Asus creates yet another good looking, but ultimately underwhelming, Zenfone variant

Asus Zenfone variants seem to be coming thick and fast... and now here's another one - the snappily named, and rather good looking 'ZenFone 2 Deluxe Special Edition'. Featuring 'Drift Silver' or 'Carbon Night' finishes and gorgeous red accents, the new device looks the part and as well as offering 128GB onboard storage plus microSD expansion, it also has a new Intel Z3590 processor. But there's a problem.

First up, the Z3590 is only a very slightly souped up version of the Z3580 in the 'regular' Zenfone 2 (details here on CPUBoss, but basically you're getting a slightly faster clock speed for the CPU and GPU). That's really not going to make a material difference to the overall operation of the device, which is impressively smooth already. What's the other issue? The 'Deluxe Special Edition' is still running Android 5.0 - like the lesser models, there is still no Android 5.1 (or Marshmallow) update. Asus are not doing a good job at all of keeping the device's software up to date. Together with ongoing reports of unexplained battery drain that have plagued the device since its launch (and persist, even with the latest OTA), it definitely does not inspire confidence.

Will we see this version in the UK? I doubt it. That's not to say it can't be easily imported however! Head on over to the Asus website for more details.
