QUOTE(Paul (MVP) @ Sep 4 2007, 12:59)

I thought i'd start this thread before things started to get out of hand
The TyTN II has started shipping from a number of UK retailers - including eXpansys with http://www.modaco.com/HTC-TyTN-II-MoDaCo-Speci-t258736.html - and they'll be dropping into the hands of eager customers any time now. All the stores will tell you there's never been a launch like it... so this topic is for YOU to post if you're one of the lucky ones! Pics, loves, hates, anything... this is where it goes
And everyone - enjoy! Ooh, it feels like an early Christmas

I have a 5 years old sim card at vodafone and there is no problem using even with HSDPA (3,5G). So if you have to have a contract with your provider then you able to use 3G on any devices. In our country it can be done with a simple SMS to them and they are automaticly activating/deactivating the service or i can change it at MyVodafone or call the CS (Costumer service). For more information contact with your provider.
Posted by: Sonicr360 Sep 4 2007, 16:26
Hi Paul, I think that is the problem I am faced with - As far as I know its not 3G enabled - I only get GPRS.
So ... if I get the modaco offer.... do I go back to Vodafone to get a 3G card or something (SIM) ?
Sorry for the dumb question, but wanted to be sure what I am doing is right !

@Hightec - There should be a "G" on your SIM as part of its IMEI
@Sonicr360 - Vodafone are bringing this out in the next few weeks as the V1615, if you don't have a 3G card you should be able to get yours swapped for around £10 - £20. I'm not sure if my supplier deals direct to the public, however you could always try as they are UK distributers for HTC have a look at http://www.hughsymons.com/

Hi damianbyrne,
Ok well I spoke to Vodafone business centre (where my mobile is registered with) and they tell me that I do not need to do anything and it should just "work".
Tried to explain I have never had 3G before, but she believes it will just work without doing anything. I think she may have got the wrong end of the stick here !
I have an old XDA EXEC and I am sure that was 3G enabled so I can plug my SIM into this - does anyone know if you have to configure any settings on the XDA EXEC for 3G use ?

You don't have to do anything to "Enable" 3G, it either works or it doesn't, what you must remember however is the coverage of 3G, if you are not in 3G coverage you will only get GPRS.
OK I have just looked at a £G Vodafone SIM I have and the format of a 3G SIM number is as follows
8944 1000 1234 5678 9012 G123 (This is not a real IMEI number, just the correct format)
The G in this case symbolises it's a 3G SIM, if your sim does not have the G, then it is not 3G

I'm afraid it will not work. Your SIM will not be 3G unless you have had a 3G sim card upgrade in the past. I bought a TyTn 1 and had to purchase a new sim card to access 3g speeds etc.

I believe the 3 Sim won't work as they use Usims rather than the standard sims, AFAIK these sims only work with 3 branded devices.
Might be worth trying though, you never know.

If you don't have a 3G Sim, just call up your provider, it's in their best interest to send you one as you access data a hell of a lot faster (therefore your data usage will be higher), the only way they may not want to do this is if you're on an unlimited data tariff.
Be warned though, if you are on a Pay as you go data package, be VERY careful, I managed to rack up a £300 bill in a month using a 3G sim on a Hermes, apparently this device is 3.5G therefore even faster...

There's nothing wrong with dirty and raw. I once had.... (ok not for here)
nice vid though, have you got the GPS working yet, I have updated the QuickGPS but TomTom 6 wont pick the GPS up, I have tried with the only available GPS receivers and COM ports (4 & 7) but nothing, might have to hard reset and try the included TomTom rather than my boxed version.

Programs -> GPS Program Port COM4
Hardware -> GPS hardware port 'none', baud rate 4800

Somehow i've managed to totally lose GPS before by messing with that stuff, fixed only by a hard reset!

Since January this year, 3 have relaxed their rules on using non-3 sourced phones, and a 3 USIM should work fine in any 3G device. A lot of people use 3 SIMs in Hermes PDA's so it works in principle.
The only stipulations are that the phone must be 3G, and you are not allowed to switch the band to GSM only (GSM services are provided to 3 by O2 and Orange, to whom they pay a license/traffic fee); genuine 3 phones don't allow band switching. If there is no valid 3 signal, then of course its OK to use GSM- keep the setting at 'Auto'

Not sure if this helps, but the Tytn II fits into the Carcomm cradle made for the Hermes, so it might fit the Brodit one also.

Placed my order at 2pm yesterday on www.devicewire.com and even though the website says order before 4pm for next day delivery I am NOT going to receive it today. When I called to ask why their excuse was they don't have enough staff to process all the extra orders created by the demand for TyTn II. Order from this company only if you are in no rush for the device!

I have a 3 sim performing very happily in an unlocked Palm Treo 750v. Only difference I've spotted is that it goes into roaming mode when out of 3g signal, but I still receive calls quite happily and 3 haven't said anything.

I've just got mine, and must say first off I was nicely surprised by CityLink delivery form Handtec.co.uk, as I've got my Kaiser first thing in the morning on my desk at work. :) Anyway, box is lovely, as well as device itself. One unpleasant surprise, tough - putting SIM card on the fly (while device was on already), caused instant crash. :( It just switched off itself straight away after putting the card in. Not nice. :( But anyway, I'm going to explore my Kaiser today extensively, and as someone already mentioned - I wonder how much work I'll get done today. ;)

Dear All,
I am intreaged that so many of you appear to be buying these devices. What contracts are you all on?
I figured most people on here would be on a contract, and hence get these devices free when they are up for an upgrade (typically in month 9 of a 12 month contract for £35/month contracts on orange). Whats the deal here - why are you all buying your Kaiser when you could get this free (probably)?
If you are on SIM only deals or on pay as you go, are there any good unlimited data deals out there.
P.s. anyone know when the Kaiser is on orange!!
Thanks

