What do you get when you cross WinCE based device with a Flash based UI? The Synaptics Onyx concept phone thats what!

The Onyx is basically one great, big, high res touch screen. It has no buttons or joysticks, the power of touch is all it needs. It has a few other features too like integrated GPS and Slash Gear have been lucky enough to get the full lowdown on this sexy looking concept...

QUOTE(Slash Gear)
"John walked us through a scenario where the Onyx comes into its own as a true social handset. Equipped with GPS, the cellphone can communicate its position with other Onyx units; as you'll see, this can come in very handy on an organisational level. The dynamic menu means that multiple functions can be combined at any one time: here, a simple call (that can be answered by holding the phone to the cheek) leads to GPS mapping, which is then overlayed with the locations of a group of friends as defined in a calendar entry. Note the incredibly straightforward way that two single calls are combined into a conference call, by dragging one contact onto the other, and contrast that against the convoluted menus and keypresses needed on traditional cellphones."

More pics after the jump...[/teaser]

One thing that's worth noting here is that using WinCE is only a temporary measure. Eventually, this device will use a full flash based engine but my question is this, why can't the current providers of WM devices do something similar. Yes, I know our devices are more about function than form but come on, throw us a friggin bone here!

You can read Slash Gear's full article HERE which also has some nice videos of the device in action.

Just a quick correction: future iterations will not just run on Flash but still Flash on CE (a better Flash Player). WinCE will remain as the core.

you have to remeber, it's still only a concept. That is not the final, production device.

Hmmm...I'm sure when I was writing this, the article said WinCE would be replaced by a Flash engine dry.gif

Anywho, post corrected and welcome to MoDaCo! biggrin.gif

They really need some improvements in touchscreen. Something that doesn't smudge, and is sensitive enough. They put so much dev into cpus, but this is a very important part of it all.

Synaptics got the Onyx on Saturday and was already willing to brief SlashGear on Tuesday. It was a relief (to me) that the team recognized a number of assumptions they'd made were incorrect and will be working towards new solutions. One example is the finger tap locking to drag and drop. Overall, the production model - should kick a$$. We have a couple more clips and a few more images to post later.

For some reason a previous version of the article got posted. Sorry for the confusion.
