Device(s): SGH-i900

Hi All,
I've just purchased the 16GB i900 phone but I can't get XP to recognise it. When I connect the USB cable, XP does come up with SGH-i900 (as a bubble from the taskbar) but then it prompts me to install the drivers. I can't find any drivers listed on the CD and I thought that the activesync installation included the USB drivers.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled activesync numerous times and rebooted between each uninstall/install just incase. I changed the USB connection to be My Storage rather than Activesync to see if this would prompt a different response (ie USB Mass Storage device detected) but it still comes up with the SGH-i900 bubble and prompts for driver installation. I've also unticked the box on the USB to PC connection setup but that didn't help either.

- The PDA version is i900XXHG5/MSGH1
- The phone version is i900XXHG5
- It was unlocked on the Orange network.

Other things to note and things I've fiddled with :
- The laptop has got internet sharing enabled.
- The laptop NIC was disabled and I re-enabled it.
- I've disabled the firewall but it made no difference.
- Activesync confirms that it can find the USB port active and Com3 is active (but Com3 is the builtin laptop modem).
- I've tried installing the Activesync msi from the Samsung Singapore website but it made no difference.
- I've tried connecting the USB cable into all 3 ports on the laptop but i get prompted for the driver installation on all of them.
- I had a previous version of Activesync v3.8 installed before I installed v4.5 over the top.

Anyone suffered the same problem or able to offer any advice? Thanks in advance!

Weirdness!

Out of interest, try installing this and then see if it still prompts you for drivers...

Hi Paul,
Yep, I tried that too. Still get prompted for the driver install.
It's so annoying because I want to load it up with music and get my phone numbers into my contacts but can't sad.gif

So weird... when you switch it to Mass Storage mode the drivers should just be built in!

I would be tempted to try a hard reset I think...

Well, that's what I thought too... I would have expected the drivers to be on the storage itself and for them to auto install but that wasn't the case...

Alas, I've also tried the hard reset of the Phone/PDA and that didn't help either :-(

I didn't reset the storage simply because it has some photos on there that I haven't been able to transfer (but I could attempt copy over wifi to my NAS device I suppose).

Can you switch the USB-to-pc connection advanced option off, in settings, connections?

Yep, I've unticked the "enable advanced network functionality" on the USB to PC setting and that made no difference unfortunately...

Device(s): Samsung Omnia 8GB

I had this a lot with my iPod Touch and iTunes, to fix this I used too..

1)
Using windows device manager, un-install/remove all USB devices and controllers
With the iPOD/Phone connected, rescan for new hardware

If that fails,
2)
Disconnect the iPOD/Phone
Load up windows device/hardware manager
There is an menu option to show hidden devices (sorry i cant remember top off my head where)
You should see more devices, with little red or yellow exclamation marks on them
Remove any "Unknown" devices
Remove any that seem related to the phone
Rescan for new hardware
Reconnect the phone and windows should install as normal

So far its only happened once on my Omnia, and option 1 sorted it out. It also only happens on my HP laptop.

Thanks Shin007.

I have noticed the SGH-i900 appear in Device Manager with a question mark but it only remains whilst the driver install step is occuring. I have attempted to uninstall it at this stage but that didn't help and to be honest I think it was really trying to uninstall a device which hadn't yet been installed... if you know what I mean.

I haven't tried removing all the USB devices (including the hidden ones) so I'll try that tonight when i get home and then revert.

This has worked for me in the past.
The problem is caused by half the drivers been installed

Apologies if this is off message.

I have been having exactly the same issues with my zen vision m and Vista. when you connect the USB it attempt to install the drivers but then comes and says device "cannot be started code 10" there seems to be quite a lot of issues with drivers and XP and Vista. I am currently the owner of a very expensive paperweight that cannot be seen by my PC. Both microsoft.com and anythingbutipod.com seem to have come up with loads of suggestions along your lines and some people have succeeded but as yet I have not.
cheers
Kieron

Okay, problem solved.

I removed all the USB drivers by uninstalling them from within Device Manager but then when I scanned for new hardware it found the USB controllers but prompted me for installation of the drivers... so I looked harder for the "inf" folder and found it at c:\windows\inf (I prior thought it was in c:\windows\system32\inf but couldn't find it there!) and each of the 4 USB controllers then successfully installed.

then I was still prompted to install drivers for the Omnia but again pointed the install at c:\windows\inf and low and behold... xp installed and activesync kicked into life.

Very happy Omnia owner.

Now... maybe I should phone Samsung technical support and educate them as they weren't able to solve the problem huh.gif (but at least the Tech Support guy did call me back the same day and even called me at 7pm so that was quite impressive)

My mouse and keyboard are both connected via usb, i have tried the above method but when it comes to uninstalling the "USB Root HUB" My mouse and keyboard stop working and i need to restart my pc to get them working again. I am having the same problems as golfgti.man but i don't fully understand how to fix it.

Thanks, Chris