Hi Everyone
After talking to Vodafone, and talking to someone who seems to know the difference between a SIM, 3G and a phone, I have ordered a NEW SIM which will be in the post.
As someone mentioned, it was free of charge. Thanks to whoever told me this.
The "G" indicates its WAP enabled and does use GPRS - When the new SIM arrives, I have to activate for 3G
Interestingly, they could not tell me what their price plans are for this... told me to goto vodafone.co.uk - does anyone have the actual link for 3G costs?
Also, called Expansys and tried to offer the "Modoco Tytn II" - guess what?? Never heard of it .... was told this device does not exist. Explained its on their site, and they were adament it was NOT!!!
So after a lenghy debate, and giving them the link and the product code, they found it! Guys name was Rob Barclay if anyone is interested.
Just got the email to say its been orderd, however they could NOT confirm it would be sent today ! So a little annoyed - I know their service leaves alot to be desired, but I can wait.
I just hope it does not crash or cause issues like the exec does! I will be pleased to let my XDA EXEC go now, as its quite heavy (at least based on the stats between the Exec and Tytn II).
I would like to take this chance to thank Paul for all his hard work and information about this. I know there was some complaints about getting alot of emails about this, but I for one am VERY grateful for this. And what on earth is wrong with the delete key!!
For those that do not like it ... delete it! Without sites like coolsmartphone, 4winmobile.com and Mod - I do not believe most of us would have so much valuable info at our fingertips!
Well Done
Simon
P.S. Will report back my findings whenever it arrives.

Thought people might find this page useful. It lists APNs for UK providers as well as other settings.
http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html
I found this page when I first flashed my T-Mobile Vario II with a HTC ROM and also when I got a HTC P3600 from Expansys. My T-Mobile SIM card worked straight away in both HTC flashed phones, but for web and email access I needed to enter my service provider's APN (for GPRS and 3G).

I don't know what quality exactly this picture is, but it's the very first Kasier's picture, which I did just a while ago. I've just started off the camera, and shoot. No options tweaked, no nothing. And frankly - I am very, I mean VERY surprised with it's good quality. :)

SonicR360 -
Vodafone UK charge £1 for up to 15Mb in any one day (midnight to midnight) then something like £3 per Mb.
You can also pay £7.50 per month to get 120Mb per month for free, if you go over that limit, you'll then pay the £1 per day... as above.
(The good thing is that Vodafone Live! services like MobileTV don't eat into your data allowance, so streaming Sky Sports etc. for ages isn't a worry...)

Mine came in before 08.30 this morning!!!
I hadnt even got into the office and it was there waiting for me on the desk!!
Great little device, havnt really done much with it. EXCELLENT packaging...like the box a lot. It does come with a case, but expansys didnt list that on the description so I got two!! Nevermind, one of the guys at work bouhgt it off me as it fits his phone in quite nicely too!!
I will have more of a play when I get home, I need to get some applications installed and then i will give it a real thrashing...
EDIT:
My reception seems really poor in the TyTN II compared to the old TyTN/M3100 I have.

My "External GPS Settings" are as they were out of the box, yet google maps does not seem to want to connect properly.
Google Maps are working out of the box with built-in GPS chip. No changes in configuration needed. Same with Tom Tom, however it took few minutes for GPS to fix position. Maybe you should wait longer - it usually takes a while before GPS data is obtained, especially with brand new devices...

How sensitive is the GPS receiver?
I have a HTC Trinity which uses Qualcomm chip & HTC Artemis the Sirf III chip. I always go back to the Artemis as the GPS is much more sensitve.

This is worrying - 3G signal or normal?

Both I would say.
As for the GPS...I still cant seem to get google maps to connect. It doesnt do anything!! It's almost as if Google Maps times out too quickly while waiting for the GPS to pick up satellites.
IS there a way of testing the GPS unit itself and just viewing lat/long data etc? I dont know whats going on...it doesnt seem to work at all for me at the moment. I guess I will have to wait until I can get tomtom or something installed to test it properly....

Possibly. Try Tom Tom. As I said, I've been waiting few minutes for GPS signal to fix the position in TT, but once that was done - both TT and Google Maps were working fine with Kaiser. I'm going to test it more today on the way back home (London N1 to TW14), so I might be able to tell more in regards of GPS accuracy and sensitivity...

SonicR360 -
Vodafone UK charge £1 for up to 15Mb in any one day (midnight to midnight) then something like £3 per Mb.
You might be able to get the Vodafone unlimited tarriff for £25 per month (and apparently they mean unlimited), a bit steep I know but it might work out cheaper in the long run.

Sonic
Glad you got the Sim free of charge, however EVERY time I have set PDAs up, you either have a 3G SIM or you don't, as far as I am aware the only activation they do is to enable the sim, they normally ship them in a "barred" state to avoid, light fingers stealing and using them.
I would double check they are sending you a 3G sim.
The Prices for Vodafone as far as I remember are something like
PAYG - 50p - £1 per Mb
£7.50 - 120Mb
£25.00 - Unlimited (Fair Usage Policy)
I think these are correct but you might need to check, they are the same as the Datacard tariffs, although you ill need to "bolt on" voice to data or vice versa.
I'll see if I can get the actual costs for you

Love my new TyTn II, hate the fact it won't activesync anymore.
Edit: Ignore me, it was fine when not going through the USB hub.
FWIW, I'm not very happy with the camera quality. There seems to be little dynamic range and a lot of contrast blow-out losing detail. I'd use the camera for taking a snap shot of something unimportant I just wanted to record visually, but for holiday snaps etc. where I want quality I can print from, I'll carry my compact fuji digicam I think.

Will wait and see - /vodafone should be sending the 3G SIM today, how long that takes remains to be seen.
But not in too much of a rush, then I will propably opt for the largest data bundle they do (business user)
Hope the device lives up to the hype !

