Wow this works *really* well.
It's made by Agilent technogies and is a 500kb .cab file that has pre-defined codes for Panasonic, Philips, Sony and Samsung Tv's, DVD, Video's, and Audio. Audio what?, it doesn't say but I assume mini systems. Range is at least 8 or 9 *metres* using it with my sony TV even though the i300 battery is nearly flat. Wow. Compared to most smartphones running remote software this is AMAZING. Richard

Right, the philips codes are standard RC5, so anything that uses these can be controlled natively eg my Marantz CD player, Arcam DVD player, Cyrus Amplifier. Only basic transport controls for the CD / DVD but still useful. Not all functions work eg the power buttons. But there's a remote learning function accessed by pressing a key with no label! Yay!
" Learn Key Wizard. To learn a key, i) Align your remote control to IR port in your phone ii) Select the 'Start' menu. iii) Press the key on your remote control you want to learn (Press only once, DO NOT HOLD). Fluffcat1, can you confirm though that this works due to different ir hardware in the Samsung compared with all the other Smartphones? Just that for so long now it's been taken as gospel that the SPV range's IR hardware wasn't appropriate for use as a remote control. Would be nice if this does prove to be incorrect.
But I'm not holding my breath! |

Just that for so long now it's been taken as gospel that the SPV range's IR hardware wasn't appropriate for use as a remote control. Would be nice if this does prove to be incorrect. But I'm not holding my breath! Must be different IR hardware - tried some un-scientific tests with a remote control tester( £4.99 from CPC ) and a Sony videocamera (pulses with IR) and the samsung has a helluva range compared to HTC stuff. Learning function works well too, although cyclic codes can't be programmed eg my Arcam DV88 'menu 'button pulses 2 different codes in a cycle and this is too difficult for the i300. Pronto esq remotes also suffer this and the solution for those is a download patch, but as this is a value-added side feature of the i300 can't see any updates being done. Also installed the app on other QVGA devices - a c550 and an sp5. Although it installs ok, gives a 'WPSM error' or 'driver not loaded' and no ir output when buttons pressed. Understandable as the screen displays the i300's keypad with functions mapped over it so it is deviuce specific, but pressing various keys on the other phones do make the displayed buttons illuminate so it isn't a button mapping issue. QUOTE(fluffcat1 @ Jan 12 2006, 10:38) And some! Seems the underlying technology has changed recently to enable low cost, low power, high range units to be embedded into phones / pda's. Agilent, who supply the software with the samsung, also design and make the hardware. http://news.thomasnet.com/fullstory/461929/264 "Agilent Technologies Introduces Industry’s Smallest, Lowest-Power Infrared Transceiver for Universal Remote Control via Mobile Phone Transceiver’s 1.6mm Ultra-Low-Profile Package and 1.8-V Logic Input/Output Interface Enable Slimmer, Compact Mobile Devices PALO ALTO, Calif., March 14, 2005 -- Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today introduced the industry’s smallest, lowest-power infrared (IR) transceiver that enables mobile phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs) to function as universal IR remote controls for televisions, VCRs, DVDs and other home appliances. The new transceiver offers a remote control distance of up to 7 meters (approximately 23 feet) with an IrDA (Infrared Data Association) link distance of up to 50 cm (approximately 20 inches) and compatibility with Agilent’s universal remote control software." Speed is upto 4 mb/s so fairly reasonable, IRDA certified link range is 50cm so laptop links should be better. Maybe IrDA has a new lease of life? an off-the-peg solution from one manufacturer of componants for approx $2USD in 'moderate volume' - how long before it spreads to other devices? From reading their product spec the actual control software can also be embedded within the emitter so that 'dumber' devices can also play too http://www.avagotech.com/products/parametr...licationId=5267 Come on HTC, catch up! I second that motion! Come on HTC, why can't the SPV/SDA range incorporate this technology?

QUOTE(Pondrew @ Jan 14 2006, 18:20) Perhaps they can I've ordered some engineering samples to test-bodge onto various HTC boards I have spare. If I've read the specs of (some of) them correctly, they are higher power direct replacements as they use standard IrDA control codes If it works and they ring me up and ask me to buy 1000 units anybody interested in a group buy? Have you had any luck yet mate? If you dont get any luck maybe you could try maplins or RS who might be able to get these things. Either that or search the web for a part number that might sell them in lower batches. Id certainly have a few from you if you get them working!

Phill Agilent are their own distributer, these are designed for OEM/ODM's so I've emailed to ask for a development kit sample but so far no response :-( I've tried the usual suspects in Taipei for a source as well and nothing so far. I think they're a bit too new / specialist for the likes of Farnell (R.S) and defo not maplin's thing, but I'll keep you informed. I've managed to source XDA dock connections in small volumes so am fairly hopeful. QUOTE(Tech @ Jan 22 2006, 14:57) These are new technology - some of the emitters available actually have the code firmware built in, and they all have a much longer range, I don't think it's something that can be achieved using software as the output of the IR emitters in HTC equipment is currently too low. The plan is to swop these newer emitters with higher power onto an existing HTC board - assuming the output / control format /voltage is compatible. I think we may well see these on future HTC products, but a retro-fit option would be cool too :-) Richard -------------------- '....It's been out in Japan nearly 3 weeks - where's yours?'

Tried samsung customer services? Won't run on any other device. You shouldn't ask for downloads of copyrighted software on the forum. Maybe try the shop where you got it? QUOTE(mini_man @ Jan 24 2006, 23:15) I doubt it - I think it's designed to work in conjunction with agilent's new range of IR emitters that have a longer range than those used in HTC devices ( see links above). From info on the agilent site some emitters have basic codes actually built into firmware, so without opening the samsung up as yet I don't know what emitter is actually there and therefore what / how this app works.
