 changing text input method?

I have been searching modaco and the web fr 30 mins now looking for either a manual for e650 or s710, or instructions on how to change the text input method preference so that each time i start typing it defaults to ABC ad no t9.

I have just hard reset my phone and now cannot find the setting to do this!

can someone point me in the right direction please?

unfortunately I dont have that option. I forgot to specify it is an Orange e650...
