Bit of an idea.

Firstly, hi all, this is my first post here, so be gentle!

I am planning on ordering a Vega sometime in the near future (whenever the thing actually stays in stock long enough for me to order), and my only reservation is the lack of 'home' button on the machine. It seems to be a fairly majorish problem, but, fear not! I have an idea...

Why not make the physical 'return' button time sensitive, so if you just tap it it goes back, but if you hold it for more than a second it goes to the home screen?

Questions, has anyone done this? (A search of google and here didn't find anything..but I could have missed it).

Would it be possible to make an app to do this, or would it be a firmware update?

Finally, anyone here able to write simple apps and fancy having a go?

This might be a stupid idea for obvious reasons which I can't see, so feel free to flame me to death. ;)

Cheers.

It pretty much already does this, a long press of the power/suspend key gives you the dialogue box with options including the home key. However the notification bar is always visible and it has a home button.

I was mainly thinking it would be useful for full screen applications, as I believe the notification bar isn't displayed then?

If you can already do it, I suppose it'd be fairly simple to change the software to take you straight 'home' after 1 second of holding then. What options come up when you hold the button down? Anything you couldn't do without?

The long-press-back is mapped to the menu key.

What do you mean?

He means when you hold down the back button it triggers the menu option in the particular app (should that option exist).

One second of hold on the power is suspend a long hold takes you to device options( Home, power off, suspend, audio off). Back button is just short press back and long press menu like paul said.

Oh okay, so it really isn't suck a big deal then? And if needed someone could easily rewrite the software slightly to make a quicker home button then. Excellent.

Now I just need to find stock of the damn thing!

It's rather interesting to see that Honeycomb doesn't require hardware buttons at all, from what i can see of the demo it has an extra button bar at the bottom which auto hides. http://www.talkandroid.com/22964-forget-gi...ning-honeycomb/

I'm sure it needs some sort of button ... a POWER one for starters!!

That's a big oversight if you ask me, it needs at the very least a BACK button, otherwise how are you supposed to get out of a full screen game if it doesn;t have an exit option.

The back button on the Vega wont get you out of many full screen apps especially if they are locked up. Most times I have to use a long press on the power key and back to home so the Motorola would probably have a similar power button set up as the vega.
