i found these instructions on this site that is supposed to be the upcoming 6.1 update

can anyone tell me if this method of reset is the same as the turn off phone, hold up while turning phone back on method? this second method sounds like it erases more somehow.

"After the download has completed, it is recommended that the user perform a command line reset. This is to ensure the EFS area is purged of all irrelevant data.

  1. Once the handset has rebooted to the Today Screen, enter the following code: *2767*3855#. The handset should display a message “Formatting- Please wait a moment”.
  2. The phone will reboot after the Full Reset as this is normal operation."

I'm not entirely sure on this, but I would say they both do the same thing. The fact they both state "Formatting - Please wait a moment" is probably the indicator, but it is possible.

It really couldn't hurt to do what Samsung instructs, but in the end, I think they just say this way because if they tell people "Press the up button while turning the phone on" some people just won't get it. This is more clear cut for the majority of users.
