Guest PaulOBrien
Following on from the teasing on its website, HTC have today formally announced the release of the RE camera. So what is it? It's not an action camera, it's not a GoPro competitor, it's just a quirky looking, easy to hold camera for everyone.A quick look at the specs first. The IP57 rated camera (which can be boosted to IPx8 with an add-on accessory) has a fixed focus 16MP 1/2.3” CMOS sensor with a 146-degree wide-angle lens and supports full HD video recording at 30FPS or 4 x slow motion support at 720P. The 820 mAh rechargeable battery is good for 1,200 photos or 1 hour 40 min of continuous FHD video recording, charging is via a microUSB connection (which also provides mass storage capability).Connectivity with Android or iPhone devices (yes iPhone!) comes courtesy of Bluetooth and WiFi direct, with a recamera application for both platforms providing both image management / sync and remote shutter functionality.'Point and shoot' has never been a more apt description. No framing the shot, no adjustments or raft of knobs and buttons to worry about, you just point and press the big button on the back of the 'periscope' - the only other button on the front is used to toggle the slow motion video mode.I've been fortunate enough to have a play and it does work well, taking surprisingly decent quality pictures.A tripod mount can be found on the bottom and a whole host of accessories will be available for the device including various bike / head / suction mounts, an extended battery, charging dock and more. There will be quite the ecosystem when it comes to market.Orange, green, white and blue colours will be available, in the now-familiar HTC hues.I've included the full specs and some more images below... what do you think? Guest awarner
I really can't see the point of this device, even the photo showing it mounted to a bike would be shooting mainly sky by the angle its mounted on.