Exactly - same thing I've figured on my way home. Google Maps' timeout is too short for GPS to fix position, so Google thinks GPS is broken/not present. I've started TT, got the fix and now it started working in both TT and GM with no problems at all...

Now that you have your production release devices - have you (or anyone) discovered what exactly it takes to upgrade the "TomTom Taster Edition"? I'm curious if you have to buy a full separate version of tomtom - ie. the whole software package and install it along with the maps usind the dvd's OR if you can just use the TomTom software that comes with the TyTN II and order/download additional maps via the web.

Looks like the sensor is a bit noisy, low-res (hence the low edge detail) due to lack of good lenses, and contrast is off. Wouldn't do too well at dpreview.com, but looks very usable for a cellphone camera; absolutely fabulous for those "need a picture of this" pictures, and destroys what I've seen from my cellphone on a good day.

Question I want to ask is, how good is the sync? Any problems? My N95 syncs quite well, but Anniversaries don't sync across too well. EG if I put in an Anniversary on the phone and then synch everything over to my Mac, and then back from Mac to phone, the Anniversaries then show as Meetings - where the start time is 0:00 hours and end time is 0:00 hours. So the message comes up on screen for all of 1 minute!!! (hope what I just said made sense

Sorry, but I personally think those and other pictures I've seen taken with the final version of Kaiser look rather awful.

They are are very blurry, the colors are totally off, contrast is very bad, and they lack detail. Actually I think the camera is one of my biggest disappointments with Kaiser. Compare for example with pictures on Flickr taken with Apple Iphone. Iphone has a 2 megapixel camera and no options, and still it takes pictures with way better color accuracy, detail and sharpness.

Don't get me wrong, in general I think cameras in mobile phones are just crap and would never be as good as regular cameras (at least as long, as they have plastic and crap lenses). However, comparing Kaiser's camera quality with Hermes, or literally any other phone I've had - it's really great. And while I will always favor regular cameras over camera-phones, there are situations and circumstances when camera-phone is quite useful, so regarding that kind of need Kaiser's phone is impressive (IMVHO, of course ;).

Kaiser has TouchFLO limited to finger scrolling only, no 3D cube - which is quite ok IMHO, as I found 3D cube feature quite useless, frankly (I've been playing a while with TouchFLO a bit on my HTC Wizard, after flashing to WM6).

It's a little bit off-topic, but the moment when I've started to actually see advantages of camera-phones was recent Notting Hill Carnival in London. I didn't bring my camera there, so I've ended up taking pictures with my wife's Sony Ericsson S500i - 'better these than nothing', I thought. But later on, while checking these pictures on my computer I was quite impressed, actually. I was expecting real crap, but in fact these pictures were excellent enough to resize them a bit and send off to friends and family back in Poland.

T-Mobile's fair usage policy excludes that kind of usage, but technically
it is possible. I think as long as you don't abuse it, like sucking lots of data each day, they don't mind. Well, at least I use it occasionally, and never had problems. Works the same also for pay as you go £1/day deal.

I've been traveling on my usual route from Old Street Tube station area to Heathrow area, passing by King's Cross, Euston, Marylebone, then A40 to Northolt and then Parkway A312 down to Heathrow. Generally it was quite OK, I must say, GPS locked position quite quickly, and then kept track without significant problems. The only thing I've noticed was very variable GPS signal strenght, it was going between minimum (one bar) to maximum quite often, but did not seem to affect position tracking.
The only thing disappointing, not related to GPS itself tough - it's coverage of free TT map of London. It's basically central London + zones up to 3, maybe 4, roughly. Definitely doesn't cover Heathrow area... :( On my route yesterday map coverage has finished on A40, somewhere around Hanger Lane / Perivale.

Thanks. Is there a concensus on who has the best coverage, and who has the best HSPDA (and HUSPDA) coverage out there?
Again I'd say Vodafone who claim 99%, stear clear of O2, I can't say for Orange and T-mobile, but we need as close to 100% as a nursing business we need as much coverage of the UK as possible, therefore we're going with Vodafone.
I have a 3G Datacard and O2 doesnt even come a close 2nd

Anyone else have a degree of movement in the chrome-like buttons?
The red (hang up) button, and in fact the whole chrome section it is in, moves by about 1-2mm up and down - as through it's pivoting on the green (answer) button.
Posted by: wi11 Sep 6 2007, 13:24
Just checked and mine pivots too a few mm, doesn't really bother me. I wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't pointed it out in fact.

QUOTE(luis omar @ Sep 6 2007, 14:34)

So far, so good. :) It is noticeably quicker and snappier than Hermes, even after installing whole lot of favorite apps. But I've also noticed some glitches like unexpected hangs for few seconds already - but it does not cover overall great impression.
Camera - very impressive for me, as I said few times already. 3G/HSDPA over Bluetooth/Internet Sharing - I've checked just today in the morning and I was blazed with the speed of ~140-150 KB/s, while with Hermes I was only able to achieve up to 60 KB/s with the same SIM card (T-Mobile + w'n'w) and same location! TouchFLO with finger scrolling, another excellent addition. GPS seems to work fine and stable. Finally I can use Google Maps without external GPS receiver. Finally, the design - looks brilliant, with that shiny black finish around front cover. I must say final retail edition looks a bit better than prototype demo I've had chance to play with earlier.
Shame that Java doesn't work properly, as I pointed out in other topic. Someone at xda-dev suggested to install other version of Java, which I'll try later today.
My very first impressions are really good. As I said, I wasn't that impressed about a week ago, when I was playing with prototype Kaiser at INKINO shop in London (Tottenham Court Road), but now all I can say it's just great. :)

Lads, what do you think the possibilities are that the tytn 2 will come down a little in price over the next month or so? I know the N95 dropped by around £50 - £70 in the first month.

