I waited a long time for AT&T to release the Omnia, until I heard some crazy rumors and bought an import instead. Looks like those rumors weren't so crazy;
Here's the story And here's another Seems the i910 will be the CDMA version of the Omnia for Verizon, and the i907 will be AT&T's version of the i780 (coincidentally also known as the Mirage in some overseas markets). No Omnia for AT&T? I remember reading HERE that the i900 was also submitted for FCC testing, and prior to the i907 and i910. If Samsung are in fact using the i900 model number for a US Omnia, this does suggest that UMTS bands are dependent on firmware alone. I know this wasn't the case for HTC's Touch Diamond (which also uses the Qualcomm RTR6285 chip), but they distinguished the two versions with different model numbers. Whether Samsung will actually release a US Omnia (or even a US ROM) is another story. I presume that shady dealings are taking place between Apple and AT&T, and Samsung does not want to release the Omnia without AT&T's support & subsidy. I'm hoping my Omnia is just a ROM away from 3G on 850/1900MHz, but at this rate how far is that gonna be? This post has been edited by jakeordie: Sep 25 2008, 23:07 |

I heard the same (Mirage to come to AT&T)...it's a shame that the U.S. is last on Earth in Cell Phone Technology.
Personally, I'm liking my Omnia more and more each day. I can't imagine the Mirage being better than Omnia. |

I can't imagine the Mirage being better than Omnia. thats a shame. look at all those crappy cell phones that we have here. although, there is nothing about technology, we have the most advanced technology on earth, the thing is that those companies dont wanna us to have those great cell phones, why? coz if they do, they'll make less $$$ than selling us crappy ones. its all about profits. just look at Sprint's Instinct, its a down version of samsung F480, and they are asking $200 with 2 yrs contract!!!!!!! good news is that Sprint just started taking orders of HTC touch diamond, but still, a down grade version. Here's the update;
Engadget Rumour is the i907 will be renamed "Epix" (which I hope is a tongue-in-cheek reference to AT&T's EPIC FAILURE to carry the Omnia). Here's where it gets EVEN WEIRDER: Samsung just submitted the "i900L" to the FCC for testing. So what's the problem with the FCC approving the "i900" that was submitted five months ago? Here are the FCC pages; i900 i900L Can someone who understands the terminology take a look at where it says "Tx Frequency" and explain WTF is going on here? I do not know what is going on, but that FCC filing says that the device supports 850/1900 HSDPA at the very least (HSUPA I am not sure about).
I wonder why they only tested the dual gsm bands, I assumed that the I900L would be at last a GSM world phone. Anyway, I have yet to see any differences in the hardware between the two devices but that is only from the documents specified. The antennae and radio hardware seem to be the same. |

See here's my theory (and I know I'm not alone in hoping for this one);
Not only is the i900L being tested by the FCC, it is being released in South America. Here's the link and click on the arrow to the right of "Plataforma". Now, if the i900L is 850/1900 3G for the FCC and 2100 3G for South America, then there's another piece of evidence suggesting that the 3G bands are not hardware dependent. Maybe I'm wrong in assuming that AT&T is holding back the Omnia. Maybe there's bureaucracy surrounding the importation of a truly "World" phone. The fact that Samsung has made two FCC submissions for what outwardly seems to be the same piece of hardware (and produced a truly mind-boggling assortment of model numbers in the process) suggests the possibility. |
