MPX220 vs STRTRK (Cingular 3125)

Anyone know how the new Cingular 3125 compares to the MPX220 in terms of CPU power, storage, etc?

I'm looking to upgrade if it supports MiniSD and has an equivalent or faster CPU.

The 3125 has a different processor but technically runs at the same speed as the MPX220. It does have more RAM but uses microSD rather than miniSD so you would need to buy another card.

And of course it uses wm5 instead of wm2003.

btw from what I understand the processor in the mpx220 may be the same speed but it is actually superior (someone please correct me if I'm wrong)

I loved my 220's - all 3 of them that I had until I gave up and switched to an SMT5600. Upgraded to a Cingular 2125 last spring and now I have the 3125.

I sort of 'torture' my phones as I have about 2700 Contacts for them to sync up. Not too bad, but it gave the caller ID apps on all my previous cell phones fits. The result was an unrelyable phone that passed calls off to voicemail before ringing, or ignored attempts to pick up the call. This has not been a problem for the 3125, the first Smartphone I have had that actually gets along with large Contact databases. :(

This go progressively better as my phones gained horsepower and memory. Without a doubt, the 3125 is more capable than any of them. The pokey USB1.1 interface is a stupid stepbackward that I cannot fathom. Break out the tweezers and load the microSD into it's SD Card holder and load up your music and vidio files on your PC.

Initially, the phone was nearly flawless, but now that it's loaded up with my favourite Apps, cracks are showing. In fact, i'm about to have to do a Hard Reset, as the thing won't boot without hanging at a "Notification Error", which seems to be associated with RSS Newsbreak, an app that was bulletproof on my other phones and worked great on this one for several days. I'm also finding ActiveSync is unrelyable too.

I would take a few weeks if you can to see which apps are having compatibility issues. Ditto for the memory cards (remember how only some cards seemed to work for the 220!), then if it's going well, take the plunge!

Assuming I can get my phone to work again, I'll report on whether an identical set up without NewsBreak will work.

The 3125 is thinner and supports edge, but that's the only real significant upgrades. I have an MPx220 and was going to upgrade myself (I also have the K-Jam) and found no real upgrade or benefit.

Quite frankly, if the phone doesn't have at least HSDPA and hopefully WiFi, it's not an upgrade at all.

Agree. The 3125 is not much of an upgrade from the MPx220. But is sure is a sweet phone.

I just got one for the boss since his MPx220 died. So of course I am test driving it for a few days "so I can support him later" and I really like this phone. I use my MPx220 to play mp3s in the car so I'd have to get some bluetooth thing to jack into that, but otherwise I love the WM5 user interface, external controls, etc.

Plus, EDGE is faster, it's noticable.

But with the provider's messed up data plans and the requirement to get a seperate plan for each device (no high speed PC card without a second data plan) it just makes no sense to get a new phone without bluetooth modem high speed. Plus, no Wi-Fi, ever? How lame is that for a WM5 device?

I flat refuse to go for a candy bar or a QWERTY phone... Clamshell all the way. Never call anyone I don't want to.

But I don't see any hype about any new broadband ready clamshells. Only QWERTY and candy bar for Cingular so far next year.

I might get a Star Trek anyway. The price is right.

I think the idea is that if you get the $150 deal now (the boss's was only $134 for some reason) you're stuck with full price equipment for 2 years and just get phone envy within 9 months.

I'm going to try and hold out a couple more months and keep my ear to the ground.

Wait, these two phones are two different monsters. It may not have HSPDA or Wifi. But look at the difference. 1.3 MP camera, WM5 w/ built-in support for Bluetooth Stereo ( this doesnt even work correctly for Tornados or Wizards as it should), and the mini usb port doubles as the headphones jack.

The only thing MPx220 has on the 3125 is the external slot for mini sd swap, the 3125 is a micro sd under the battery.

The MPx220 also has a 1.3 MP camera.

WM5 w/ built-in support for Bluetooth Stereo
Agreed. For me, the bluetooth stereo was one of the selling points for the phone

and the mini usb port doubles as the headphones jack.

This was one of the things that killed it for me. It's not a standard miniUSB so you can't use a normal cable (however the MPx220 uses a proprietary cable). Also, you can't charge the device and use headphones at the same time (I have done this in my car with my MPx220 and K-Jam at times).

The only thing MPx220 has on the 3125 is the external slot for mini sd swap, the 3125 is a micro sd under the battery.

No. The microSD is under the battery *AND* the SIM card. You have to remove both to swap it. PITA.

But I think the rest is a matter of perspective. The only things the 3125 has over the MPx220 is the slimmer design and EDGE. Sure it has WM5 but I don't see anything I can't do with my MPx220 that I can with the 3125 simply because of the OS. Also, my other devices use miniSD so I would have to buy another card.

I already own the MPx220, so I couldn't justify the 3125. But if you don't have the MPx220, the 3125 is the hand's down top choice for current MS Smartphones. I love everything HTC puts out. The 3125 is the best of all the StrTrk models because of the additional 64MB ROM and larger battery. The larger buttons are better than those on the MPx220. The outside Media Player buttons are nice. It looks cooler than the MPx220.

The 3125 isn't a bad phone - it's a great phone. If I had to buy a new flip phone today, there is no phone *BUT* the 3125 I would consider. But the question was comparing the MPx220 vs. the 3125. Some gadget freaks will upgrade without looking back. I also have the K-Jam and use it as my primary now. Your situation or mileage may vary.

If you are considering the HTC StrTrk devices, the 3125 is the ONLY one to consider because of the ROM and battery. Since it's an HTC product, it will take any FW (and the best right now is the iMate rev).

Hope this helps...
