How to update Compact IV Rom?

11 posts in this topic

Guys, as some of you know my wife now has a Compact IV. But boy is this thing slow and difficult to use!

Her phone has the 1.37 ROM. But I hear that the most recent ROM is 1.93.

Can someone please please please give me an idiots guide to getting the most recent ROM.

Or even better, recommending another simple ROM. I know there's a lot of stuff over at XDA Dev's - but thats way too much stuff. My wife just wants something simple, easy to use and quick.

When I had my VIII I was using Pauls Tweak pack - which was just the beez kneez. Is there any thing similar for the Diamond?

Thanks guys

There is still no official ROM update from T-Mo yet, although to be honest once you get into the swing of things and apply various tweaks/optimisations listed throughout these forums, the device works just fine (well at least mine does).

I'd start off with the TF3D config tool for starters, then work through some of battery saving posts going back to July/Aug last year. Keep an eye on things like your general memory usage. Once this gets low, things can really slow down, but you may just have a full Opera browser cache for instance.

The alternative is a cooked ROM which, I understand invalidates your warranty, although others clearly swear by them. I'll let someone else respond who's had more experience of such things.

Thanks dude.

I thought that there was the 1.93 ROM update??? I might be mistaken.

What Tweaks do you have?

My wife has nothing running in the background and still the phone is real sluggish. I remember my VIII and really liked it. It done almost everything. The Compact IV doesn't even come close - not even at making a simple phone call!

I'll browse this site a touch and see if I can add any Tweaks.

@ Paul - have you done a "Tweak" for the Diamond like you done for the VIII / Tytn II?

You have a very old ROM, and no amount nof tweaking is going to make much difference B) 1.37 is inherently slow, and presumably the Radio is still 1.00.03?

T-Mobile are sending repaired units back with ROM 1.93, but some new devices are still being supplied with 1.37, which is a joke. Also, T-Mobile UK have not released a ROM update. Indeed they don't even list the Compact IV in their support site.

So, to get a major speed increase and better phone/GPS/WiFi performance, your only option is to install an 'unofficial' ROM, or even an 'official' HTC ROM. Both of these require the installation of HardSPL before proceeding, otherwise the update WILL fail. This is a painless process, and if you want to proceed, someone will guide you :( Once you have HardSPL, you can then flash any available ROM version. Be aware that a ROM upate (and installing HardSPL) does clear all the contents from your main memory. It also risks invalidating your warranty, but there is no eveidence that any operator has actually invoked that excuse.

Hey Neil thanks for the reply.

I notice that HTC have a Diamond update on their website (updated 27/02). If we were to update to this would this make the ROM better?

If not we'll just have to send the phone back for repairs! What a pain in the ****!!

Undoubtedly the HTC ROM will be a lot better, but unfortunately as a T-Mobile device user, you can't download the ROM from HTC. Also, you would still need to install HardSPL otherwise the ROM update will fail.

Thanks Neil.

We sent the phone back today for repair. They said it'll take about 2 weeks to get back to us.

Once it does get back to us I'm gonna pick your brain for an Idiots Guide To Installing The Best Possible ROM.

What ROM are you running dude?

I remember my VIII was absolutely brilliant once I'd tweaked it. Faster, touch screen much more responsive, new texting screen and keypad, better contacts look. Brilliant. It would be great to get this stuff onto my wifes phone.

On xda there is a new HTC branded rom using a newish radio untouched by outsiders hands. I used it on my mdaciv (don't think you would need to hard spl as its a 'legit' rom) but the reception was a bit iffy so I upgraded to the latest radio and its working fine

Thanks Stunno. Will check that out. Is this ROM a CAB file?

Although, after saturdays footy result I really am not too sure I should trust you ;-)

You will need HardSPL to install any ROM except an original T-Mobile one, even an HTC ROM.

ROMs come as a PC installer- CAB files are run by the phone's operating system, but as a ROM update effectively destroys the current ROM, a CAB install wouldn't work :(

TYhe ROM process itself is easy though- we can advise as & when you need. If your C IV is returned with a 1.93 ROM, you may find it performs as well as you need.

Hi

I've just got a brand new MDACIV today as an upgrade, and really disappointed to find its on ROM version 1.37.110.3 too! Really poor of T-Mobile not to update their current stocks.

So ... should I try to return it and demand a 1.93 ROM (no guarantee they'll do it), or should I update the ROM myself? I'm tempted by the latter (not bothered about invalidating warranty) if someone could kindly explain how to do it and recommend a current ROM.

Thanks in advance for a great forum!

Mark
