 Asus Eee White - Just Bought , Few Q's

Hi,

Just bought an asus Eeee in white from Yoysrus in Stoke.

What a machine. Very easy to use and so small. But im wanting to put XP on it.

Few q's...
  1. Can you upgrade the SSD? , if so how?
  2. Is upgrading your memory to 1gb going to void the warranty? , if so would it still void the warranty on other things inside that i havent touched?
  3. How much space will XP take if i do a clean install?
  4. Does XP run significantly slower than linux or is it about the same?
  5. If i bought a 16gb SD card and put it in. Could i have it that it boots off that card instead of the SSD? , if so that would be ideal.
  6. Also, do you know anyone/anywhere i can get a car holder so i can use it in the car as a sat nav and mobile internet device?
  7. FInally, if i stuck with linux , how could i use my 3g phone as a modem device so i could have internet outside with no wires?

Asus has confirmed that replacing the memory in an Eee PC will not void the warranty, contrary to most users beliefs.[19]

Storage can be expanded by using the Secure Digital Card compliant memory card slot located on the right side. SD and SDHC memory cards mount virtually flush into the spring-loaded slot. Removal of the memory card is done by pushing in the card until it clicks and ejects.


Obviously not 100% reliable but looks good!

I got mine from Toys R Us as well, and have since installed XP. I'll try and answer what I can

1) as I understand it, the SSD is not upgradeable but their are people on eeeuser who have added an extra 16GB flash drive in the mini-PCi bay.
2)You do need to remove the warranty sticker to change the RAM, but it is possible to gently remove and replace the sticker if necessary. (and I think under UK law it's debatable whether they can void your statutory rights anyway)
3) XP doesnt take up anymore space than the original software, I have loaded XP Professional, Office Word 2007, Opera, Avast anti-virus, Nokia Data Suite, Windows live and my Canon printer software and I still have 1.2GB free on drive C.
4) Windows XP runs just fine, and I have yet to increase my RAM. Speed isn't an issue with the upgrade.
5) A 16GB card should work fine, I am using a 4GB card without problems and a user at whatmobile is successfully using a 16GB, I think keeping the OS on the SSD is preferable as it is quicker access.
6) no idea
7) connecting to a phone is the main reason I changed, it is extremely difficult and requires in depth knowledge of linux to get it sorted (a bit like messing in DOS) with /commands and just seemed to be too much of a hard job. XP was just so much easier.

Hi guys, few things to watch out for:

1: You can't upgrade the SSD, its soldered directly to the motherboard. As for PCIe expansion, the majority of UK EEE's don't seem to have the socket!
2: I don't think its been confirmed that this won't void your warranty, more mentioned in passing through some website....
3: XP will depend on whether you use something like nLite to rip out stuff you dont want. Remember you'll probably want to assign 256-512MB to pagefile.

5: I have an 8GB no probs, you can boot off of it, but as above it'll probably be a little slower than the SSD.

i have got one of these babys but i cant find a definate answer to one question, the 8gig card you referring to, is it sdhc and if so does the internal reader support sdhc.