What are people's opinion on the dpad and button placement and overall one handed ability. The hermes buttons were too small and close together but the dpad was decent. But it wasn't rubberized and the ultra smooth battery cover often made the device almost slippery to me. The Wizard dpad was excellent but only had 2 poorly designed soft key buttons and no start and OK.
I have to imagine looking at the pics using this one handed should be better then their previous devices. With the rubberized back for grip and the large dpad and good buttons for easy clicking.

Button layout seemed quite awkward for me at the first glance - buttons are very close each other and it's easy to press the wrong button by mistake. But it all just comes down to getting used to... It is, however, quite good to operate with one hand, as you have all button in one place, instead of spreading to top and bottom of the screen, like it was in Hermes.

They should be able to. The GPS is just a device/service, to which apps make requests. It'll work the same way as the 'net connections which are just available for all apps once they're running.

Hi All
Well got the Tytn 2 this morning, and my new Vodafone 3G sim arrived late afternoon (My contract has always been with Vodafone, just wanted to get the new handset and get 3G enabled).
But so far, I have been unable to get through to their team to activate it - and I want to get this right, before starting the phone up!
So far... its still in the box

Ive been using mine without a sim since i got it....Ive only just put mine in and setup the data connections.
Posted by: Syphon Filter Sep 6 2007, 17:40
It's NOT as snappy as I imagined it would be...it still feels a little sluggish like the hermes did at times...is it something I am doing? The only home screen plugin I have running is the HTC Home thing...
It's weird....definitely not as fast as I imagined.

Hi everybody,
Congrats to those who are lucky enough to get their hands on this new toy. And a question to them : is the GSM/3G performance good or bad? I own an M600i and is a crap in terms of GSM performance compared to my wife's Prada. Because of that the phone function wich is the most important is useless some times.

I must say, I've found call quality to be fantastic so far. Data speeds also seem a lot better than my old M3100 (Hermes).
Does anyone fancy knocking up a quick "how to" for getting your data connection working over bluetooth/USB with a windows Vista machine for internet access etc...it would be much appreciated.

I agree. However, it's quite hard to find a place where signal is really weak in London, so hard to tell how it behaves in such conditions.

Ok well im stumpted here!! On WM5 you had the Terminal Services client. I cannot find anything on WM6 apart from talking about using Remote Desktop Mobile.
But I cannot find it!! Is it me.... or am I being really stupid and need to go back to the manual.
Still working my way through all of this yet !

Just found a download for RMD for WM6 - so I will download this and try it!
Worse case, do a hard reset!! Too much on here to take in over a few hours, plus got work now!
Managed to sync 4.5 to Tytn2 over Active Sync and wireless. No problems there!
Speedwise, seems to be ok - although again not had a good chance to play around with it!
Only touched 5 - 10% of the product so far! MAnual is VERY large!!! So a long read me thinks !

Howdy. Mike here from Hamilton Ontario Canada. I have my TyTN II now (yay!) and I'm charging it up for the first time. I was in meetings in Toronto all day or else I'd have skipped out to play with this puppy sooner.... I bet I'm one of only a handful of people in Canada to have chased one of these down so early... I find being an early adopter isnt such a bad thing... technology is something that actually pays you if you are an IT professional. :-)
The phone detected the Rogers network no problem and immediately came up with 3G indication. I live in an area that supports the higher HSDPA speeds.. so I'll be placing a phone call to Rogers right now to get on a data plan.
First impression is 100% drool factor. :-)

Hi and congrats to the happy owners of the new toy!
A few questions which have not been answered yet (AFAIK):
- How does the Tytn II play videos with TCPMP? Say a DivX in 640x480 @ 1500k/s like the Matrix trailer in high quality? I guess most people coming from a VGA pda would like to know if they have to forget about watching films or if it's an option on the Tytn II.
- What's the battery life like?
- More feedback on GSM reception/call quality (after all, it's primarily a phone!)
- Benchmark of the 4GB HDSC (r/w speed)
- Does the voice dialing work well, and does it work through a BT handset?
Thanks for all the info!

I prefer iGO's user interface, speed and quality/details of maps over TT's, however TT seems to have better route planning algorithms, so it's quite hard to say which is definitely better.. I rarely use satnav, anyway - I think the best navigation ever made is brain+paper map. It 'only' requires someone to hold it and direct while you're driving. :)

2. what about surfing the net (via 3G or wifi)? Is the embedded browser fast?
3. curiosity: will it be able to play on-line radios on internet sites? I mean, there are some sites who offer you the possibility to listen to the on-line radio via windows media player. will the tytn II be able to open this kind of streaming?
Thank you for your patience and time and excuse me for my english!

