Android tablet shipments overtake iOS for the first time

Android tablet shipments have overtaken iOS for the first time in Q1 2013 according to figures just released by IDC.

Android's market share rose to 56.5% (27.8m devices), topping iOS' 39.6% share (19.5m devices). Windows tablets are in a very distant 3rd place with 3.3%. Windows RT fares even worse with only a 0.4% share. Ouch.

Tablet shipment numbers grew 142.4% year on year in Q1 2013, totalling 49.2 million devices, more than the entire first half of 2012.

Although beaten into second place, Apple continues to be the largest single tablet vendor by a considerable margin - shipping almost twice as many units as their closest rival, which is, of course, Samsung!

ASUS is the 3rd most popular tablet vendor just ahead of Amazon, no doubt boosted by the Nexus 7. The FonePad, refreshed PadFone and potential forthcoming Nexus refresh should serve to cement that position.

Onwards and upwards! There's no excuse for Android apps not being tablet friendly now is there... *cough* Twitter *cough* Facebook *cough*

Hardly surprising when you consider that the cheapest iPad Mini is £269 and for iPad 2, it's £329. Apple is no longer the gold standard of personal tech.
