Thanks to MSMobiles.com for the heads up and the screenshot.

A [very] early Skype beta for Smartphone has been posted on the Skype forums!

Featuring only basic functionality such as text messages and NOT voice, the build is an exciting glimpse of what the future holds for Skype on Smartphone.

You can find the thread here on the Skype forums, info posted below! smile.gif

We have early version of Skype for Smartphone available. Please provide feedback directly to me or in this forum.

Download is already available at http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-smartphone

Below are release notes and mini-FAQ

----------------------- Relese notes ----------------------------------------
Skype for Smartphone BETA
* participate in Skype network - log in, presence
* instant messaging
* centrally stored contact list support

Things to be aware of
* no voice (yet)
* network traffic usage - depending on your buddy list network usage can be quite large - up to several megabytes per day even without actively chatting, this is important if you pay per megabyte. There is option automatically disconnect then Skype is in idle and it's switched on by default, feel free to switch it off if you have flat-free rate.

----------------------- FAQ ----------------------------------------
Q: Why not voice?
A: CPU power and network connectivity of currently available phones is not sufficient to enable Skype voice calls

Q: Why such big network traffic consuption?
A: Skype is built on peer-to-peer platform and by nature it requires more communication with other peers than simple server-based messaging. We are working to lower network usage in future versions.

Hmm, so my c500 is limited by the cpu to ever use voice calls with skype.

I have a bluetooth network athome and would love to just use my smartphone athome to call people for free with skype.

So, at the moment you can only send messages but it uses lots of GPRS - not a lot of use for those of us that pay by the meg. I pay for enough voice minutes so i don't have to worry about voice calls anyway so I can't see much oint in Skype for me personally.

I have unlimited gprs and I still don't see a point to it. Oh boy, yet another text IM app that uses far more bandwidth than all the IM apps already out there and maybe one day it'll suck up all the bandwidth and cpu to have undoubtly lousy sounding voip on a....phone....that sounds great.....hmmm....what's the point again?

Desktop Skype VoIP has great quality sound. I regularly use it to make international calls with SkypeOut at good rates as well as free calls to other computers.

On a 3G phone, this could be great - not so sure with GPRS, but isn't that how the newer push-to-talk phones work?

Handy with wi-fi enabled phones too, if you're at home or in a hotspot.

I certainly see your point about this version though, especially as I'm not on flat rate GPRS (does any network offer it in the UK?)

Well, given that 3G and wifi aren't options now or any time soon for almost everyone, it's pointless. In fact, this doesn't strike me as anything more than a novelty for anything less than a pda phone. Even Opera doesn't generate the interest it did six months ago and it's somewhat useful. I think a much more useful system would be using your cellphone to call your home number where you have a computer set up to translate between the cell call and voip. Sure, it's still a call and uses voice time but you'll be able to understand what someone is saying and you'll still save loads on what would otherwise be long distance or international calling rates.

Agreed. I love Skype, but without unlimited GPRS, it's pointless. Great on my laptop with a 12.99 webcam with microphone from Dixons though smile.gif

Skype wont work for me, on my Orange SPV it keeps giving me this message:

"ERROR
Can't find "Skype" (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available."

iv tried re-installing it, still gives me the same error.

i tried checking if skype is compatible with Smartphone 2002, cant find any details of that anywhere.

can anyone help?

thnx

Does/ Is this (going) to work on CDMA network phones such as the Samsung i600 on Verizon? I plan to upgrade to the i730 later when Magneto comes already installed from factory but am stuck with THE useless uberphone for now.
