Hi,

Does anybody know if it's possible to disable charging the SPV c550 phone when using the USB cable and ActiveSync software? I would prefer to charge my phone fully when the battery is drained to prolong battery life, rather than for a few minutes whilst synchronising with my laptop.

Any help to answer this question would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

I would doubt it is possible, as charging the phone has nothing at all to do with Software - it is hardware based, via the cable - any power down the USB line, and the phone will charge - as you can already vouch for yourself, in that the phone charges as soon as you connet the cable, NOT when ActiveSync starts - even killing ActiveSync as a running process will not stop it charging.

Current down the USB cable instigates charging mate, NOT software control of any sort.

It MAY be possible to get a USB cable that does NOT have the charging pins connected, but might still allow a data based connection, but I have no idea if this is really possible, or how or where you would go about getting such a cable.

Is this still needed with current batteries? I don't believe so. Ni-Cad batteries had this so called 'memory effect', not Lithium-Ion or the newer Polymer batteries. AFAIK Li-Ion batteries might be affected but only in 7 or 8 years use. Most phones do not last that long.

Shadamehr - That's exactly what I thought a few months ago and so didn't even bother asking the question....the reason I ask the question now is because I read the following thread which suggests ActiveSync has to be installed and so charging could be software controlled...I found this hard to beleive myself, but tried it and indeed the charging light only lit on the phone after ActiveSync was installed.

http://www.modaco.com/Charging_through_USB-t231726.html

I'm aware of the memory effect (or less so in this case) of the batteries, although I still would rather not charge it from my laptop for short periods...personal preference I guess, crazy or not.

Thanks for the replies so far.

A modified cable is something I'd be interested in, and sounds like it would be the solution if data can get through without the power connections. I'm fairly nifty with a soldering Iron, or in this case a pair of snippers...I would just need to work out which wire to cut.....the red one wink.gif ? Thanks I think I may need to get hold of the pin layout and try this if nobody knows of a software option.

FWIW, you do not need to discharge/recharge LiIon or LiPolymer batteries. In fact, these batteries function better if you do short & frequent recharge cycles.

The only time you ever need to fully discharge a LiIon battery is if it ever reports the incorrect amount of charge (i.e. 70% full, when it's really 45% full) as this will allow the chip inside the battery to recalibrate itself.
