I had to hard reset my v1605 yesterday which was continuously crashing and not restarting.

Everything is back to normal bar the new "U" icon which sits where the 3G (or G depending on signal) used to be i.e. on the top menu bar.

Any idea what this means?

Internet and Vodafone Business E-mail seem to be unaffected.

U is the abbreviation for UMTS- the European name for 3G, so they are one & the same thing.

I think there is a fix file somewhere to restore the 3G icon for UK devices.

Strange. I've had the phone for 9 months and it always displayed the 3G (or G) and it's only changed since the reset.

Did you allow the reset to fully complete, including the Extended ROM? (after the main reset, you get a message saying 'Customisation will begin in 5 seconds, then the Ext ROM installs)

The 3G icon is usually within the Ext ROM of UK devices. Maybe you can 'unhide' the Ext ROM and look for the file?

I have noticed that I occasionally have a letter "E" where the "G" normally is. I also used to notice it on my c600. I couldnt specify why or when it appeared.

Im just curious as to whats happenin ?

E stands for Edge, which is a sort of 2.5G and can transfer data at around 100kbps. Currently not universally available across the networks, and usually transmitted from 3G masts.

I've seen over 240kbps on EDGE, depending on handset.

It doesn't require a 3G mast, and was deployed in the UK first by Orange in areas where they did not intend to place a 3G mast, so a software upgrade to the 2G base station (GPRS) allowed EDGE.

Thanks for that smile.gif I was going on what I'd experienced with Orange, though not done any formal speed testing. The theoretical maximum for Edge using all 8 timeslots is 384kbps, but in practice you are unlikely to get more than 2-3 timeslots allocated (the max for GPRS using all 8 slots is 171kbps, but we usually don't get more than 2 timeslots) [Edit- I've just looked at you Wiki link, which has more up to date figures than I was citing smile.gif ]

As for masts- I can definitely only receive Edge signals where there is a 3G signal. (I have a 3G phone, and an Edge phone, both on Orange contracts) but as I tend to only be in one of a few locations it may not be a representative experience!
Reason for edit: Additional comment

I suspect in places where O have the bandwith to the site to support EDGE, they've now installed 3G as well. Wouldn't surprise me :-)

I had for ages a Nokia 9300 which does EDGE, but nothing higher, and my employer gave me a 3G handset to use (temporarily). And in many places I got EDGE on my 9300, but only GPRS on the 3G phone (that didn't support edge, as its not a voice spec). Best thing about edge is usable speed at low power usage.

Although T-mobile don't do EDGE, they have 56k GPRS, instead of Oranges pathetic 28.8.... it was the first thing I noticed after moving over (10yrs with Orange, 1 with T-mob - coverage is less, but data is great at last).
