Can someone please explain to me how I can update the firmware (?) on my phone. I have 1.30 but I keep reading about people ugrading to 1.43. How is this done?

The only legal way is to download the software from Motorola or your operator.
When / if this will be available I don't know.

Also we can only allow links to ROM downloads from manufacturer or operator sites.
