The Beginner's Guide to Acer Liquid Metal

This is a beginner's guide for Liquid metal (Mercury?). You must have android 2.2 as of now. But if you have 2.3.6 you should still continue reading.

The first thing you will notice is the Different GEN's:

Now different GEN's have support for different languages (Keyboard support). According to my observation:

GEN1: Support for only English.

GEN2: Support for English and any other language similar to English.

GEN3: I had this one pre-installed. It had support for English as well as support for Arabic.

Your phone's GEN can be changed according to your wish. There were no updates for GEN3 so i migrated to GEN1. GEN1 gets most of the support so migrating to it is better.

So if you have a default Android 2.2 liquid mt. You need to download

http://vache-android...EA.GEN1.bin.zip

It is Android 2.2 with support for English Keyboard only.

To flash it you must download ADT by MA

http://android.modac...l/page__hl__adt

After flashing you will have android 2.2 GEN1.

Now You could either flash it to 2.3.6 OR you could do what i did.

I Downloaded 2.3.3 from Acer's website and installed it. Now android 2.3.3 is Awesome and the Acer UI makes it looks more EPICER. Will discuss it later.

I had to connect my phone and the setup type thingy did its work. No data had been lost yet.

Now to migrate to 2.3.6 i used SD download mode. All the instructions to do that here:

http://android.modac...0013-emea-gen1/

After doing it i Lost all the Data and i Had android 2.3.6 GEN1 which i felt kinda inferior to 2.3.3.

Now to flash a custom ROM you need to download AmonRa_2.2:

And then follow the instructions, they will be briefed in the Rom's thread. I will compare Rom's later.

Here's a detailed guide of how to install Custom ROM:

COMPARISON OF ANDROID VERSION AND ACER UI

Android 2.2: For the settings the bar for apps had to be pressed. It was kinda uncomfortable. Also there were two columns of apps on the main page. And you couldn't place widget. The good thing was the library if you scrolled right and recently visited pages on the left. Ability to place widgets before unlocking the phone made it unique.

Android 2.3.3: According to me the best version of Android and the way it uses acer UI is awesome. Apps bar changed to just one column . You cna place widgets on both pages before and after unlocking. On the extreme right is the gallery in the type of a Ferris wheel thingy and on the lest is the recently visited pages in the same Ferris wheel type thingy. Notifications bar has change to drag down.

Android 2.3.6: Same as 2.3.3 but no more Gallery and Recently visited pages available.

Comparison of Custom Rom's:

Gingerounay 3.0: http://android.modac...y-301-05112011/

All the details are mentioned in the link above. Didnt quite look appealing to me. Its like an optimized version of your current android 2.3.6 with a new theme. Not very appealing.

t&l Metal: http://android.modac...m-236-tl-metal/

Has two versions, one with Acer UI and one with out. Optimizes your android makes it look better and all the regular stuff. Still not appealing enough unless it was for android 2.3.3.

MIUI: http://forums.miuian...t-port&p=104374

A step beyond the regular android. Extremely lots of features. Doesn't have Acer UI. Would be my second choice. Has a lot of awesome things. It still has some bugs and stuff but they will be fixed soon. The themes are really cool and worth checking out. The only thing is it doesn't make your phone Unique. If any other person has MIUI you will have no advantage over him. Acer UI is according to me one of the best UI's.

CyanogenMod-7.2: http://android.modac...od-71-liquidmt/

Now this is something to talk about. I was thinking about installing MIUI but then i took a look at the video by them. And i was like WOAH! i think this is the video:

I am too lazy to watch and check it again so here is a video demostrating the gesture thingy:

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=dHwMoJ4FZeM

The thing i liked the most was that on the lock screen if you made a F you could open anything whose saved gesture is F. Example i set F as the gesture of Facebook. I make an F and facebook will open. And it doesnt need to be a character. It can be anything. Anything at all. The bad part is if any other person also has cyanogen Mod you both have nothing better over each other unless you have some hardware things better. And it also has different colored notification LED's! YAY!

LASTLY I WOULD LIKE TO THANK

davidevinavil

FOR HELPING ME OUT WITH THESE STEPS.

I have messaged him and if he replies i will also make a tutorial about customizing ROM's according to your choice. I really miss the Ferris wheel Thingies. :(

Can this get Pinned?

There are three versions avaiable:

Noogai's : Out dated and lots of things that didnt work. Discontinued i guess.

Lens: A complete and fully functional version of cyanogen mod and i think radioFM doesn't work and error in wifi tethering. It is version 7.1

Davide's: Same as lens but has some extra modules, and the newly released Headphone sound hack. It is version 7.2

The difference arent clearly stated but according to me these are the most obvious ones.

According to me Davide's because it is the most updated and you wont have to install things from scratch. Like the headphone hack etc.
