One problem with a nominal charge for signed versions... although this would be good for funding the thing... I don't know how it would fit in with the GPL, and since a number of the projects being ported are GPL based you'd want to have a lawyer check it....

My thoughts...
The SPV is a great phone, imho. However to be honest it's the MS smartphone operating system that really interests me. If Sendo would have released the Z100, I would probably have one of those right now not the SPV. Also in a years time, or maybe sooner, I'll be looking for the next bit of hardware that gives me the capabilities that the SPV gives me right now. So what am I really interested in here, well applications that run on the smartphone platform. So there are potentially 1,000's, cool I'll stump up money to help this along (before u get ur hopes up I'm only talking of 10-20 quid here). What about Certification....I get to this in a bit. Someone previously mentioned a separate website for this topic. I agree, a seperate forum/site for MS smartphone application development, not limited to the spv or though at the moment of course that's all we have so the foucs will currently be spv. I suggest this site has a members section, which will contain the downloads for signed and beta applications for testing. Members can join for a fixed fee, say £10 per annum. So if we have 50 members (poll says 57 I believe) for the site we have £500 (maybe more once the thing gets rolling), less site/domian hosting which should be less than £100 we still have £400. The site may generate a sponsor also (MS, Amazing Games, Developers, even Orange ?) after all from Oranges point of view they get apps signed and we distribute them for free which enhances the desirability of their product, and they don't have to do anything. This site is dedicated to software/application developent for the MS Smartphone Platform (currently only the SPV). Next we have to decide what we spend the money on, of course the issue preventing development right now is certification, so we do the Baltimore thingy. Obviously if we want to distribute the software to the wider community then this can be done through the Modaco site/forum. I have a vision that the new site could contain a multitude of downloads for locked and unlocked phones, full and beta versions, and would be used by developers also as a method to get their apps tested. Well just an idea, apologies if it's already been suggetsed, one I believe could develop and genuinely has a chance for success, and worth a gamble at only £10/yr. Plus you are only paying a subscription to be a member of the site, no buying or selling of software (initially anyway). Whichever way we go, I'll send a cheque today for ten quid to get this ball rolling. Paul do you have a business address ? Cheers, Shire |

I think it's a bad idea to carge money to become a member - I don't feel it would be freeware then... But ok, 10£/year isn't much...
Well... changing topic: I was thinking about how to control Quake on the spv and came up with this:

Think the layout looks pretty good... its pretty much what doom needs too... cant keep trying to port games over and having them vertical. Need the width not the height when playing these sorts of games. Maybe allow a flip screen option somewhere?
But yeah, think the layout would work great. |

I've considered doing the rotate thing , i'm afraid that it will hurt the performance too much though , and control would be to awkward
it may come yet though |

Shire:
I agree there should be some "reward" for donating, however I think the idea of limiting software accessibiliy to a separate subscription only site for members only may put off some that have offered to give a straight donation. Also if any of the apps ported to SmartPhone are open source under GPL you would have to allow full access to the source/compiled application. This would then remove any incentive for people to sign up to a members only area, other than to have the oppertunity (sp) to beta test. Imho if a separate site were to be set up it would have to be fully available to the entire community, as this is what we are trying the encourage and develop. We could set up a donation scheme and use it to host and sign applications. Sponsorship is another option. By the result of the poll, if it really is the members feeling, we could buy 75 signatures. I'm sure developing and testing 75 applications would see us through the majority of 2003, then another donation scheme could be set up when the signatures are used up. Firstly we need a few applcations running stable one the scheme is going, then we need incentives to donate, and a totally accessible site to distribute. -------------------- This months MoDaCo WinMo Week device: the MWg Zinc II! Hi all
at the moment I'm investigating allowing the screen to be flipped by the user - portrait + landscape left + landscape right I've actually found that with the current code, the landscapes are running marginally better (although they currently wrap - not hard to fix though) I'm working through the code trying to squeeze speed out of it I suspect that the only way to get this really moving is to rewrite some of the intensive rouines in ARM code directly - ugh! I'm actually working on the hardware now, not the emulator - which was a speed shock MBoden - I'd love to see the SPVDoom code to see if there's any graphics optimisations that could be used in Quake probably going to do a lot of coding over the weekend to see if I can get this to a reasonable speed As for the controls they are very much still up in the air, until I've got the code running at a decent pace it's not worth thinking about too hard (although I've get several layouts sketched out for testing) Would people prefer to be able to define the keys themselves? muff |

exams suk
mboden and I are already talking Dade's phone is up and running again and I've got some hardware now (although I end up having to re-crack it far too often at the moment - these things were not designed for dev'ing on) as to pak files, that's a whole other can of worms - whilst developing I'm now running in r_drawflat mode (so no wall texturing) - but when I get the code moving decently I'll try to decide what to do about them (I suspect that they all need remaking - and the monster skins as well - for filesize as much as anything) sound is currently disabled - as it's just asking too much at the moment I've got all the menus etc rescaling, but again all the graphics are up for re-making later the engine itself is running far too slowly and inconsistantly at the moment (I suspect that because it uses a large heap that the phone is struggling to clear it), so over the weekend I'm going to rip all the code apart and try to find the bottlenecks of course it could just be that it's too much for the phone to handle will keep the group informed.... muff |

Really you should be able to make it work since itll be about just how far you can rip the graphics too pieces, pixel doubling might even make it wokr faster, nasty hack but it works

I think that these are the most important buttons in a shooter (except the shoot-button of course the reason why I put the strafe buttons there is 'cause then you could strafe at the same time as you where walking... That's hard to do with the joypad... on my solution you use both hands - the right on the strafe and jump buttons and the left to the rest... It's quite easy to do... Try holding your phone like that... //imp -------------------- ![]() |

I think the look up/down is the major drawback and one thats not going to be able to be functional on a hardcore gamer level but thats the best way you sugested i can think of too.
Think i would have the jump and fire buttons the other way round as you need to use the the fire button more when moving and thats easier if its on the other side. Take Doom on SPV for example and you will know what i mean. Good idea on key mappings and great work on the port. I look forward to the release of this hopefully soon... -------------------- ![]() |
