i300 crashing

Hi, first post - be gentle...

I've had two i300's in the space of a month from O2 (in the UK). I asked for a replacement because the first kept crashing on startup (I got an 'out of memory' message).

The second one is exactly the same :)

The startup message in full:

alert

Your phone is running low on free storage space. Delete old or unused items to create more space.

Unfortunately, I can't - the left soft-button is an 'Unlock' button, but it doesn't do anything (apart from go 'pock' when you press it).

The only way to get my phone working properly again is to hard reset it :D

Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how did you fix it?

Cheers,

Doug.

This problem seems to occur on certain Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition Smartphone devices. It happened repeatedly to me on a Voq Professional Phone and is mentioned as occuring on the i300 here.

Have a read of the thread linked to above although I'm afraid I don't think any solution as such was discovered. If it keeps happening maybe ask to replace the device again or swap it for an equivalent...

Thanks for that, I thought I was alone - or at least that's how O2 have made me feel...

I was in the exact same situation until a few days ago. The 'tech' dept at Samsung themselves never even mentioned a hard reset to me. My replacement handset did the exact same within 36 hours. I have held back with filling the HDD more that 5/6 full and it seems ok, but that kind of defeats the point.. I would love for there to be some sort of software upgrade that fixes this issue.

I have had the exact same problems with the 'alert your phone is running low on free storage space. Delete old or unused items to create more space.' and 'INFO SMS storage is full'. I have had these errors on on three different i300's.

I have called Samsung and O2 and both have been useless, they don't even know about the problem. Or atleast that is what they are saying. In the end I sent it all back and have given up on this phone.

Samsung wanted me to send the phone back to them for repair but I didnt bother doing this. Call me cynical but all they would do is perform a hard reset and then say its working, send it back to me and then charge me for sending a device which is 'not faulty'. Well who knows maybe they would have done something but I aint sending my brand new phone for a repair!

So three Samsung I300's and same errors on all, how mint!

Shame really as I thought it was fantastic otherwise. It sounds like a OS problem to me, I cant see how filling the HD could cause this as I had 600Mb free everytime these errors came about. Even if it was the HD its stupid not being able to fill your 3GB HD with music. I also never installed any apps, so the only phone memory being used was for contacts, couple of sms, settings.

My advise to everyone is to steer clear of this phone unless Samsung release a fix. Unless you fancy leaving your phone switched on permanently, as the error only seems to appear intermittantly when you switch it off and then turn it back on again.

I mean imagine the thing crashing while your out and about to meet whoever and then you turn it back on, get the error, have to do a hard reset, and then you find out you have lost all your contacts.

I find it hard to believe that a company like Samsung could release something as major as this but not test it thoroughly enough to find this error. Or maybe they did and released it anyway so they could say they have the first HD smartphone on the market!

Hiya,

2 questions:

first, whats the most you've managed to get on your HDD WITHOUT getting the error, 'disk space full' and then having to do a Hard Reset. I would like to know and it would be intresting to see if everyone has the same limit. The error only seems to happen when i swap the battuey.

I've had 150meg spare on the HDD and it crashed. Now i've got 83% free space and i don't want to overfill it.

secondly, can we expect a ROM update for this phone, either from o2 or from Samsung.

Cheers

interesting

wait for the i310 - will have WM5 and twice the size of HDD

however for this issue, as many people have said, perform a hard reset and if it still does it - there is a faulty batch from O2 ;)

I just thought i'd add that I found this thread and wondered how to do a hard reset as my phone had crashed (the battery was low and I only had 300mb left on the drive, so that kinda fell in with other peoples symptoms).

Hard Reset = Turn the phone off (or disconnect then reconnect the battery if the phone has locked up) :: Hold down the 0 (zero) key and whilst keeping it pressed, hold down the power button to turn the phone on.

After a few seconds, the phone will ask for a password. Enter 1234 and press OK.

This will perform a hard reset and will put the phone back to the state it was in when you recieved it.

(except for the handy fact that even though it says it is formatting the HDD, it isn't... all your stuff will still be on the drive!)

I found the original post about how to hard reset, buried somewhre deep within MoDoCo. It took me so long to find it the other night that I thought i'd re post it to double anyone elses chances of finding the solution!

This problem is very strange. I think it must be a faulty batch as suggested earlyier. As the only time I have had this problem is when I first turn my I300 on. I also have almost all the HDD full and almost all the internal storage full. I have 1.48mb left in storage an 54.87mb on HDD.
