Google officially announces the 2013 Nexus 7

After much leakage, Google have finally officially announced the second iteration of the Nexus 7, which will be known as the Nexus 7 (2013). The old one (predictably) becomes the Nexus 7 (2012).

Priced from $229 (international pricing and availability TBC) and available in 16GB, 32GB and 32GB LTE variants, the new Nexus 7 builds on the willing formula of it's predecessor - premium design, feel and specifications at a market leading price - and takes them to the next level.

The biggest improvement is the screen. While the 1280x800 panel on the original was one of the best at the time, the successor offers a resolution of 1920x1200 while staying the same physical size, thereby offering 323 pixels per inch. A Corning Gorilla Glass coating keeps it looking pristine!

The tablet is thinner than before at 8.65mm thick and with slimmer bezels to the side of the screen, making it more manageable in the hand (although it is pretty tall). It is also lighter at 290g. The soft touch feel of the back remains but this time without the 'Steve Mcqueen dimples'. The whole device is decked out in black... giving it something of a 'stealth' look!

The 1.2 Megapixel front camera is still present but now it's joined by a 5 megapixel item on the back. No more need for MoDaCo Camera Launcher I suspect! :)

The Nexus 7 now includes stereo speakers at the top and bottom of the device (when held in portrait), but sadly they are on the back. No boomsound-esque front facing ones here. On the front you do get a Nexus 10 like notification light so it's not all bad! Since the Nexus logo on the back is written as if the device is meant to be held horizontally, I wonder if that is Google's primary intention - as a video consumption device (while still great at all the other stuff!).

One of the key complaints with the original was that no MHL port was present. That's still the case - no MHL - but instead you get the Slimport standard, as seen on the Nexus 4. Hey, at least you can now plug your device into a big screen!

As you'd expect for a Nexus device Android 4.3 is preloaded, powered by a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU and a 400MHz Adreno 320 GPU. 2GB RAM is on board.

Up to 9 hours of use is to be expected from the 3950 mAh battery, which can be charged both by microUSB and using the built in Qi compatible wireless charging!

The 2013 Nexus 7 will be available in the US beginning 30th July (with more countries, including the UK, to follow soon after).

The base 16GB model is $229, the 32GB model $269 and the LTE equipped 32GB model comes in at $349. Beware if you are considering importing a LTE model - there are different devices for US and European bands, so if you buy one over there - it probably won't work over here.

Itching to learn more? Head on over to the Nexus 7 page at Google.
