 Sync Error

Device(s): HTC Touch
Every time I try to sync my Touch to my PC (XP) I get the following message:

WCESMgr.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialise properly (0xc0000005). Click OK to terminate the program.

The logo in the taskbar goes green, I can see the device in Windows and I can transfer files back and forth.
But I can't get into Activesync at all - even when the device is disconnected and I try to run the program I get the same message.
I've uninstalled, restarted, updated to Activesync 4.5 and reinstalled several times but get the same result.

The troubleshooter doesn't seem to cover it, does anyone know how to go about fixing this?
