Greetings Everyone...First Time Post Here...
I just upgraded from a V3 Razr to a Q9h...My first smartphone... So I have been reading here for the last few days, and have not come across my issue, but have found a bunch of useful info so far in my looking...Thanks Much... My main issue is: I would like to make the complete switch to my mobile, and cancel my land line/s but before I can do that, I need to be able to use the Q9h as a Fax modem since I run a small A/C business out of my home, and most of my customer billing is done via Fax from Quickbooks Pro.... AT&T tells me I need a "Tethering" package at a cost of between 60 to 85 bucks a month... Not so bad considering I would be saving on the land line costs but here's the deal...The tethering packages that have Internet & text messaging are limited on both (namely a 1500 text limit) and I exceed that every month From what I understand...The Tethering package allows you to setup the phone as a Modem to connect the PC to the Internet...I don't need that since I have high speed cable access... What I'm having a hard time understanding, or accepting is: Jeeze...It's just a phone call as on a land line...To another land line...Why can that not be done ? (I guess it can with the Tethering package) But all I think I need is to get the PC to recognize the Q9h as a phone modem...not a Internet modem Does anyone know of software, driver, or a cab file etc..that can solve my dilemma ? Steve I'm really too tired right now to post your solution but I know how to tether without paying for tethering. I'll post the solution tomorrow.

Hi Jason,
Did I loose you on this ? Long nap I guess...Lol I am able to tether for Internet connection...but still the question is how to use the Q9h as a phone modem for Faxing from the PC... The PC does not see it that way...Or at least that I can tell.. Thanks again....Anyone ? Steve~ |

Humm, I wonder if Jasoninaz is ever going to post the solution he said he was going to post.
It is now March 22nd. 2008, and he posted that he was going to post a solution on Febuary 4th, 2008. So basically, don't hold your breath for the answer..... ehh. *shaking my head in a disappointed manner*

Installed Motorola USB driver (*supplied on cd, or website herehttp://commerce.motorola.com/cgi-bin/ncomm...=1&zipcode= created a Dial up connection through windows (XP sp2) phone number = *99# username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM password: CINGULAR1 Next go to Control Panel> Phone and Modems> click on Motorola USB ... > Properties > Advanced tab > type +CGDCONT=1,"IP","apn_name" (*Replacing apn_name with your APN like WAP.CINGULAR <<NOTICE THE UPPERCASE!) Here is the newest usb drivers January 18, 2008 This USB Driver is used for connecting your Motorola handset to a 32-bit Windows computer via a USB cable. Ok, I went out and purchased a bluetooth dongle for my laptop because I don't like wires. It was about 30 bucks and it rocks. http://us.kensington.com/html/9403.html you tell your phone to accept connections from your laptop and it will use the modem on the phone and expect to get about 320bps and 128 up. And never ever tell AT&T your doing this. I had to show the guys at the ATT store how to do this. Otherwise you will pay for tethering. Now piss off I'm busy

Maybe I'm not understanding you correctly but, I Don't want to use the phone to connect a laptop to the internet as in the tethering package that AT&T offers...

I've never heard of a fax, dude use efax. Its a 100 times easier and you are not going to be able to get a fax transmission over gprs. You are SOL!

As Jason points out you cannot use a cellular phone to connect to an analog fax machine over GPRS. Since your cellular phone is a "digital" device it cannot directly connect to faxes or modems. What you need is a CSD connection. In the past there were cellular providers who would provision a Circuit Switched Data (CSD) connection which basically would emulate an analog connection thereby allowing for a connection between your cellular phone and an analog modem (dial-up networking for example).
I don't know for sure but I suspect ATT has no interest in you getting a CSD connection and may not even have the ability to provision one. I supposed you could call them and ask. I think some sort of online fax service might be the only way for you. |

I may be missing something here.. Now this solution is not Q9H related.. but you'd have to be a bit messed in the head to pay 50+ dollars for a tethering package.. or for equipment to fax.. Since you already stated you have High speed internet.. Why not just sign up for Vonage and get your fax line that way? it's only like 15 bucks a month for a VOIP line..

I'm syncing happily with my XP sp3 laptop using software from ATT motorola CD Questions: 1) Does this setup mean that I already have the necessary USB drivers for this to work or will I need something else? If so, where would I get it? The link in the post is general to the motorola store wanting to sell me something, not a driver download site. 2) What would be the equivalent ATT info for the login info - when I go to the ATT site they only want my phone number, not any sort of username? I am not sure why they are recommending this method. The easiest thing to do is to use ActiveSync Tools>Explore Smartphone and make a shortcut to the IntShrUI.exe program that is in your windows directory. Put the shortcut in the windows/start menu folder. Hold the control key down and drag and drop from the windows folder to create the shortcut.
IntShrUI only works via USB. Not Bluetooth. There are some drop down menu's you will see there, but you can only select USB. Hit Connect (left soft key) while docked. Viola! Your laptop will now have a Lan connection. Nothing to download. And I believe you can have a voice connection at the same time. The dialup method does not allow simultaneous voice. One warning. Using IntShrUI must change something in the registry or something because I cannot use the dialup method mentioned above anymore. -------------------- Visit damon4.com, The most exciting place on the internet!
