Well it certainly makes no sense to throw it in the bin if you don't know what's wrong. What's most likely happened, is that he's lost his bootloader. You we're right about one thing:

You have to enter recovery. Hold down Volume up and then press and hold the Power button with it. Keep holding it for about 10 seconds until any splash screen (maybe android robot picture?) disappears. If you can get into ClockworkMod, then you can recover.
