Wi-Fi trade body approves first WLAN mobile phones

The Wi-Fi Alliance (WFA) has certified the first devices the integrate 802.11 wireless networking with mobile phone network communications for their successful interoperability with other WLAN products.

The organisation also extended a hand to the mobile phone industry with a promise that it will explore its particular needs for Wi-Fi certification.

Not all the newly certified products are available today. HP's iPaq h6315 is, as are SanDisk's Connect Wi-Fi SD Card and Intermec's 760 Mobile Computer. However, the WFA said it has also certified upcoming handhelds, including Motorola's MPx Windows Mobile smart phones and Nokia's 9500 Communicator, both due out by the end the year.

The recruitment drive for mobile phone companies, meanwhile, should further strengthen the Wi-Fi brand, particularly once more devices use 802.11 for VoIP rather than data exchange and Internet connectivity. Corporates and consumers alike will want to be sure that new 802.11-equipped will work with their existing Wi-Fi networks, and that's the pledge the WFA makes with its certification programme.

Working out how to convince the world's many mobile phone makers and network operators of that value is the job of the working group whose formation the WFA announced this week.

On reading into this i belive it relates to the mpx, the pocket pc phone edition device to be released near the end of this year / start of next.

Annoyingly people often refer to these devices as smartphones, which makes things confusing :/

There is nothing in this article to indicate we will see wifi in the mpx220 or similar devices.

I concur.

And even as an XDA2 owner, I HATE it when companies that should know better refer to these things as SmartPhones.

BUUUUT...

As we ALREADY have devices like this now with w-fi coming on board, such as the M2000, if this really IS new 'news' then, I sincerely hope the implication IS that it's gonna make its way soon into our little SmartPhones as WE know them.

That's my take on it anyhow... Here's hoping.

so theres is a testing standard that the mpx has passed. Just becuase there is a testing standard, in no way does that mean we are anymore or less likely to see wifi in a smartphone

If the mpx had to go through this the m2000 will have to go through the same testing.

Cool. Now I'm waiting for the first, most cool looking combination of a small phone with WLAN, QVGA 262k display, 1.3 - 2.0 megapixel cam smile.gif Powered by Pocket PC OS, an MPx220-looking phone with the same functionality as the Qtek 9090 / SPV M2000 would be great biggrin.gif

The Motorola MPx is my next phone. The WiFi is a bonus for me, but not a primary concern.
