Two Qtek 8500 problems - clock and voice tags

I really like this new Qtek 8500 phone, but I've run into two annoying problems so far:

The clock: I keep finding that my phone's clock jumps by several hours. I've seen go both foward and backward, but typically by whole hours, and typically by 5 hours, which is my Eastern US time zone offset from GMT (not counting Daylight Saving Time).

Is the "Automatic Time/Time zone" setting a bad feature that I should turn off? Can I leave it turned on, but then if I do, do I need to play some trick like setting my time zone to GMT?

Voice tag: I set up a few voice tags for voice dialing, and they do seem to work, but they never play back. After recording a voice tag, I'm supposed to hear it play back, but I don't. I'm supposed to be able to click on the field showing that there's a voice tag that's been set up and hear it play, but nothing happens when I do. If I go back and look at my contacts after adding the voice clip, all I see is the option to "Add Voice Tag", as if there's no voice tag already there, even though I can speak into the phone and get that contact to dial by voice.

I tried to find a way to reach QTek customer support, but couldn't find anything that will work for me. I've sent an e-mail to the online store where I bought the phone (phonesource-usa.com, who I was already pissed at for their unfriendly "all sales final" policy -- they refused to take the phone back even before I'd opened the box), but I'm beginning to wonder if I've been sold gray market merchandise.

Other people have apparently been solving a problem with missed phone calls (not a problem I've experienced yet) by installing iMate Smartflip software on their Qtek 8500s. Does that sound like a good approach to my problems? If so, anyone know where a good "how to" on doing this can be found?

Your bugs are the first I have heard of them. The clock thing sounds like some tower sending you the wrong time, turning of the automatic time function should fix that. I just tested the voice tag on my qtek 8500 but I dont have this bug. The missed call problem is very annoying but doesnt seem to affect that many europeans. My phone rings but when I try to answer it will disconnect the call and say 1 missed call.

If you still want to unlock your phone and flash it with the imate rom (which I dont recommend you do unless you get the missed call problem) then go to www.imei-check.co.uk and unlock it (costs £20), then download the rom from your regular torrent site and flash it. Remember flashing it can void your warrenty etc. Hard to switch back to the old rom as well if qtek doesnt release a new one.

There's no clear software/firmware version numbers I can find, just the Windows Mobile version number, and "Radio Version" and "RIL Version", whatever the hell those mean. For whatever its worth, those numbers, respectively, are: 5.1.195 (Build 14955.2.3.0), 4.1.13.17_02.32.31, and 2.002.

Is this stuff earlier, later, or the same as what you have?

My phone was purchased as an unlocked phone... at least, it's not locked to any cellular service carrier. Is there some other level of locking, like being locked to Qtek, that I'd have to get unlocked before trying the iMate firmware?

I'd rather hold off on changing the code too, but unless I hear more from phonesource-usa.com (Cellular Phone Trading, LLC), it looks like they might have left me high and dry with a gray market phone that Qtek won't support. It won't matter if I void my warranty if I don't have any warranty support anyway! mad.gif

I've got the same version. Check under settings \ System Information and se that your rom version is 1.02.252.1 as well... The phone comes unlocked, it is however CID locked so that you can only flash it with qtek roms, thats why imei-check charges £20 to unlock it.

Qtek har supporting it, its confirmed that they are working on a rom update but they are not very fast.

I have the same proble with clock. My time zone is GMT+1. And every time I set the clock it jump + 1 hour after restart of the phone (the Automatic Time/Time Zone is Enabled). My workaround is to set the clock - 1 hour compare to local time and restart the phone. Than it is correct. ohmy.gif))))))

I got the "all sales final" guy to agree that this phone was defective and that since Qtek didn't have any official US support that he'd offer me a refund, since any phone he'd send back would likely have the same problems, and I'd not be able to get any replacement he could sent fixed.

If Qtek had US support, these problems weren't so bad that I couldn't have lived with them for a short time, but I wouldn't want to be stuck with the phone like this forever, or have to hack the phone back to health on my own with BitTorrent-acquired software.

I'll wait three months (like I should have in the first place anyway) until my Verizon contract runs out, and if this phone still looks like the best choice, I'll get the i-mate version of the phone, which sounds like it has more reliable software than the Qtek, as well as US tech support.

Time/Date:
I have had the same time/date problem with my Qtek 8500. Enabling the auto time/time zone feature changes the time and date periodically. I am using T-Mobile in Seattle. I ended up disabling the feature and have had no problems.

Voice Tag:
I use Microsoft's Voice Command instead of the tagging. VC is great. Seriously, it is well worth $20 (or whatever it costs): it works well, you recognizes pretty much any name, you don't have to record "tags" and it suppots more than just name lookup. You can ask things like, "what time is it", "what meetings do I have today", "what is my next appointment", "Play Music", etc.

I am currently beta testing their v1.6 and it does successfully work over my BT headset. Very, very cool.

You're using Voice Command on a WM50 Smartphone? I thought it only worked for Pocket PC's?

Yes, VC on a smartphone. I used to use v1.5 on my MPX220 smartphone (Windows Mobile 2003) but it did not support BT (at least not on the 220). v1.6 seems to work well enough on the Qtek 8500 over BT.

How did you get a copy of v1.6 of voice command? Anyway to post it on the net for others to download? By the way how were you able to use voice command instead of tagging? Were you able to map the voice tag button to launch voice command instead?

I've had this problem also, and there is a simple solution. When you record a voice tag, you will hear a beep, or a sound playing that indicates you should record the voice tag, such as "Bob". What you should do, is wait about half a second or longer and then say "Bob", and you will hear it repeat back to you. The problem lies in the fact that you have to wait for the phone to finish playing the entire sound before starting your voice tag, or else it only catches half the word, or nothing at all, which is the problem that you are having.
