Non roman characters in Messaging app

My wife uses the FlickWnn Japanese keyboard which has worked perfectly on every version of Android we've had. Installed it last night on the new Tesco Moto G. Message is entered via the custom keyboard as usual. The message then goes up into the "sent" window but the message body disappears ie nothing is shown. Recipient receives a blank text. Same keyboard but using the roman characters rather than Japanese characters works fine. I will experiment with other messaging apps but has anyone seen this with any other character sets and the standard messaging app?

EDIT: Solved - there was a GSM 7 bit/auto encoding option I'd never seen before. Changed to Auto and no problem

Great phone for the money so far.
