Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) Is Hitting The SGSII!

While some of us were catching a nap, Samsung announced that Android 4.0 (ICS) is now trickling out to Galaxy S II users. Initially the release is targetting devices in Poland, Hungary, Sweden and South Korea, with other countries following soon. After all the flip-flopping on the issue during the last week, this announcement seems to be the real deal.

Samsung's announcement was made on their Facebook page, but he exciting news doesn't stop there: the Korean company also announced the release of an Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) update for the Galaxy S, the Galaxy Tab 7", Galaxy S Plus, Galaxy S SCL and Galaxy W. This update will start hitting handsets at the end of March and feature some of the Ice Cream Sandwich goodness such as Face Unlock, Snapshot and Photo Editor.

Samsung also covered their back by stating that the  "software update and specific models upgradeable to Android 4.0 will vary by market and wireless carriers' requirements".

Let us know how you get on with the update and your first impressions in the comments section. Our dedicated Samsung Galaxy S II forum is a good place to take a peek at too!

As an ICS user with the Galaxy Nexus, new users well notice favourite apps disappearing. In the UK, SkyGo, for instance, will disappear along with other besties as they're not compatible with ICS.
You make it sound worse than it actually is. Very few apps aren't compatible with ICS and out of all the apps I use there hasn't been any that didn't work.
Anyone know when it will be available to UK?

Cheers.

Try again... :)

According to Pocket-Lint.com...

In a further statement to Pocket-lint Samsung confirmed the ICS update would be coming to the UK week commencing the 19 March:

"Samsung UK can confirm that the roll out of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) on Galaxy S II will be available from week commencing 19th March, however the availability of software upgrades in the UK will be dependent upon each network’s own software approvals process."
Thanks. :)
Blimey taken them this long to put gingerbread on the Galaxy 7", still at least they are doing it I guess.
@Pondlife: I think it's an update to Gingerbread. I think it already ran Gingerbread, and this is the enhancement pack for those sour over not getting ICS, like the original Galaxy S.

Gah, when I post an article the announcements squashed not three hours later and I look like a fool. ;)

Haha, Good to see it finally out though. I'll have to take a look on ma Dad's GSII
ah fair enough. Can't see that I'd be placated with update to gb rather than ics goodness.
Doesn't inspire me to buy Samsung in future tbh
Hmmmm. As a galaxy nexus user, ICS is fine and good. Like my NexusS
Anyone see a pre-rooted CWM flashable version of this appearing anywhere yet?
