Should I get one?

Ok, I've spent the best part of 4 hours researching this phone, watched all the animations, seen all the add-ons and gizmos it comes with, read through every topic on this forum and feel this could well be the phone for me. I only use an ageing Siemens C35 at the moment, I don't use the WAP on it, as it is too slow and cumbersome, there is no email facility, and certainly no way of taking or sending pictures!

To have a phone that would give me always on internet would be so cool, I use the pc a lot at home, broadband from day 1 nearly, and have a number of contacts in MS messenger, I use email all the time from home, and surf the web all the time. I am a keen photographer, but haven't yet bought a fully fledged digital still camera, but do have a Sony DV camera for video work.

So, can I take a pic with the SPV, and send it via email to my own or other email address? Is the messenger service always on as soon as you turn on in the morning? Can you hide your status as you can on a pc?

Can my wife send me an email from the home pc to me at my mobile, is that just a case of me collecting my email as normal, but using the phone to do it instead of the pc? ( I know I can have the server at BT keep a copy of the message )

On the Office side of things, I was about to buy the new Sony PDA, the cheap one, for simple tasks like contact management, tasks and to do list, which I have started to also do on my pc via OUTLOOK. Will the SPV be able to uplug from its cradle, and have that info with it automatically syncronised every night?

There was one post saying about checking email automatically after a set time, say every 30 minutes, is this possible?

Sorry for all the questions, but buying this could save me from paying through the nose for a PDA and a new phone, and is a great price.

I have just taken up a new post in management at work, hence the need for some real data organisation, so it will be useful, and not just a toy.

Finally, as I have never had a phone on contract before, and was looking at the cheapest option, which is the TALK 30 PLAN, I presume I get 30 minutes of free calls a month, then have to pay the advertised tariff for everything after that. And also it costs £6 a month for up to 10mb of data via GPRS, yes?

I am still trying to justify the £15 + £6 it will cost me every month.

Thanks for your help, and I hope with your advice I will become an owner as well as a poster,

chris.

A few things to note

- the £6 promo GPRS deal only lasts until the end of april.

- the SPV wont run any old smartphone programs only ORANGE signed ones which I find to be its major downfall

- test before you buy, the phone call quality isnt great and you might not get on with it

still its a nice phone, but im not sure if I like it or loath it yet :D

well

1. the phone keeps stalling

2. ( and you may have to wait forever for an application to open)

3. when you take a picture you need to stay still for about 5 seconds before the picture is actually taken

4. modem doens't work that well

5. web browser it's almost too painful to use

6. active sync: love it or leave it.

7. email supports only one account and if u synchronise you may lose the emails from your pop account if u r not careful

8. it's dual band

9. MS sux

10. it's not that easy to transfer data accross to the phone (pics, video, music ringtones) and expect the phone to find them anywhere

11. orange signature for software

enough?

With all those reasons :

- Who was the person that bought your phone ?

- What have you done to that person for it ?

Some advice :

The person that bought your phone ... slap him/her hard ... very hard ... because a person that is that stupid and buys a phone that is that bad using an MS Operating System that sux that bad.... well that person does not deserve to buy another Smartphone for a couple of years to come. That person should sell your phone back to the dealer and buy you some plain old cell.

Additionally if that person also organized you your version of MS XP/2000/ME/98 at home ... MS sux as you say yourself ... tell that person to get a life and get you your first ever Linux version so you got something to do over the next couple of weeks (installing and securing it). Time that is spent a lot better than having to hang around in the SPV forums with us SPV users who actually use the phone properly.

cw42 be mindful of the battery life of this phone. A maximum life of 3 days in standby but more like one and a half days in real life. Make a couple of calls and/or GPRS use and take that time down even more

Another pain, for me at least, is that the alarm does not sound unless the phone is switched on.

It is a fantastic phone though but the battery life is a MAJOR problem IMO.

i already use linux which gives me much more satisfaction

had to use MS windows at work otherwise i would gladly forget about it

never bought the phone and not planning to

friend of mine had it.

there are better working phone out at the moment. i'm also quite happy to keep using my crappy one, simply because i dont need to use MSN when i'm at the out with my friends

the spv to become a proper phone needs at least

more processing power

more freedom (with applications)

an OS without so many bugs

Any phone with java, just look at what you can download in the way of software.

Someone I know has 35megs of sw for the Nokia 7650 (symbian os based I think?) which includes games like moto gp.

Unless orange stop the 'needs to be orange signed rubbish' this is a very crippled phone.

If youve never had one and just played around with it then yes you proberbly do think their crap.

If you own one now thats a different story you begin to love your SPV as posted elsewhere you either love it or hate it buy one by all means and remember you have the 14 day return policy on it, after this time you should know if your going to get along with it.

This is a good start to a phone and all Microsoft products are buggy at first, look at XP the first day of release a critical update came out.

Thing is this is a test so to speak for Microsoft they wont want to mess it up so early on so they will fix the problems with or without Oranges help.

Most of the problems can be solved with a simple update, just look at it like that most of the problems will be solved eventually I know the battery life is high up on the list, a big possiblity that this will be fixed in the very first update.

The digital signitures to be honest I can see going eventualy they will want programmers to programe for their SPV they may decide to charge people though to get things ceritified if they dont get rid of them.

Why I think they will get rid of them is because this phone at the end of the day is aimed at business users, most of them IT people so they will have programmers to create company specific programs, if they cant but them on the phone Orange will lose out in the end.

This is just my opion, then again I could be all wrong

Ok, it isn't perfect

(battery life is poor, digital sigs, some core software you have to buy as extras)

But look at what you get: a gorgeous colour screen, mp3 player, video player (some people have compressed entire films to play on their spvs), takes SD/mmc cards (as oposed to the p800 which only takes expensive small memory stick DUOs), its got a camera, some very nice software available, and (if you unlock your phone) gameboy +doom! It syncs you contacts and tasks with your PC, it can browse the full internet... for the money you really couldn't ask for alot more.

I love my spv, but not everyone agrees with me.

The choice is yours.

Just to add another positive reply. I am also perfectly happy with my SPV. It check's my e-mail and plays mp3's. I can use html web surfing when i need to (won't be in april tohugh ;)), and for the momeny you get so much stuff in the box it's worth the price you pay.

If you like toys, get it. Despite some peoples problems i've not had any trouble making or recieving phonecalls.Just to add another positive reply. I am also perfectly happy with my SPV. Exactly Gor the fact you get an MP3 player alone was enough to make my mind up. You see all these features on phones and think if only they did one with everything on well here it is.

For the price you will not get a better phone on the market