Hi all
Having spent some time using the device, I can confirm that its pretty damn good! I come from an XDA EXEC which was good but bulky and weighty. Even as a phone, it was a little too big.
I ended up using the device as a Terminal Services laptop and occasionly used Tom Tom with a seperate bluetooth GPS. One thing that did annoy me was the battery life, which would need a charge within a day, possibly 2 at the most.
I gave up, went to my Samsung D900 which was ultra slim, light a a great 3MP camera. Cameras are not important to me, but for quick snaps or photos and video, its proved very, very impressive indeed.
I am with Vodafone, and never had 3G enabled on my SIM. When I purchased Tytn II, it was sim-free. At the same time I contacted Vodafone, spoke to a sensible customer service department who sent out a 3G SIM card.
Best part was... its free! So the new TyTN II arrived, and the 3G Sim. Once activated I started to play.
First things that struck me:
1) Accessories in the box. Nice carry case for the phone that attaches to the belt. Great for me
2) Nice presentation to the box - good and clear instruction manual
3) Simple read me to get started as quick as poss
4) Charge time was short :-)
5) Simple Wizard setup. Boot time short.
Upon starting the device and trying to get used to the buttons, I started ACtive Sync. Realising I needed 4.5 I done a clean uninstall of my 4.0 sync and resinstalled 4.5. Sync up with USB very nicely, and quick too.
I then setup the Wifi and sync over wireless. Again, great, simple and worked like a charm.
Next I went back to the big HTC Manual (and it is big!) and started reading slowly all the features and functions. I concentrated on certain areas of the phone (GPS, Sync, Bluetooth and Wi-fi) before exploring all the other WM6 features. I also tried out the "weather" feature which is a nice touch.
Next day, after leaving the phone on, I wanted to check what % the battery was at. Considering the small usage I gave it, I was surprised and impressed it had dropped just 7% !! Comparing that to my XDA Exec it had lost 20% overnight! May not sound much, but for me the battery life is essential, when I am on the move and no access to a charger.
Next, was the camera and video. Not reading the instructions I went head into the application and started to take shots. Compared to my D900 its pretty good. Again, its not going to replace a decent Canon camera, but for video on the go and photos to take and share or email, its very, very impressive!
Installed Tom Tom and downloaded one map. Again, without any configuration changes, the GPS connected and I was able to route an address. Yet again, all simple, no changes needed and no modications using the built in GPS.
Battery life was now down to 78% after playing with videos, camera, music and TomTom, with the odd bluetooth connectivity. And almost forgot, the use of the slideout keyboard and MSN with some web browsing too.
Sync today, with USB and again, no reported problems. In fact, out of the box, I have YET to have a single crash or instance of a failure. The only time it was reset was due to Sprite Backup doing this during and after the backup process. Not too impressed with this, but a small price to pay for the backup of essential OS Data.
Overall I have to stress that this for me, is an absolute essential purchase. Yes its not as light as my D900, but its NOT heavier than my XDA Exec (which I will now be selling), but its enough to be seen as a phone, which offers alot more functionaility than the eye can see on first contact.
And that is one impressive device. I am sure as the years go by, the HTC range will get smaller and slimmer, but for now its a great device. For a business person, its ideal.
Some concerns I have noted are:
1) No Terminal Services Client. I found a download for Mobile Remote Desktop, but unsure if I should have this by default or need a seperate install
2) I noticed my Signal Bar had the letter "G" on it. When I click on this, it told me it was connected to GPRS, 3G for 4 hours!!!!!!!!! I have absolutely no idea what it was doing, let alone why it was connected. That bothers me alot!! Last thing I need is a huge bill! I also discovered if Active Sync is set to "sync when items arrive", the connection remains on. Any ideas how this can be turned off ?
I think thats about it, considering I have been using it for a few days.
Anyhow, just wanted to share my views on this device. I know its expensive, but when you consider what the device holds on its own, and all the features, the value is worth it.
Thanks, Simon

the best camera program out there for windows mobile. it takes MUCH better pictures and videos than the default camera software that comes with your phone. you can take ANY resolution of video. the framerate is way better. i suggest you try the trial. just EVERYTHING about it is better.

Currently I'm in Dallas, Texas, and ordered a TyTN II from http://www.onthegosolutions.com/ on Thursday and it arrived Friday. Folks at On-the-Go seemed pretty friendly, but then my unit was ordered with another for a colleague making it a fairly high order value. Think the final cost was about $1700 for the pair, which is expensive for the US, but about on the money compared with back home.
Interestingly, the unit delivered is a British spec device - GB in the serial and with a GB charger. That actually suits me down to the ground as I'm from Scotland working here on a long term contract.
So far, impressed with the unit - a worthy upgrade from my old iPaq hw6515.

The Carry case is one that you can clip onto your belt. and its pretty stiff as well !
I used the GPS this morning to work, which is a 20 mins drive (and yes I know ; -- I am going) :-)
however, with the GPS on and using this to work, I found after the jourey the battery was down to 87%.
So... using the modaco offer (or if not) I will use the car charger for this feature. Something I just wanted to share. Should also point out the phone was on all night last night and the last charge was 8:30pm yesterday. so again, I think its still good.
And remember, I came from an XDA EXEC (which at the time was the cutting edge PPC device to have). Goes to show how light and slim devices are becoming - the XDA looks sadly dated, but I still cannot complain!

As a HTC Universal (Orange M5000) user i would be very interested to hear from anyone who's converted from using the Universal to the TyTn II. I am very tempted to go for a TyTn II but am concerned about loosing the VGA display as i use my device a lot for internet browsing (Opera) and remotely connecting to PCs.
Let me know your experience.

Haven't forked out for my Tytn II yet (I just bought a new Macbook Pro (Paul that's your fault) and my wife WILL kill me if I spend any more on 'gadgets' this month) but I used to use my Ameo for remote desktop purposes and I could never go back to a non VGA screen if I still had a regular need for a remote desktop connection.
You might want to wait for the HTC Omni (Google it) which is little more than vapourware at the moment but hopefully should materialise early part of 2008.

I got one WOO HOOOOOOOO
and it rocks....not had much time with it yet but I already love it, runs sweet as no matter how many apps open.
Will post more in a day or so once I've had a good play around with it. I got mine here in Dubai so its sim free and seems to have everything just the way HTC intended, 1 issue though.....Tom Tom dont have a map for the Middle East so I can only use that when I'm back in the UK.
Anyone know any free gps mapping software with maps for the middle east?

Well still no answer from EE I left them a message they never call back. It is ok I live close to them but will never spend my money with them due to lack of customer service.. On another note mobileplanet are the funniest company. I order mine Kaiser and it said yesterday morning 8 days to deliver and this morning it stated shipped I call them to check the order to see if it really ship and it did. The funny part it one day they tell something and the other some else. By no means am I complaining but it is just funny... Tomorrow I should have it..

