Yahoo! Go 2 released for Windows Mobile [Portrait] Smartphones

I have to confess i've never really been a Yahoo! person.

I use Google for searching, Exchange for mail, I'm not really into FlickR etc... so i've kinda missed out on the Yahoo! thang. Just lately however i've had a bit more exposure, firstly due to their 1.0 release of Go, and secondly because when I was looking around for a new free mail account for my dad, Yahoo! turned out to provide the best solution for his needs.

If you're a Windows Mobile'r, you've now got a real geniune reason to learn a bit more about Yahoo!, with their release of Yahoo! Go 2.0.

Initially released as a 'Gamma' version (think better than Alpha and Beta but not final!) for Portrait Smartphones only (with landscape + Pocket PCs to follow), the new application provides some very funky features, and is actually set to be installed in ROM on future HTC devices.

The application can be downloaded at the Yahoo Go! Windows Mobile page, and i've included their description of the application below...

A revolutionary design

Yahoo Go! is the first application optimized for the “small screen” of a mobile phone that truly makes it easy and fun to access the Internet. Everything about the Yahoo! Go interface is designed to be both visually stunning and give you what you want with the fewest clicks possible.

At its core is the carousel, used to navigate intuitively among the various Yahoo! Go widgets: your own personal channels for email, local info & maps, news, sports, finance, entertainment, weather, Flickr™ photos and search. Simply use the carousel to scroll over to the widget you want. Since Yahoo! Go uses advanced caching and background loading technology, your widget content is automatically and continuously “pushed” to your phone, so it’s always right there when you want it. You don’t need to endure lengthy downloads or navigate loads of links to get to what you want.

Your world, now on your phone

Yahoo! Go truly brings the Internet to you. Unlike prior applications that attempt to force-feed a PC experience to your phone, Yahoo! Go has taken the Internet services you love and optimized them for the mobile experience.

So wherever you go, the information you rely on goes along, too. You can check the weather, keep tabs on your teams, examine your stocks, and keep up with your favorite news sources, blogs and more from all across the Web. You can access all kinds of local news or get maps and directions to wherever you need to go.

Yahoo! Go knows what you like. The settings and content you selected in your Yahoo! account on your PC will automatically apply to your mobile experience—and vice-versa. If you’ve told Yahoo! which stocks to track, teams to follow, locations to remember, and that sort of thing, your phone will know all about it. All your personal info, including your contacts and email, remain in sync with your Yahoo! Web account. So even if you lose your phone, you won’t lose your data

Open to the entire Internet

Yahoo! Go is all about you: your unique tastes, needs and interests. That’s why it lets you customize your experience with content from anywhere on the Web. Prefer to get your news from The New York Times? Simply add its headlines to your News widget.

Yahoo! Go also makes it easy to get to other websites. Simply type in the name of a website you want to visit (like eBay), and oneSearch returns the link to the website. Click the link and you’re there.

It seems that Yahoo! are trying to take just about every internet medium, and optimise it for your device - whether that be mail, web, search, RSS, photos or whatever. It's a brave claim... i'm installing it on my Tornado now and will let you know how I fare shortly!

You can also view a (non Windows Mobile specific) tour at the Yahoo! Go 2 overview page.

P

PS the HTC S630 (Cavalier) and HTC S710 (Vox) shown on their list of devices! Someone has got an early peek methinks ;-)

320 * 240 for WM5 due in April - according to the text I received when trying to sign up from my Universal

Interesting that WM6 includes Windows Live and HTC are going to include Yahoo Go in ROM. Aren't they similar things? When you've had a chance to play maybe you could review both of them and let us know if they are competing products and the pros and cons of both?

Cheers

Just installed it on my Tornado... VERY cool indeed!

They are quite different actually... Windows Live is integrated into the OS, Yahoo! Go 2 is very much a standalone application.

Also, the UI in the tour is exactly how it looks on WinMo too!

I'm not 100%, but i think i am missing something...

yahoo site tells me to sling my hook and won't give me a link to dl the software...

either on the phone or browsing the web on the PC.

http://sites.mobile.yahoo.com/go/mobile/windows

gives me setup / cab files...

will update once i've tried them!
