I'm sure there are many ways people have found to free up precious memory on your phone. One post I found talks of replacing unused system files with copies of empty text files. (I have not tried this yet).

I'd be interested in hearing other ways to free up memory on the phone.

Here's a real simple one ...

Copy the SP5.bmp file from the "\Windows" directory of your phone to your PC. Then, use your favorite image editor to reduce the color depth to 16 colors (choose 'closest match' not 'dither' and don't require the default windows colors) - you will reduce the file from about 330K to less than 40K. Now copy the file back to the "\Windows" direcory.

(Note: requires the phone to be app unlocked).

well you can transfer your e mails to your sd card, or your sounds in application data/home to your storage card (i use special wav and mp3 sounds with ToneSetter, not thoses ones !)
or just update your rom to an imate one, which will lets you with 13MO left on the 18. (i mean 13MO available for your personnal use, even if i think you 'd better use a sd card...)

You can also try clearing the cache from Internet Explorer

I hope we can accumulate all the available ways to save on board memory..

1) Way to change default PIE cache directory to somewhere in mini SD
2) Way to change default store directory of e-mails to mini SD
3) Same for the pictures and videos (default directory in SD instead of My Pictures)
4) Being able to assign ringtones directly from SD without any modification
5) Set the "Contacts" in SD

1) Way to change default PIE cache directory to somewhere in mini SD
---Storing temporary internet files in IE hogs up precious memory on the phone. Here's how I avoid losing my memory to temporary internet files (since I do a lot of browsing).

HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Shell Folders

Values -> Cache
Change value data to point to your Storage Card (if you have enough space, else edit your cache size limit). -Credit geos to chrisc28

##########################

2) Way to change default store directory of e-mails to mini SD
---Create the folders on your Storage Card '\Storage Card\Inbox' and the subfolder '\Attachments'
Import the registry keys as below. (try Registry Workshop and you can connect to Mobile device registries from your PC and import reg files. This saves having a Registry editor installed on the phone and typing on the device). If you are entering these keys manually rather than importing a *.reg file only use single slashes for the paths. Restart your device after doing this.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MAPI]
"AttachPath"="\\Storage Card\\Inbox\\Attachments"
"PropertyPath"="\\Storage Card\\Inbox"

This not only puts email attachments onto your storage card but puts all the *.mpb files which make up items in your Inbox onto the storage card too. Credit goes to wired&connected.

##########################

3) Same for the pictures and videos (default directory in SD instead of My Pictures)
---When you first put a MiniSD to the SDA/WM5 it will recognise and next time you start the Camera appliction, it will ask you if you want to change default directory to under Removable Storage card, just say Yes. Or you can do it from the options of camera program as well.

##########################

4) Being able to assign ringtones directly from SD without any modification
---Drop them (*.mp3) into the root of the storage card, and remember you can downsample them using any mp3 editor/converter.

##########################

5) Set the "Contacts" in SD
---Pending

Thanks a lot! It is a cool one. I was previously looking for ways to move this file to SD but your solution rocks

Those who are wary of editing the registry can get some cool software to do the job from the Fairdeal.MoDaCo shop smile.gif

SmartTweaker

I can install anything on my 8310, but I cannot delete files in the windows folder.
I'd like to get rid of all the un-English language files/options in there, but can't find a way to delete them.

OK - found that my phone wasn't app unlocked, as I was told when I bought it.

So the question now is....Is there a problem deleteing all the foreign language files in the Windows folder (there's over a dozen full size versions of various apps, apparently in different languages)?
cheers,

If these foreign language files are not part of windows as being burned into the ROM. Just associations or the full size versions, goto the properties of each file, un-check mark all the checks in attributes(especially archive) and then you should be able to delete them from the file menu.

I use this method every so often for the log.txt file in \windows\activesync\. If you connect and upload/download files between comp and phone alot, the .txt file will get big and take up phone memory.
Hope for the best!

Wouldnt it just be nice if HTC could add 20 mb of memory so we could scrap all of these tweaks and not running the risk of messing up the config...

Yeah, like a phone defrag application, though these devices are so sensitive internally I would be afraid of fragging the phone up itself!

I would try to app unlock it and then go and manually remove the rubbish. Have you tried a registry editor yet?

I have app unlocked it, so now I can change registry entries, but for some reason file attributes in the windows folder are greyed-out.

My understanding is that the Windows folder gets re-written every time you boot up the phone. Therefore anything you manage to delete will only reappear. Whether the file replacement method mentioned above works I couldn't say.

ok here is a question do you think all these phones have been released with a major fault let me explain.

when buying a qtek 8310 the blurb reads...64MB rom and 64 MB of ram

the mpx 220 states 64mb and 32 mb

but i can get all my applications on my mpx 220 and have bags of space left i cant with my qtek

now when you install a memory reader to both phones the mpx is showing a flash memory for storage on the phone yet none exist for the qtek

is this a case of backwards thinking for thenext gen of smartphone or is it simply a reg edit thats gone astray preventing the install of applets to the corect partition

you see when I use a memory reader on the qtek it reads as follows

Attached File  Qtek.jpg ( 19.08K ) Number of downloads: 21

but the mpx shows

Attached File  Mpx220.jpg ( 18.02K ) Number of downloads: 18

is there not something missing from the qtek ????

I think it would be better if we can even disable the internet explorer cache.
I have got wifi at home so the cache is useless to me. When I open colourful pages, PIE takes some time to write all its things in the cache (often freezing PIE and the phone). It would be faster to load all the images from the internet than to store&retrive them from the cache.

Take opera as an example.... opera doesn't do cache but its twice as fast as PIE at opening every page.