How about Garmin's Mobile 10 albeit you have to use their external Bluetooth GPS unit (GPS Proxy won't work anymore supposedly to fake it with an internal GPS). As I understand it, there are more free Garmin compatible maps of the world than any other software out there. There's software to make or tweak your own maps also.
For instance, I can find free maps of Japan unlike TomTom.

So does Mobile Planet not offer any sort of extended warrenty like 95% of the other sites on the net do? I don't really ever feel comfortable buying a phone w/o at least a 2 year no questions asked warrenty. Although not even one of my past 5 phones has ever needed repair I just like to have that piece of mind. (Also, I have never kept any of my phones for more than 6 months, so that may be part of the reason they haven't ever broken)(I'm really hoping that this phone is spectacular enough to put my obsession to rest for at least a year)

Actually I'm thinking about buying one on an US site for a simple reason : 180 USD less expensive in the States (shipping fees via FedEx included) than on european sites...
I don't know if something's going to change for the warranty (I hope not) but a seller talked about a 2 yeas world wide warranty.
Can someone confirm this?

Hi UnicornKaz
Err... yes - Can confirm it. I have also been able to sync with exchange for WM5 too. (using XDA Exec)
Never had a problem. and that is using wireless connection. If its not working, then how am I getting emails syncing every 15 mins
Can anyone clarify about the "Remote Desktop" being in the Pro version of WM6 - is this meant to be present, or am I meant to be doing a download?
PAUL !!!! Anyone !!
WI-FI activesync ( which is impossible since WM5 ) ... is totally different then wireless syncing to an exchange server !!
the 1st, you are wifi to the desktop activesync ...
""
Microsoft made huge mistake by removing the feature of ActiveSync over Wi-Fi synchronization altogether! Previously, in older versions of Windows Mobile, it was possible to synchronize with your PC over Wi-Fi (and thus also over whole Internet) but out of security reasons Microsoft removed this feature (instead of just disabling this feature by default).""

and the latter ... you are using wifi to an exchange account ( which is the same as web browsing and/signing on to a forum or hotmail ) ...

Well I spoke to HTC about the lack of working maps for the Middle East and boy what a surprise. Rather than the usual vendor "we dont care" attitude, i was told that HTC are sorry about this and that in a week or so they will have an alternative to tom tom and that they will gladly give me some maps and software for free!
three cheers for HTC, i fully expected them to say "tough luck"

Hey, showed up here at ~2pm today courtesy of prompt, accurate, flexible billing E-Gadget Depot with car charger and iPDA ultra clear screen protector (for dopod 810, cht9100, trinity, p3600). Finally set up most of it and transferred my pictures and ringtones from the SE t637. 72 chords really improves my midis.
This is what a call a tight experience. Everything just works, and you can feel the polish and quality.
Man is the screen small compared to the Palm TX. It's a bit heavier, but... the options and stability! Haven't had to reset once between all the bluetoothing, wifi, and usb activesync (unlike the Palm). Installing Tom Tom fixes the Google Maps not seeing GPS problem. Probably Google doesn't initialize something properly. Spb Phone Suite is up so I can filter calls.
Anybody know how to convert sim contacts into "Outlook" contacts? I'll probably find out eventually through the manual and online. Haven't figured out how to convert the weather app to show in F, but C is fine too and I might as well go full metric anyways considering I drive using Km on US streets. Your UK three prong plugs are HUGE compared to the US's.
Got Gmail Java running fine.. will try Opera next. Man, how do you guys deal with such tiny screen estate and all these widgets and softbuttons taking up the estate? HTC Home clock takes up way too much room, wouldn't mind just the tabs interface. Gets moderately warm during activesync and charging.
Skype 2.2 Gold over wifi works fine, although haven't figured out how to get it to use the BT headset for the audio.
Definitely not a transreflective screen, but about the same as my TX so I can deal with it, even in bright sun, I hope.
So the rambling stops, and more tweaking continues. Paul's tweakpak next.

Hi all
Having spent some time using the device, I can confirm that its pretty damn good!

Hi Simon,
Glad you're enjoying your new toy - still yet to order mine.
Connected to GPRS/G for 4 hours is not as problem - you will only pay for what you download unless you have the unlimited dataplan that V do. This might have been opened by either IE or also the weather feature on the homescreen will use this to download the lastest data and neither of these will automatically close the connection - there may be an auto disconnect option after a period of activity under settings that you could try.

Hi
Got mine a couple of days ago. Great device. Really feels better quality than SPV M3100. Very fast. GPS is excellent. Keyboard swivel excellent. Slightly worried about the screen, but as I live in Ireland, there's not that much bright sunlight anyway?
Question: I had 3 (I travel a lot) replacement batteries for my SPV M3100 and none of them will work as HTC have changed the pin position for ths TyTn II. I've ordered a new battery from expansys, BUT ... has anyone seem a TyTn 2 desk cradle/charger with slot for extra battery? (Obviously I can't use my existing M3100 cradle to charge spares as the pins are wrong.
Paul - any info on when this may be coming?

The cradle and extra battery are still on back order so it may be that they are not yet available, but they are/were listed on thier site.

On closer inspection it seems that it must have been placed in the TyTN II accessories by mistake. The one on my order form is listed as being for the original TyTN which if I understand correctly uses a different battery. I will be contacting Clove to make a change to my order before they ship that cradle. I guess I'll have to settle for a standard cradle for now.

I am thinking may when I lose GPRS or Edge or 3G service and re-gain it that the activesyn kicks in?
Anyone else experiencing or noticing this?

I find it a bit sluggish too, nowhere near as fast as my old h2210
Glad I downloaded that program to block the GPRS connections, don't like the way it kicks in without asking you - could end up being v expensive
Now just need M$ to sort out the Mobile Device Center as I think the old active sync was better (more reliable)
Often need to close programs and unplug the cable before starting again otherwise it claims to be syncing for ages
Why can't we sync over WiFi, only BT?

