Bargain Watch: Misco offering Dual-Core 9.7" Gemini Devices tablet for £80

Here at MoDaCo we certainly do love a good bargain and this is certainly worth looking at if you have been thinking about purchasing an Android tablet.

Misco.co.uk are offering the Gemini JoyTab 9.7 Pro as 'Open Box' specials, priced at a bargain £80.47 including delivery. The tablets are customer returns but have been checked and repaired when needed.

Users over at HotUKDeals have been getting very excited about this deal as the devices are coming with the additional bluetooth keyboard case as well as the OTG cable so you can connect additional USB devices to the tablet including 3G dongles.

The device has a nice 1024x768 screen with 1GB RAM, 16GB storage and a decent 1.6GHz Dual-Core Rockchip RK3066 processor. The device also has Quad-Core graphics in the form of a MALI GPU so you should get great performance from games.

Misco are offering a 30-day guarantee on the device but users are welcome to use the community support forum provided by Gemini at https://getsatisfact.../geminidevices/ as well as the forum here at MoDaCo.

Cashback on Misco purchases is also available from TopCashback.

Let us know if you have bought one of these devices!

Update: Well that didn't last long! Stock has run out for now but we will let you know if Misco offer any more for sale!

[Note: Gemini Devices are one of MoDaCo's platinum sponsors.]

So how to they get away with not offering the mandatory 1 year warranty (Or 2 if you know enough about the EU regs to get it - I don't bother) if they are a UK company ?

Is the rom and keyboard properly localised ? (i.e UK layout without needing external keyboard helper pro).

Is there something other than them being a platinum sponsor that makes this particularly good.

afaik there are no docs or sources from rockchip.

(Worse than Allwinner / much worse than the big names - Qualcomm / Nvidia / TI)

I am more interested in something to run standard Linux (With Wayland).

Don't think Rockchip are very friendly to anything.

If modaco has a good source drop then maybe it is different.

(There again even if something is commited the Andypad situation could happen again).

That's up to Misco. Oh and the EU regulation doesn't apply in the UK as the Sale of Goods Act overrides it. You still have your statutory rights.

Yes, it's a proper UK localised ROM with a UK keyboard.

Is there something other than them being a platinum sponsor that makes this particularly good.

It's a decent spec and it's a low price. What more do you want? ;)

Plenty of GPL source code out there for the RK3066 processor. And documents are out there too. Spend a few minutes with Google ;)

I am more interested in something to run standard Linux (With Wayland).

Then you don't want an Android tablet lol

Don't think Rockchip are very friendly to anything.

What makes you say that?

If modaco has a good source drop then maybe it is different.

We don't have anything different from what is already out there in the wild

(There again even if something is commited the Andypad situation could happen again).

I doubt very much that Gemini Devices will disappear like Andypad did and leave its customers fending for themselves with no support.

The very reason the deal is posted - £80 for a tablet of this spec with a Bluetooth keyboard is cracking!

A linux distribution, "Picuntu" which is based on Ubuntu, has been created for the RK3066 Android TV sticks. In fact, the Picuntu web site (http://ubuntu.g8.net/) is actually running on one of these TV sticks!

I don't know if anybody has worked with this to install on a RK3066 tablet yet, but I'm sure it will be possible in due course.

Edit: Apparently, a version of 'Picuntu' has been made for the Pipo S1 (a small, cheap RK3066 tablet) so it would certainly possible to install linux on this Misco Tablet. Quite how much knowledge and programming ability you'd need to achieve this, I don't know. Above my pay grade, however!

It will be interesting to see if Ubuntu Touch is eventually ported across to these devices in the future.

Not such a very different deal from the reconditioned kindle fires that were on sale a while back at £89 (though they didn't come with a free bt keyboard, granted).
