Device(s): Orange M3100

I have an Orange M3100 - great machine - and I have come across a strange 'feature'. wink.gif

Trying any one of the three in-car USB power adapters for my Prophet / Typhoon, none of them work with the Hermes device. Is this what others have experienced, or am I on my own here?

The phone has developed a seperate and even more bizarre issue whereby it does not charge properly with the PC USB connector or the included mains adapter.

Should I expect everything to be okay when I receive my replacement device tomorrow, or is the in-car issues known?

Cheers,

Sam

That's good news. New one arrives tomorrow. Device doing some very strange things, so a fresh start looks like the best option. Will post whether the charging works with the replacement machine.

There does seem to be an issue with charging as you will see from other posts and I have had my Vario II lock-up after overnight charging using plug charger - needs soft reset. Let us know if your new hermes is any better!

Also, my previous PPC was an MDA compact (Jam) and a know problem with these was that standard unbranded car usb chargers would not work. I ended up buying a genuine T-mobile charger which was in fact manufactured by Kondor. This also works succesfully with my Vario II.

Got new phone. Still no charging from three different USB in-car adapters. Annoying. Any ideas, or has the voltage changed (such as a high powered requirement)?

I have had a similar problem when using TomTom on my way up to Scotland yesterday - I noticed the first time I plugged the USB charger into the my M3100 the charge light came on then at some stage along my travel it went back to the normal green flashing and the battery was not charging - a quick soft reset seem to fix the problem till I unpluged the charger and replugged it in again. A soft reset did the trick.

I bought the Rimax USB Multimedia Charger from Amazon and although I can't pin down a fault I think some thing odd is going on here.
Some times, and strangly not always, the device will fail to charge while connected to the 12V adaptor until I press the power button to put the thing into standby (display off), then it charges just fine. If you press the power button or a call comes in it wakes up and refuses to charge until it's put back into standby.

The only other time I noticed this was connected to the PC USB port and the device was having trouble maintaining a connection to the PC. I don't know enough about USB protocol stacks but maybe if the phone can't establish a USB data connection, or see activity on the connection, it decides not to go into change mode even if 5V is present on the port, once asleep it may be less thinking and just charge by reflex?

One for the developers I think,

I see the same behavious as well with same phone and a cheap charger I got from Halfords. I turned phone off completely, connected it to charge and then restarted and it seemed to start charging fine.

I have a car charger that charges my Co-Pilot GPS receiver and M3100 at the same time and this works without any problems.

I had a similar problem initially. Discovered that the quality of the usb cable was the problem so now use one which has metal coil and see-though plastic coating. Also, need to plug the charger and usb cable into the PPC BEFORE switching on the PPC otherwise no charge. Hope this may be of some help.

Not sure if this is a similar problem - though I put my Vario2 in the car today for the first time - using one of those cigarette sockets that just have a USB connector on it - then I used my own cable to connect this to the the cigarette socket and the phone. As soon as I plugged it in - my phone died instantly. I couldnt even turn it on using the power button on the side.
I unplugged it and then I soft-reset it - and fortunately it came back to life.
But now after about fifteen - twenty minutes of it being off - I am unable to turn it back on using the power button on the right side of the phone. The only wat to get it to start is to soft-reset it.

Do you think I have done some permanent damage? Do you think if I hard reset it, it will be okay? The thing is that it works fine when it is on - so I hope there is nothing major.