I can't see the kaiser on the US site, maybe the appropriate links will appear when it's on the site
As a TomTom reseller, you can buy full version UK & IE, Western Europe, Australia, or USA & Canada from me. All full version 6.75 (latest) and street level detail with Navigator 6 software (included as free with the maps). I may be able to cut you a deal as a fellow Kaiser fanatic!
Before you ask, I don't cover anything else! If you need something weird like Hong Kong or South Africa, you'll have to pay the full price from TomTom.

By the way, when I finally get hold of the Kaiser on the 18th, I'll test all the TomTom maps in it and review the performance here if you think it's helpful.

Chris
By the way, when I finally get hold of the Kaiser on the 18th, I'll test all the TomTom maps in it and review the performance here if you think it's helpful.
What can you do UK&IE for?

Do someone know if there are main differences between the US and the European versions of the device?
Just curiosity (I'd like to purchaise mine on a US site but I'm in France...).
Thank you!

If I were you go with the EU vision I have it and it is great.. The US one will need to buy from a carrier like AT&T and it will not have the same feature so I have been told. Must of the time carriers take out feature and place there branding on the phone which mean it is crap.. Just to give you example I have the HTC Star Tek thats what was call when it was fist release now it is call Clamshell Smartphone ( I just went to the HTC and they are calling it that) the same phone but at&t one which is the 3125 and it was full of software crap.. AT&T for what I hear may take out one of the cam it comes with two cam the EU one. I say it is worth the money to get the EU one..

Actually I think it is an unbranded unlocked phone and the price, even including shipping via fedex, remains interesting.
630€ instead of 750 in europe (and including memory card, car charger and screen protection).

As far as I know there is no "US" version for sale here yet. The US websites selling the unlocked TyTN II are selling the UK model. I got mine from Elite-Electronix (in Florida) for USD $799.95. It was scheduled for delivery on 9/13 but I got it a day early on the 12th and it's wonderful! They shipped a UK to US A/C plug adapter with it (free of course). I know others have had some bad customer service but my experience with them has been great (so far).

Is that the only CD that came with yours? I'm not at home but I am pretty sure mine came with two CD's which look almost identical except one has a little tomtom logo on it.
Also how long has it been since you receieved it? The vendor may say you've left it too long to report the issue?? Give them a call and see what they say, the fact that the seal was broken is a little worrying.

I received my TyTnII yesterday from Handtec having oredered it on Monday and the seal on the box was also slit and although there were two CDs in the box, neither included TomTom, in particular the additional applications CD with Sprite, etc did not do so. I notice Handtec has just reduced the price by £25 since I bought it - now £440 with free delivery. I will also ring Handtec tomorrow to ask what happened to the TomTom software - as they say on the website for the phone currently:
"GPS
- Internal GPS antenna
- Standalone GPS and A-GPS mode
- TomTom Navigator 6 Taster Edition"
If it is hidden somewhere, please let me know.
That apart, so far I have been very happy with the TyTnII, having moved from a T-Mobile MDA Pro. I do miss the screen resolution of the MDA Pro but applications such as e-mail have worked very well and much faster than before. TomTom apart I have no real gripes - the screen resolution can hopefully be cured in future with an upgrade.

The TyTN II is the Kaiser, no? And soon to be the Tilt?
I'm just trying to wrap my head around these forums - if I were to look for news about this device, or post a question about this device, would I do that under:
"Newsroom -> Pocket PC (Professional) News"
or
"Pocket PC/Windows Mobile Professional (Touchscreen) -> Pocket PC Device Specific -> HTC Kaiser - Kaiser.MoDaCo.com"
or...?

Not sure if this will do what you want, but you can set your active sync to manual this way:
Open Active Sync,
Choose Menu and Schedule,
Set Peak Times and Off-peak times to manual.
Alternatively you can adjust your peak times so active sync is only on at the times that you want it on.
Perhaps this is not what you're looking for, but it is a nice way to keep your phone from alerting you to new emails before you get up in the morning if you charge it on the night stand like I do.

You can get the TomTom full version UK & IRE + Navigator 6 (inc with map) for just £49. The "taster" version is a bit rubbish.
In fact the full Western Europe street level map is on sale for £59.99 currently. Don't think that will last though, Christmas is coming up!

It seems to put the documents in a really strange format I have never seen before (.docx) and when I try to look at it through active sync it doesnt even seem to be a word file at all. When I double click it all it does is bring up the properties. I really need this feature to work for me, so any help is more than appreciated.

I've now gotten the file on to my computer, but when I try to open it with MSWord it tells me that it is encoded and tells me to select the encoding that will make the document readable. I've went through alot of them, but it still comes out in code (aka completely worthless jibberish) I really need some help on this one. Thanks
I finally figured it out after a little over an hour of tinkering. Sadly the solution was to put it into rich text format...which, once I figured it out, took all of 3 seconds. I guess thats what you do for the first few days with a new device though.
Posted by: ipgenie Sep 20 2007, 22:48
.docx is Microsofts new Office 2007 word format. Junk in my opinion and a real pain because it's not backwards compatible with older versions of office. If you had office 2007 or the reader on your computer you could open it right up.
To change the default format on your TyTN Mobile Office, open Word Mobile, Choose Menu, tools, options and change the default template to "Word 97-2003 Document (.doc)". All new documents will open with your older version of Microsoft Office.

we've been hearing dates of it being released, and it hasnt happened, so what makes it being delayed just as true? anything we hear is gonna change, whether it be the Tilt being released or delayed, it's all the same, its just about waiting.
basicly im trying to say, it doesnt matter what they tell us, it will come out in 3 days, or be delayed for 3 weeks, either one isnt even true, so we just need to wait.

