 autodisconect once mail is collected or idle?

i have my smartphone setup to sync to my imap server once every 2 hours, but what i want is for the device to then disconect from the dial up isp right after (verizon quick connect) it is done collecting the mail, or at least if there is an idle time of a minute or preferably less..

any way to do this? any workaround? i don't want to eat up too many minutes.

When using data you are normally charged for the actual data you use and not the time connected.

It may also be worth looking at this little app Paul created.
