We did have 0-60 before, but there was some question over whether GPS was accurate enough...

Might be worth incorporating that, as it would gain the audience of the car modding and track day people.
I agree with the concerns about accuracy. Perhaps investigate if those sorts of timings can be made and recorded. I guess the question about accuracy is dependant upon how good a fix you have. I.e. when you are in TomTom, sometimes it "jitters", and shows you as travelling without moving. I know that on average a GPS can have you as about 3 metres out. So this would mean a total of 6 metres difference, but im not sure that every reading would fluctuate from each extreme opposite. I read a very detailed thread about how accurate satellite positioning and speed monitoring could be deemed to be. I know it's far more accurate when you are running a constant speed, as you are not accelerating and subject to the sampling rate of the gps. -------------------- --

Remember that in general you get 1 speed reading per second from the GPS.
So your pattern might be something like (over x seconds): 0 1.6 15.4 25.2 40.5 55.8 67.3 So how would you calculate 0-60? Clearly between reading 1 and 2 the vehicle started, and between readings 6 and 7 the vehicle hit 60, but a truly reliable method of determining a time would be difficult. I'm writing a Windows mobile app to do just this. My plan is to use polynomial curve-fitting to determine the time at the speed to be measured. My app will also measure other acceleration increments and lap-times.

My app will also measure other acceleration increments and lap-times. What happens when your flux capacitor kicks in and you leave two flaming stripes down the road? Sorry couldn't resist the back to the future reference! I think that method of polynomial curves to work out the best fit, would be the best option based on the sampling times, and speed at that time. This is assuming that the vehicle doesn't have a huge boost of power at certain revs etc. (Like Paul's Mazda 6 -------------------- --

As an addition, it would be good if the app could be developed to do this kind of measurement, because it increases the audience for the application ... or a new application.
Could quite easily get the device into a car, with someone at a race meeting or trackday and compare the results to the official timing results. I know the ethos of CamerAware is "safe driving and maintaining your license" rather than encouraging people to thrash their car for 0-60, max speed etc timings ... but I still think it would be a worthwhile app. -------------------- --

Although 0-60, 0-100, 1/4 mile etc would be great I don't think you will be able to get the accuracy since the GPS sampling time is so slow. The polynomial is a good idea to make it more accurate but how does it know exactly when you moved. In car's that are doing 10sec+ 0-60's which have a fairly linear power delivery it probably won't be too bad but put it into anything sub 4 sec 0-60's, 4wd and turbo lag and it's really going to struggle to keep up. My old Roadpilot GPS (updated every 1 second) would be lagging behind 30-40mph at the end of the 1/4 mile (in 11.1s) so read about 90mph instead of 125mph and even when approaching 180mph it was still about 5mph behind.
However I hope i'm totally wrong about the accuracy as it would be a great addition to the arsenal of performance measuring gadgets |

If our PDA / phones had an accelerometer in them, I could see adding that. GPS is far too slow for accurate timing like that. When we drag race my Dad's older 85 Corvette, whilst heavily modified and runs in the mid 11's, we're still using the stock computer. (different prom) You can imagine what car computer technology was like back in the 80's... SLOW. We get a whole 9 updates on the sensor reads durning a 1/4 mile run. The only way we can get away with the camshaft and heads on that car, is the computer is too stupid and slow to chase the hunting. Thank god for open loop!

Yeah, if you were just relying on GPS raw data it would be pretty useless. Dunno about poly wotsit curves but you could just plot the raw data and extraplolate to approximate. 0mph could be approximated as easily as 62/100mph etc. GCSE maths level I think.
Matt Mind you just getting basic cameraware to run on my Trinity seems impossible so that might have to be sorted first! |

Just as an aside, don't ever mention to your insurance company that you have any sort of system for measuring 0-60 or 1/4 miles as it would invalidate your insurance if they thought you were testing on the public highway... or even on private ground.
For example you are normally insured to drive your car round silverstone as fast as you like, as long as no one times your lap. -------------------- HTC Diamond running Dutty's V1.6 rom.

Although I can see the UK Police cracking down on TomTom devices soon too, and making them illegal as a distraction to the driver.
