My San Diego is getting very full and I would like to start again with a clean HD. I have searched extensively but can find no specific information on how to do this so any advice appreciated. My phone runs original ICS 4.0.4 and is not rooted.

If you mean the USB storage (It doesn't have an HD ;) ) go to settings and click Storage and then Erase USB Storage. Don't forget to read the warning message.

Thanks for the info. I have erased the USB Storage but can no longer load files to the phone as it appears to be unmounted. Is there a way to mount the USB storage as I cant see one.

Erasing USB storage won't unmount the storage, is it the internal USB storage we're talking about? It's around 10GB in size.

Try rebooting.
