Panasonic Mobile may withdraw from Europe within six months

Panasonic stopped sales of mobile phones here in 2005, then returned to Europe in April 2012 with a plan to sell 1.5 million smartphones this business year. That target is unlikely to be reached, according to sources.

We covered the return of Panasonic to Europe in December 2011 in this post.

So where has it all gone wrong?

They released beautifully designed handsets with poor batteries and running Android 2.3 with a promised update to 4.0.4.

Kazuhiro Tsuga, Panasonic's new boss, has pledged to revive the flailing company by removing money-losing or barely profitable parts of the corporation. Panasonic Mobile's European arm is one of the parts that may face the axe.

Panasonic have goodwill credited 70 billion yen (541 million pounds) on its mobile phone business, after the 2010 purchase of shares in Panasonic Electric Works it did not already own. Writing off the European part or all of Panasonic Mobile would add to the 41 billion yen of restructuring costs already planned for this business year.

Some good news for Eluga owners... the 4.0.4 update has been released for the Eluga dl1 on the 30th October 2012.

Panasonic is distributing a free update for Panasonic's Android smartphone ELUGA. The update will be available from the 30th October and delivered through the Google Play Store. The update tool "ELUGA ICS update" can be found in Google Play store and secures the simple step-by-step installation process for Ice Cream Sandwich update. Panasonic recommends using a stable wireless connection to the data packet of about 150MB to download. Detailed information about the update process and the innovation will be published on http://smartphones.panasonic.eu/

The Eluga ICS Update app is now live on the Google Play Store.

Can't say that making this announcement will get them many sales. Who's going to buy a Panasonic handset now, when they know that in all likelihood support, updates, etc will disappear in 6 months time?
