Also, wouldn't you loose the microphone becuase it'd be about 50cm further away from where it should be? If I want a 3.5mm output on my SPV I use a Maplin 2.5-3.5mm adaptor, but it's a bit bulky, and you have to be careful it doesn't bend your headphone socket, which will totally screw up your SPV (the good 'ol "stuck in headset profile" bug!)
As far as good headphones go nothing i've tried worked that well, becuase the SPV sound circuitry is pretty sh*te by HiFi standards - way too splashy in the treble and no bass to speak of. It was a bit better when I plugged it into a mini system, but I think that's because I had the bass turned up fully! It's in desperate need of a tone control methinks!

YEP!! Bass+Treble control would be a real treat! (especially Bass).
There is no easy solution at this moment. I simply took the earbuds off my Sony Groove (older model) and replaced the black plastic bits on SPV headset with those - much better now, coz I can get to work without loosing them every 5 minutes.. The earbuds are the ones that actually go 'into' your ear a little. Why are you guys all obsessed by bass?? :?: :?: everyone knows treble is the key to a good clean sounding audio track! a sound system doesn’t have to have massive bass to be good..

Massive amounts of bass is bad from a sound quality point of view, but just some would be good on the SPV! As far as treble goes it's very splashy, and can grate if you listen for too long. The key to a clean sounding audio track is it being well balanced in all frequencies, including (but not exclusively) bass and treble, which the SPV is not!

I am just saying when you start mismatching impedances input or output you may run the risk of damaging your equipment.... ok its not going to explode or anything but i am just saying be careful.
Yes I have listened to the SPV quite a lot and I was fairly impressed with the sound, remember it is a phone and not a sophisticated Sony Minidisk. I found my MP3's that real one player copied from CD sound fine. Where are you getting your MP3's from? what format? -------------------- James Lovell

Personally I use wma's becuase they offer smaller filesizes for the same quality as an mp3. Most of my music comes from CDs, and I normally encode at 64Kbits becuase the quality doesn't increase much with higher bitrates than that (even a 192Kb file sounds pretty crap).

I'm impressed that my phone can play mp3s at all, but the sound quality does not impress me. Putting a better DAC in the SPV wouldn't have been difficult but sadly HTC clearly felt costs had to be cut somewhere (surely they wouldn't have let the standard headset out into the wild otherwise!)

Has anyone else found that the headphones/hands-free kit that comes with the SPV isn't very good? My girlfriend has said that there is a lot of background noise. Far more than on my old Nokia.