Not sure if you fihured this out yet or not-The problem is known and is purposely set that way (thanks to Microsoft). It was really driving me nuts! I finally found the solution on the web and did the following and it works!
ActiveSync keeps restarting on PPC. >>> FIXED <<< I had a Cingular 8125 with NBD TouchFLO roms, but I ended up selling it so I could purchase a HTC Touch.
I posted this question in the ELF thread but nobody had an answer.
I thought I would post it here since the touch is a Pocket PC with WM6 installed and the Wizard thread is very active.
So, the problem I'm having is:
When I start up the HTC Touch, ActiveSync is running. I stop it, but sooner or later it will show up in the Tasks running again. I'll leave the HTC Touch alone for awhile, come back and ActiveSync is running again.
I did the ActiveSync Fake server Trick(Fake IP, Set schedules to Manual, etc..), but that didn't help.
I only had the HTC Touch for a couple of days. I haven't installed any programs. I even did a Hard Reset, but ActiveSync still runs.
Here is the Fix:In the windows/activesync directory there is a file called “CtrlLog” file, in the file I noticed that at certain times it would say “KeepAwake” so I knew there had to be something trying to keep ActiveSync running.
I download an app called “Task Manager by FdcSoft”, cool little app for Free, it showed me all the processes running in the background. The one that caught my eye is a process called “repllog.exe”, because it had an ActiveSync icon next to it.
So just messing around with “Task Manager” I went to “Notifications” and noticed there were three “repllog.exe” in the notifications list towards the bottom. After disabling and enabling “repllog.exe” one by one, I believe the one that is causing ActiveSync to keep restarting itself is the “repllog.exe” that has an Argument named AppRunAfterTimeChange(must scroll to the right to see it). So I disabled that particular “repllog.exe” and did a Soft Reset.
I no longer see ActiveSync in the Task Manager list unless I connect to the PC using a USB cable.
NOTE: This procedure might not work for everyone. I have a HTC Touch with WM6.
Get Task Manager here: http://ppcfree.com/en/index.php?soft=1612

Hello Paul,
Does opening the "external GPS program" alone will screw up the internal GPS? is a hard reset really the only way to fix this? I'm having problem with google maps nor VisualGPSce working correctly; I did run the Programs > GPS Program once before, thinking that was the right one to use (immediately after opening the box) - would it help to uninstall the external GPS program instead? why hard reset? I just don't want to loose all my settings again.

Hi Joachim.
No, merely opening the external GPS settings should not screw you up....
If you have already modified the settings in the external GPSsettings panel then the consensus seems to be a hard reset is the only way to recover GPS function.
If you are simply having trouble using GPS follow this formula.
Download and install GpsViewer.exe from here:
http://pocketmap.com/accessories/GpsViewer.exe
Open GpsViewer.
select Com Port 'COM4:'
select Baudrate '4800' - should be preselected
select Open GPS
select any of the start buttons.
wait 15-20 seconds and select the GPS status tab at the bottom.
It will help if you are outdoors and not on the bottom floor of a 12 story building.
While the GpsViewer is still running and after you have a good fix - some blue boxes in the status tab - open GoogleMaps and try to use the track location function.
Google maps will often time out before the GPS in the Kaiser can get a good fix.
Good luck.

Thank you, Karlo,
I really wanted to avoid a hard reset and managed it finally by, actually, changing settings in "external GPS": there are 3 tabs inside the External GPS Control panel; the first one is "programs", the 2nd "Hardware", the 3rd is "Access"; I changed the 2nd tab from a specified GPS hardware port to (None); I changed the 3rd to "Manage GPS automatically" and changed the 1st one from "(None)" for a GPS program port to COM4. That did it.
Now, with GPSViewer.exe, VisualGPSce.exe and GoogleMaps I have no problem anylonger as long as I set their settings to that COM4 port. All is well. I didn't touch the "external GPS" control panel, afraid of screwing up the settings and having to go via a hard reset but in the end it was those settings that helped me fix it.
Thanks everybody

Good luck.

Someone who knows how to make the screen stay light up while making a call (in closed mode). In my experience the light goes automatically off after just some seconds, and I would like the screen to be light under the whole talk, so that I can use it without having to press the button so often to lighten it up again.

It's a bit random, sometimes things break sometimes they don't, there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason!

I have now tried to search all the built in possibilities of the phone, but have not found a way to make the light on all the time while making a call. Are there some 3rd party program that enables this mode of functioning?

Even if possible, you would be a) using a lot of battery and
I wouldnt want the screen on next to my face all the time...
Just flick the D pad down to turn the light on when needed.

Sometimes I need to see the screen all the time for example to select a number (1-9) during a call or for other purposes. So it would have been a clear advantage not to need to push the D pad so many times.
Is there a 3rd party program to set the light constant on?

Have you tried increasing the time the backlight stays on anyway?

Yes, I tried to uncheck the backlight time box, also. But that part of the menu does not seem to have any impact on the light constant or long time on while making a call. I need to see for instance to see the numbers on the screen when I call my answering machine, which requires some tapping of some numbers to navigate in the menu.

Thanks so much for the link. I managed to solve the problem, but I needed some suppport from the technician in the shop to change the registry file.
But I now really now am satisfied with having the screen light on while making a call.

I got my TyTN II on an Orange contract yesterday, I know .. late for the party. But this is also my first post here. I love it, I got an unlimited data plan (made sur eof that) and after getting it home, I am still in awe at it. My main grenade in the war on iPhone, currently setting up a slingbox and what not for this bad boy. And there is something so compforting in pressing 1 button for weather forcast, I wont use, I dont need it, but its nice to know I can
TyTN II > iPhone!
Loaded so far:
Palringo
Yahoo Go 2.0
HTC Home Plugin (because of the Orange branding)
Skype
Vspainter LE
If you know any other good little bits, let me know
