Check the cable for damage.
While the wall charger works ok you could still have the other pins damaged in the socket.
The wall charger uses the two outside pins but Activesync etc will use the middle three pins as well.
The pins are labeled 1,2,3,X & 4 the two outer pins 1&4 are +5v and Ground pin 2 & 3 are duplex data. Pin X is normally used on mobile devices as an indicator to the pc that the device is present, shorted to GND with a resistor.

I think you're describing mini USB.The i617 uses a porpriatory samsung edge connector with lots of pins. The four (two far left, two far right) pins are used by the power supply, the USB cable I don't have to hand so can't say.

UPDATE: i tryed a new cable, on a different computer, and it still doesnt work, so i have declared that it is something with the phone. iether a prong in the connector? or it was coincidence and something software just happened to go wrong.

any suggestions for me at this point, besides using an adapter for the microsd card?

Yep sorry completely forgot what connector the Samsung uses, sorry for any confusion. I've been working on mini USB on my JasJar.

The only thing to initially is to look at the connector under a magnifying glass or microscope if you know someone who may have one.
After that then it's time to take the phone apart to investigate further.

If the phone is still under warranty you could try asking for a replacement?

i bought the phone from a local guy on craigslist , so i have no idea, he said it was his bussiness phone and was only used for about 4 months.

im on hold with att now to see if im eligible for a replacement.

if im not, is there any other options, like 3rd party repair solutions that are trustworth and good?

You could try a Samsung repair center in your location.
Google will proably be the best bet (apart from its only giving me Samsung UK pages here.

Good result. Maybe buy yourself a new USB cable or at least check the old one carefully though. If you have broken off pins or the plastic guide plate for them they may have jammed/bent the connector in the cable. You won't get a second accidental damage replacement from AT&T although I would assume their replacement know has a warranty on it :-)
